Imagine all those 1pointers the old boy clubs could pick up now! If I was a coach I’d be on the phone today sounding out a few. Besides who says it’s for one season? You get them in and get them hooked, have success, breed a good culture and they’ll stay.

There won’t be as much money out there next year and with the virus still around, what’s the guarantee these paid leagues will go ahead? They’ll have the same hurdles in 2021, so why not stick with the league and club who played now?
Despite our playing stocks being pillaged for years by EFL clubs, personally the idea of bulk transfers does not sit all that well with me. Perhaps some past players but would not like to see open slather. (Ex De La players ran 1 and 2 in the EFL MVP medal last year – will happily take them back!)

Maybe AFL Vic need to set a criteria to avoid mass movements in and then mass movements out pre 2021. Maybe max 3 per club, or be a past player, commit for 2021 etc etc. Not sure how contracts work but would they prevent transfers in these circumstances?

All very presumptuous as I think the demise of 2 big metro leagues is not a good sign for those like me who are still hoping for footy in 2020.

No difference at all. However restaurants and cafes are opening again to enable people to run a business and earn income. No one in the VAFA except for umpires and coaches is supposed to derive an income from the matches. VAFA football is not anyone’s livelihood. Restaurants and cafes provide income for tens of thousands people who would otherwise be on JobKeeper.

No one is currently on JobKeeper as a result of not being able to play footy on the weekend are they?

No, but in that analogy, the players are the customers not the employees.

I see what you're getting at that there's a higher tolerance for risk to sustain an industry that employees a lot of people. But if stagnant case numbers sees a June 22 further relaxation, I don't get the pessimism, WA has moved to allow full contact training, we're still 8ish weeks away from the latest start date? 8 weeks ago we were just past the peak, a lot can change.

I'm coming at this from the perspective that some season, so long as it can be afforded by the clubs, has a significant social and community benefit that shouldn't have the pin pulled on it too early. It has to be given every chance.

Thanks Donald

He has a fair point.

Andrews hasn't been shy about letting us all know what the restrictions are and how we must follow them.
Yet has kept his head down about a known protest of thousands that could certainly cause an outbreak.

I'd be pretty flat if VIC was sent back to stage 4 because of something that could have been easily avoided.

Not sure Andrews has banned sports? The efl and nfl have just pulled the trigger early - wrongly imho. When you play vets and are north of forty a missed season is bad bad news!

He has, the restrictions don’t allow community sport to occur at the moment. The hope and expectation is that will change, NSW have already announced when that can occur. I know some leagues were hopeful of getting an idea by the end of this week.

I wouldn’t necessarily expect clubs to go chasing large numbers, unless they require these. But topping up a couple of top players who they may have been working on but couldn’t get away from paid leagues is surely a strong possibility

The fact the VAFA doesn’t rely on gate fees is a big advantage and surely with takeaway food always being ok, there is no reason to not allow canteens to operate.

Any word from the VAFA on clearances/transfer timelines? Have they been extended? or any criteria/restrictions on players entering from other leagues who are not playing?

For those that can’t get through the paywall here is the Leader article in its entirely. While I accept we are in unprecedented times and don’t support ‘open slather, I do see the irony in competitions that have pillaged the ammos for years on the lure of big bucks now crying foul. Also got a chuckle reading the last paragraph quoting O’Connell and our “integrity Panel”.

Leagues plan to block player clearances until permit plan in place

Clearance requests from the Eastern and Northern football leagues are set to explode if rival competitions play on this year. But, as leagues scramble to control player movement, a solution has been placed on the table.

A temporary permit system is on the table as leagues scramble to control player movement following the decision by the Eastern and Northern football leagues to cancel their seasons.

Clearances could explode with some metropolitan and country leagues still to decide if they play on in 2020 or reset for 2021.

A host of players have already flagged interest in switching leagues in the days since the NFL and EFL’s announcement but it will not be that simple.

Clearances must remain open nationally as interstate leagues confirm return-to-play dates but the NFL and EFL – with agreement from fellow metropolitan leagues – will block clearances until all competitions declare their intentions.

AFL Victoria is expected to announce the permit system in the coming days.

NFL boss Peter McDougall said he would prefer to see transfers closed completely.

“I don’t think (transfers) should stay open and the metro leagues have made that clear to AFL Vic, we would like them closed yesterday,” McDougall said.

“At the moment we’d put a hold on any transfers until AFL Vic puts in place a temporary permit facility that may allow a player to go and play but only for a limited time and they would revert back to their original club.

“Once the other leagues have made a decision players may not be able to go anywhere anyway, if I was a player I’d be waiting to find out who is playing before I made any decision.”

Southern league CEO Lee Hartman said the league had wanted transfers closed because it was aware some leagues could pull out.

“Unfortunately, because it’s a national system and interstate will be playing in July and even the back end of June, it has to be kept open,” Hartman said.

