You‘re mistaken. The reason why the date isn’t specified in that correspondence is because it’s not a mandatory fixture . But, if you read the AFL rules for 2019 there may be a PSD if a club/s chooses to participate; and, as zeggie has rightfully pointed out, the AFL activates it’s discretion accordingly.
What's the bet that the AFL will decline to have a PSD this year if Martin nominates for it!

If we get Jack Martin in the PSD, then the trade period is a win for Carlton if in the live trading, we swap Pick 9 for another team's 1st Round Pick in 2020.

Then in 2020, we use our two 1st Round Picks in 2020 and our future 1st Round 2021 Pick to trade for an absolute midfield A grade gun like Josh Kelly.

Agreed.

Getting Martin for free and saving our future 2nd & 3rd would end up being a terrific outcome, despite it feeling crap right now that we didn't get him in a trade.
Not getting Papley sucks, but that was out of our control.

Ideally we'd do the trade you propose and have 3 first round picks to offer up in next year's trade period.

Whether it be a huge deal for a Kelly type, or trade 1 for Papley and another for Wines etc. This could be a blessing in disguise, or at least work out OK.

This outcome makes the Betts trade really important as he'll fill the role for a year, and who knows, may allow the likes of Cuningham, Martin, JSOS, Kennedy etc more of a chance to continue to develop and shine in a forward role.

Haven't taken very much notice of the kids this year as I just assumed we wouldn't have a pick early on in this years draft.

Lol. Same here. I'll have to play catch up now.

I think this is going to be one of those things where we won't know if we have the last laugh until the 2021 season.

2021 IMO has always been the point of return for us. Could have been 2020 if everything went perfectly but still unsure on that one.

Draft a gun with pick 9 who becomes your typical small forward who is ready to go early.

Pick Martin up for nothing in the PSD.

Get a year or two of solid football from Betts.

When Daniher walks to Sydney we push Papley and get him for our 2021 campaign.

2021 all players recruited during the rebuild are in their prime age and the few older ones are giving it one last go at it...

May not work out that way but there is a bloody good chance it does.

As disappointing as the trade period was it's not worth getting too upset about just yet.

I'm not sold on Kelly being the absolute superstar people say he is. I'm yet to see him do it in a big game or stand up in the big moment.

I did rate him that way 12-24 months ago, but not anymore. I haven't seen him so it when it matters.

Agree on that, i think the hype was always over the top.

I want to see a player play at an elite level for a prolonged period before hailing him as a superstar and worth $1 million and more than 2 x 1st round picks, not just potential or doing it for 6 rounds.

Another one that comes to mind for me is De Goey, though he has more star factor than Kelly. While he's had some huge games and looks like he could potentially be a superstar, i think the reports of clubs offering over $1 million for him was outrageous...not worth that kind of coin on a long contract just yet.

Why is Hill even being discussed.

He chose the Saints and is now at the Saints.

/the end

Saint have overpaid hardcore, in both the trade value and the contract $$$ offered. Glad we let him go.

Fair opinion... but....

Prelim vs Richmond - Kept Geelong in the hunt.
Round 8 vs Kangeroo - Gave them a huge beat down.

Pretty confident he is going to turn it up another level.

There's been a lot of speculumation, and it seems SOS's name may been smeared by not landing Papley. But under closer examination, the truth is some teams don't want to swab their players. There's no need to stirrup trouble, trades are constantly evulvaing.

I’m nowhere near as disappointed as some on here.

We hold our pick 9 in tact, as well as all 3 of next years picks as well, while there’s a extremely good chance we pick up Martin for free at PSD. Add Eddie and a younger back up ruckman than Phillips was and our trade period actually looks quite decent.

Next year we will have all of our original picks plus future picks as currency to get whichever big names we need to top up for a shot at the flag in a few years time.

You could argue that it's a not such a bad thing to give our current group of players a chance to shine with a full season under Teague to really assess where they fit - a possible silver lining in all this. Over pre-season it's possible Teague changes the roles of some players.

Eg
Some think a gun big bodied mid is a high need - Maybe in 12 months the likes of Setterfield/Kennedy/Stocker & even JSOS step up to fill that role and all of a sudden we don't really need one anymore.

Small/medium forward - Likely we'll still need one, but it's an opportunity for Cunners/Kennedy/JSOS/Lang/Martin etc to develop their forward craft further and have more prominent roles. Maybe a SPS or Fisher ends up getting more game time down there and do well.

Ruck - Maybe we get a look at Pittonet in 2020 and he does really well, giving us confidence that we can stick with him and don't need to bring in a new no.1 ruck to replace Kreuz.

Can this work, if Martin nominates the national draft and puts a price tag of 4 million dollars on his head for two years. No club picks him up, is he able to be then picked without going to the Pre-season draft?

can you just point out the posters describing him as a superstar for me please?

Might need to have a read of the regs - I'm not sure if a player can stipulate a salary for the ND. PSD, yes, ND, not sure.

Update: Yes.

A Player, (other than a first year draft choice Player or such a Player in his second year), may specify in the nomination lodged pursuant to Rule 6.2(c) the Football Payments which he will require if he is selected at a Draft Selection Meeting.

Same deal as the PSD, but it's a fixed two year contract.

However it does open it up to every other club with a pick prior to the selection we want to take him with. Easier to go the PSD, which we wouldn't otherwise use, and where he only needs to get past GC and Melbourne. I don't think Melbourne would take him, odds are we'll have a discussion with them, as will Martin's manager, and a handshake agreement will be reached where (if necessary) we agree we owe them a discreet favour down the line.

I am still getting a handle of how things work. Some players are off contract and can leave as FA’s. Other players are uncontracted and have to be traded for.

AFL contracts really are confusing.

The AFL can simplify this with one sentence. If you are OOC, you are a Free Agent and no compensation is due to any club. This having to qualify for FA is ridiculous. The only compensation due to a club is when trading a contracted player in terms of draft picks.

Right let's look into the crystal ball.

In 10 months Papley still wants to come home to Melbourne.

Are we still his preference or does he look elsewhere?

Why wouldn't we still be his preference? He absolutely knew his move was dependant on the Swans getting Daniher. He rolled the dice on asking for a transfer and lost this time around. When Daniher gets there as a FA next year, we can likely secure Papley as planned. Or not. Who knows?

Sin, I haven't followed the draft this year, who do you recommend?
Hey RoyalParade I've listed the names I'm keen on in that pick 9 thread. Young, Ash, Stephens then probably Flanders. Really not expecting Young to be around though. Anderson has been my clear number one all year, great player. A bit later I like Elijah Taylor, I think he's a better prospect than Weightman.

Happy to answer any other questions.

I dunno...

Logically, it makes it easier for clubs to replace players who choose to leave, so it's swings and roundabouts in that sense.

Realistically, it's just gonna see more good players moving to higher placed clubs.

The one I responded to for a start.

Also, didn't say posters I said people. Every game he plays the commentators fall over themselves to talk about what a star he is every time he touches the ball.
so he's no good?

12 months for other clubs to make their pitches knowing he's on the market. Things could change.

I'm sure we'll still be interested next year, and hopefully front of the queue, but we'll also use the interval to sound out other players as well.
