Take away the drama of the situation and I reckon it would be called every day - irrelevant that it’s just your momentum if your momentum ends with the kicker on the ground (not getting into whether Doc milked it or not - it there was a definitive angle we would’ve seen it by now).

And I’m not sure anyone can point to a rule that says Newnes shouldn’t have kicked it

So what? We had multiple chances to actually build a legitimate lead, blew them, and then got bailed out by some dodgy umpiring and an amazing clutch kick. Winning 3 quarters means jack sh*t if the end result is still a loss and the reality is it would have been if not for the above

Jesus enough with this dodgy umpire crap. The free kick was there. Bradshaw fair and squarely hit him late and it doesn't matter if it was momentum's it broke the rule and was penalised.

When the umpire called the down field free kick Newnes and Eddie were at very similar distances to where the ball went out.
The ump chose Jack to kick it...game over, we win.
Its not decided on who was closest when the ball crossed the line.
Its always when the ump calls it.

The initial free kick might have been paid immediately, but the down field was a short time after that.

Enough time for Jack to get closer.
