I agree. They can't afford for it not to happen.

Never seen you use the word fact before, and so emphatic too.
And its the exact type posting from itks that creates a shitstorm on here .
We all know trade period is volatile with information/rumours changing from day to day leading up to and during trade period .

Or that's what we keep getting told when itks post rumours as fact .
Even if Martin finds his way through to us in the PSD in no way is it fact right now imo .

I dont understand why this needs to be repeated.

Every media, interview and fall out was.

Tom Papley was never going to be traded unless Joe Danniher went to Sydney.

It’s fun to go over, how some people continue to say, Papley wasn’t available, yet your statement and the Swans said many times, he’s available if we get Joe.

So he was available, if he wasn’t SOS wouldn’t have spent 10 days trying to reach a deal.

Thanks champ

I'm fine, just calling things how they are, so fans can move forward with a fairer assessment of what just went down

*Calling things as you see them.

We brought in an experienced, quality player in an area of need, still look like bringing in an experienced, quality player between the arcs, and have a solid draft hand.

Next year will be interesting.

The OOC and FA available this year sucked. Let's be honest, it wasn't a great year to be chasing senior talent, was some but a lot of mediocre players floating about. We went after the big talent and didn't get it (yet). Those who went after the mediocre talent got them. I'm ok with that.

Next year we'll be loaded right up and there is a lot more going on so hopefully we have things go better then.

- Potential and likelihood of a clean out at Carlton. Older players and younger ones who are not up to it.

- Grundy, Cameron, Whitfield, Viney, Robbie Gray all RFA. We'll be sniffing about no doubt.

Seems to be a lot of players OOC in the league. Not sure how many good ones there will be but we will see.

Should definitely be a lot of ones who looked to move this period who will be still looking to move. Players once they decide to go generally go. We'll be back for Papley and Swans will get their man for nothing. Whether we have the picks to offer for Papley is another thing as we will likely have other targets. Seems to have signed a really stupid contract, might have seemed like a good and secure one at the time but now it's not a good one for him so it will be hard to get him.

Getting Jack Martin in the PSD will be the biggest middle finger for GCS
I don't think they care tbh, they were trying to send a message and they did. They didn't need the draft pick after the concessions from the AFL, to flagging to the rest of the comp that they won't be held to ransom was more important for them.

Losing the player for nothing is dumb, but if ever there's a time where a club can do it without hurting itself too much it is when they have 3 first round picks, including 1 & 2.

Is it true that Sydney actually offered up Papley to Essendon on the last day of trade?

Edit: oops my bad, I read the article wrong.

Im used to it but saying Essendon should have done it for Daniher is dumb (that's what your other post was saying).

Good on them for backing themselves to get him to resign next year - I hope more clubs take a harder stand on players signing and then wanting out when contracted because a big contract is offered elsewhere (or their pet goldfish's family is from that state/town)
Fair enough we have a differing opinion all good I see the landscape where contracts will mean less and less over the next decade and more where player movement IMO will only increase as player wages increase .

For anyone who wants to pot the club over not landing Papley, have a read of the comments from his manager here:

You beat me to it.

I think this is just as telling. Addressing those who say Carlton will not attract players to nominate them in the future.

Rous said the Blues had followed through on their commitment to getting a deal done. "I couldn't fault Carlton, they were transparent when the process started on the lengths they would go to in order to get a trade done for Tom and understood the challenges given the high value that Sydney placed on him," he said. "They couldn't have done any more."

SOS should have been the one setting the agenda instead of cowtailing to other clubs ******* about.

Should have came out and said if Essendon/Sydney didn't have a deal ready by midday #9 was off the table and he was moving on to other possibilities.

How do you set the agenda with a contracted player?

Im hoping eventually clubs have control over players for the first 4 or 5 years before players become free agents, just like most other sports in USA. If clubs want to trade them, ship them off. Time for players to stop being babies and do your 4 or 5 years penance before getting the big $$$$

The old 'players wont agree to it' argument.....well stiff shit. Introduce it from a certain year (those already playing can be on the old rules, within 10 years most will be under the new rules), any player drafted from that year onwards agrees to the terms. Don't like it, don't sign on to be an AFL player.

Not at all worried about missing out on a small forward from a list perspective. Papley would have made us better but put it into perspective, he’s not Leigh Matthews.. Plenty of options like Cuners, or DFAs etc. Could even get Eddie to show Newman a few tricks over the summer and move him forward to free up the spot for Doc. No need to stress, next year will be very exciting for us all.

Imagine GCS redrafting Martin on $1M in the PSD.

He'd be their highest paid player, for a single year, and doesn't even want to be there.

GCS would face a mass exodus of players wanting the same dollars (which they can't afford) or leaving in principle (because GCS will pay more to spite a player rather than reward players who want to be there).

Some "message" they'll send.

Bring it on.

This whole statement doesn't make sense, this is such a gaslighting statement.

I never claimed or most of the bigfooty posted will claim Papley wasn't available, everyone knew he was available when he nominated to be traded to us.

The point of discussion was that Papley wasn't going to us if the Joe Danniher trade didn't go through.

Haha....I have zero doubt in my mind Barras is given information from someone in the club/recruitment area to provide the real news when it’s decided it’s needed.

Have a read of his posts over the trade period, weren’t many of them but they were spot on.

If he says it’s fact we’ll get Martin in the PSD then you can take it to the bank, that’s as unequivocal as it comes.
