Fair point, but I'd prefer to keep our pillars in their optimal positions and not changed things around so much

Team selection obviously went for a Tigers/Eagles type set-up, only issues is, Cameron is a witches hat

Tigers:
-Lynch
-Jack
-Soldo
-Nankervis/Chol

Eagles:
-Kennedy
-Darling
-NicNat
-Allen/Williams
hav
Pies:
-Cox
-Mihocek
-Grundy
-Cameron

I'd like to keep this formation, with somebody else instead of Cameron, that ISN'T going to disrupt our structure

Obviously Geelong are different with Blicavs, because he literally plays everywhere, but that's a unique situation

I'd rather leave the tape measure out of the selection process. Your logic would have us leaving JDG out of the team!!

Besides, Ruscoe isnt a midget and we also have WHE (when he finds form). Our forward setup with Cox and Cameron wont work.

Got nothing to do with height, it's about the role in the team. You move Roughy or Moore into the ruck and I bet you'll see Noble trying to defend 1 on 1 vs their tallest forward

I think today we looked decent with Cox sitting at full forward, it helped Stevo/JT. If Cox goes into the ruck, then Mihocek is the only tall down there, and we look how we've looked all year

When De Goey comes in, he should play predominately midfield imo

Could work to our advantage. We've finally found some form and a long break may not be what we want. Carlton just came off a nine day break and didn't fire a shot after halftime. Last week North and the Pies were both coming off nine day breaks and both were woeful in the first half. Maybe rustiness sets in.
It’s not exactly our break that worries me, I just can’t seem to comprehend how the AFL have scheduled these games. How have we found two situations where we play 4 games in 13 days in 4 states, the last of which was a 4 day break with a 3 and a half hour plane trip against a side that had 10 days off if I remember correctly.

Now we have another 5 day break, against a side that has a bye. Then we have a bye the week after. It can’t have been too hard to schedule us for a bye next weekend instead of The one after or at least play us on the Saturday.

And if they have a pre finals bye again, and we make the finals. We’ll have a situation where we play 2 games in a month and any touch we did have is gone.

It’s ridiculous.

I think you'd probably see Madge taking someone bigger rather than Noble.

We probably can't win this match, we probably won't try and we'll probably get hammered.

Flogs will bay for the coach's blood.

Fun and games

I agree. The A.F.L has screwed us twice now with their ridiculous compressed draw.Is there any reason why we keep getting shorter breaks than our opponents?I can’t think of a legitimate one.

IN: L.Greenwood, T.Ruscoe
OUT: C.Mayne (inj), D.Cameron

B: B.Maynard, J.Roughead, J.Madgen
HB: J.Noble, D.Moore, J.Crisp
C: J.Daicos, S.Pendlebury, T.Phillips
HF: J.Elliott, B.Mihochek, W.Hoskin-Elliott
F: J.Stephenson, M.Cox, J.Thomas
R: B.Grundy, T.Adams, T.Brown
I: I.Quaynor, L.Greenwood, C.Brown, T.Ruscoe

Pretty straight forward IMO, arguments can be made for Cal Brown to go for an outside mid (eg: rantall/bianco debut).

From here, injuries aside we can expect the below changes:

J.DeGoey > T.Ruscoe
A.Treloar > C.Brown
J.Howe > J.Madgen
S.Sidebottom > T.Brown
Mayne ?
Langdon ?

B: B.Maynard, J.Roughead, J.Crisp
HB: J.Howe, D.Moore, J.Noble

Whats happened to Shaz...he could free up Roughy or Moore to do second ruck work
He's too small for that. Only 191cm and 87kgs - Madge would be better suited to it. If Langdon or Murphy came back in it could help as they're good interceptors. Maybe when Howe is back?

Ruscoe didn't play today, yet you've omitted him, and also included him in your team for next week.

I'd hate to read your comments after we have been flogged.

If we get flogged next week, my comments after that will be that we should win against Gold Coast.

Do you base your confidence in our team on their last game, and that's it? Regardless of the next opponent, the number of days till the game, the amount of rest the opponent has had?

Nope. I base it on clear form trajectory since halftime last week. Confidence is growing and with it the run and dare we have been missing for so long. You clearly haven't noticed.

Our next opponent is equal top of the ladder, they play at home every single week, and they are coming off their bye.

We are coming off a five day break.

We are still a tad under-manned.

Trying too hard to win this one might not be in our long-term best interests. So if we lose, even if it is by a lot, I won't worry too much.

If we had lost today, I would have been worried. But we didn't, so I am not worried.

I think everything's going pretty much to plan. I think we're a chance for the flag, in fact.

But I don't think a win next week is on the cards

Wouldnt change a thing going into this game, however with Mayne getting injured he's going to force our hand.