“We are collectively looking at a potential permit system, rather than a transfer, so a player may stay on his original club’s list.”

Hartman said a restriction on the numbers of players joining clubs would be part of the discussion and believed most clubs were already at maximum points and could struggle to recruit anyway.

VAFA CEO Brett Connell was adamant an huge influx of transfers would not be allowed to ensure a league’s season remained fair.

“The biggest threat to any of our competitions is a compromised season with a rush of players coming in on permits who then leave,” he said.

“It compromises clubs too, if senior guys miss and go down to reserves footy, all of a sudden you’ve got blokes not coming back because they weren’t supported.

“By coming into the ammos, players who’ve come from paid leagues have to go through an integrity panel anyway, they’re not just going to get a tick and walk in.”

Unbelievable, they can’t be bothered playing this year and they still want to deny players the opportunity to play in leagues that aren’t so soft?

Also disappointing as I know some players want transfers, don’t want to go back next year.

Can’t be bothered? VAFA will mostly not play either and if they do will be virtually in from of knowone anyway. Is that really local footy?

They play in front of virtually no one already! Ive probably seen one VAFA H&A game that would have had over 500 people in attendance! Even most finals wouldn’t get more than 500.

500? Your looking at 100 or less. And how do you police it? All these other leagues calling it quits and want to go and watch a game. Unless every ground is fenced off and u have someone at the gate with a counter, 1 in and 1 out. All these supporters complaining about calling off the season, you won’t be able to go and watch anyway!!

My club is going to have a protest corresponding with each home game :)

I believe I cop a bit of backlash here but why do I get the feeling that leagues are selling clubs false hope & that footy will magically be able to start after June 22.

Just this week word filtered out of the AFL Vic / League CEOs that AFL Vic can't give a date on when footy is starting as the govt can't give medical clearance to do so.
Most venues aren't gated so clubs cannot control numbers.
If crowds are allowed, all patrons upon entering a venue will need to have their names registered on a database, much like training at the moment.

To have ANOTHER volunteer archive up 100s of peoples names at the gate and be met with refusal from some, then receive abuse from those refused entry, just won't be practical

Pack it up boys - see you next year

Does anyone believe the hype around multiple/large volume transfers is a load of bull dust? I am seeing a few posts on social media (and other bigfooty forums) that all these EFL & NFL players will head to vafa. I personally think each club would be lucky to get more than 3 or 4 players from other leagues as most players will be bound to play for the club next season and wouldnt make the switch over just for 1 season. Or might just enjoy having a season off?
A lot of us VAFA folk seem to think players from these leagues only play for money when in fact, a majority play for the love of the game and the club and culture they have created.
I personally can't see many transfers being done but would like to hear everyone's thoughts

VAFA would start on July 25 , not June 22 .

They are allowing 100 people at indoor venues by mid July, there will be more allowed outdoors!

Hell they are holding an unlimited outdoor gathering tomorrow, if cases don’t spike massively from that the government has no excuse to stop local footy

They aren’t allowing 100 by mid July. They are hoping around that mark. He has already stated there is not set dates for numbers and things to reopen, he does it as he sees fit. Good on them having optimism, but with numbers not decreasing at all, I can’t see him allowing crowds to local football games over numerous comps.

In the Edfl they have 13-15 different venues used on a Saturday for seniors games. VAFA have a hell of a lot more then that. Include every other comp around Victoria. Your looking at hundreds of venues used that could possibly have 200-300-400+ people gather there. No chance he is going to allow that in 5 weeks.

Good on there for having a crack, but I think it’s giving all these players false hope!!

You are acting as if it’s the total number of people spread across the state? The only thing that matters is how many are in an enclosed space.

The biggest barrier to other leagues is they have much higher spends and a limit on paying crowds is a killer. No one pays to attend VAFA games so a crowd limit is not an issue.

As for numbers not decreasing, we are going along at a handful a day, majority of which are from people arriving back in the country and in quarantine. If there was a continuous spread of community transmission you might have a reason for keeping everyone locked up, but there isnt. The other day there were 6 cases, 4 from overseas and 2 from a known family cluster.

We could shut the borders, not even allow citizens in and our cases would be zero. But the fact is people sitting in quarantine from arrival aren’t spreading it and are not an excuse to stop us living our lives.

My optimism is just reiterating what the VAFA is telling it’s clubs, we’re playing in 2020.

Thats 100 indoors , probably be the max at any clubs social rooms during games. I stand outside , quite happy to stand behind the goals and kick the ball back in.

In a normal season, transfers close on the 30th of June. You don't need to provide a reason why you are transferring, so until June the 30th, why should they have to provide a reason this year ?
I fully understand this isn't a "normal year", but if someone says they want to come and play with their brother / mate / sister / cousin, then how can they be stopped ?
