Papley wasn’t about coin and he wasn’t our A1 recruit.

Cogs was and that also wasn’t about coin.

Ellis’s managers nose is out of joint, he had Ellis to us, got greedy then lost out.

Remember Ellis wanted to join us, his manager said let’s go for more. If Ellis said that his manager should have advised against it.

Very silly the way he went public, perhaps players may be wary of the way he goes about it.

Bultler, who the fu** is butler, does he sell deck chairs?

If our club values and offers one of their players more cash then the manager will be pushing them our way.

It’s all about the % to them.
Papley was the clubs A1 trade target and as the previous poster noted - was our primary small forward target which was supposedly reason enough to leave Butler/McDonald feeling burnt by our clubs approach to dealing with them.
We haven't actually heard the clubs version of events regarding Ellis - just a bunch of people constructing their own stories largely around their viewpoint that Ellis isn't good enough similar to your "Bultler, who the fu** is butler, does he sell deck chairs?" nonsense.
Given we had the biggest offers on the table for both Cogs & Shiel, it's evidently not purely based on $$ and other factors play a part.

I am not sure either of these is correct.

There is nothing wrong with meeting with players and managers but ultimately deciding against bringing them into the club.

I highly doubt not taking either will have any impact on the thinking of players and managers when viewing Carlton as a prospective home post 2020.

Agree - in 2006 Akermanis said he'd be happy to go to any club except Carlton given our 2-3 wooden spoons.

12 months later we recruited Chris Judd.

Just watching that highlight reel he doesn't have a long kick, does he? Looks like his max distance is about 45m at this point.

The way he plays reminds me of a mix of Jack Martin and SPS. Not just because they're both ours (or soon to be...) but that he doesn't have elite top end speed but is quicker and nimbler in a short space. Also the way he dink kicks 20 metres. He looks to be a good mark for his size which is very Jack Martin esque.

This year would be fine, and I will happily take one next year too.

For those accepting that Freo will definitely match, I am not so sure. Jackson and midfield regeneration may be more to their focus. Jackson, Robertson and
Rivers would be high in their ratings. Can't take them all, and they have a reasonable stock of small forward types. I am sure they would rather have the luxury of playing Walters forward than doing the grunt work inside.

Been a fair bit reported here in regard to mixed messages on recruiting. Dan Butler thought he would be at Carlton next year and his management were more than a little bemused at Carlton's approach to the matter.

Didn't SOS do a better deal getting Newness for nothing when small forward is covered by Betts?

Totally agree. This smells of CEO wanting to recruit Richmond players and translating his success at selling Richmond gym memberships to all aspects of a football club.