Out: Mayne, In: Greenwood.

Very easy change in the scheme of things.

Cameron lucky to keep his spot, however the structure today proves this works. The big boys keep defenders honest and allow Stevo and JT to get off the hook, something we have desperatley missed this year.

Those dropping Cameron and not bringing in a player who can ruck, who is going to 2nd ruck?

Cox plays better when left in the forward line and not made to ruck imo. Keeping Cox at full forward is best option in 2020

Langdon in and Roughy plays 2nd ruck?
Can Checkers do it?
Ruscoe is 190cm+ isn't he, can he give it a go if he comes in?

Only other option is Lynch debut, but that's another 200cm player, which I don't think we need

Agree he needs to be dropped, but we need a dedicated ruck pinch hitter

Then give Lynch a Crack

After today's win over Carlton, we go to 8-1-5. We're now in the position where we need at least one more win to make the eight.

We will go into this game on a 5 day break. Brisbane, on the other hand, have a 12 day break after a Round 14 bye. 5 day breaks in a normal AFL season occur from time-to-time, and the games are shortened, so hopefully this isn't a problem on our end. Whilst it's clearly an advantage for Brisbane, I'm sure we will try to jump them early.

Brisbane have been in good form in 2020 and have gone into their bye equal first on 10-3. Their three losses have come from Hawthorn (way back in Round 1), Geelong by 27 points in Round 6 at the SCG and Richmond by 41 points in Round 10.

Our form this season deserves no introduction, however, there's little doubt that the Lions would remember our clinical 62-point victory on their home deck in Round 5 last year.

Despite Brisbane's good form and ladder position, their goal-kicking accuracy has been under constant scrutiny the past few weeks. This was the sole reason why they almost lost to St. Kilda in Round 13, despite St. Kilda being a good side this season.

The Lions hierarchy say they have no issues kicking goals at training, alluding to the fact that it's mostly mental. Most of us here would be well aware that some teams (I'm looking at you West Coast) this year have been able to convert goals at ease, so Brisbane will see this as an opportunity to clean up their game going forward.

This issue on our end is partially bad luck (i.e. goals from 50m out on the boundary), but no doubt our biggest problem has been giving the opposition easy looks at goal. Although we obviously need our defence to stand up both aerially and on the ground, it's vital that our midfielders continue to pressure their best distributors.

It's key that we look for ruck dominance, go head to head with Neale (Pendlebury) and keep McCluggage accountable.

And dare I say it, but are we now a good second half side?

LAST TIME THEY MET

In Round 5, 2019, Collingwood came up against a 3-1 Brisbane Lions side which had already knocked off reigning premiers WCE and GWS. The Lions were being talked about as the next big thing and potential flag favourites.

The Pies got off to a very, very hot start and took a 7.5.49 to 3.2.20 lead at quarter time. The lead was reduced 21 points at half time before an 8 to 2 goal third term gave us a massive 108 to 51 three quarter time lead. The Pies went on to win 18.15.123 to 8.13.61.

Adam Treloar had 35 touches. Phillips had 29 touches. Jack Crisp had it 27 times and Beams had 26 touches and a goal despite not being given an inch all day from his old side. Scott Pendlebury had it 26 times.

Mihocek kicked 4, DeGoey kicked 3 and Elliott, Brown, Stephenson, Cox and Thomas all had two each.

Brisbane's best performers were Witherden with 25 disposals (although how many stemmed from kick outs, I'm not sure) and McCluggage had 21 touches and 2 goals. The much-hyped Lachie Neale had a modest 24 disposals, with a lot of other Lions players well-beaten on the day.

MATCH UPS

Harris Andrews will likely go to Mihocek, if not a tall (Cameron/Cox). They will have their work cut out for them.

I think I'd like to see Pendlebury stopping Neale's run out of the stoppages, or at the very least keeping him accountable.

As for our backs vs. their forwards, maybe:

McStay vs. Roughead
Hipwood vs. Moore
Cameron vs. Quaynor
Zorko vs. Maynard
McCluggage vs. Crisp
McCarthy vs. Madgen
Berry vs. Noble

CHANGES

Greenwood was managed for the Carlton game as this one had a 5 day break. Suspect he'll be straight back in. Given Cal Brown played some of the scratch match, you'd suspect he wasn't originally picked.

Mayne getting concussed may save Cal.

This one I'm still not sure about yet. Bucks has indicated that DeGoey may make an early return soon, albeit with a glove on. We're not sure whether this will impact where he lines up. Given we've got the bye after this one, he may be better off resuming against the Suns instead. But again, JUST PLAY HIM!

Have probably forgotten someone again, but:

IN: Greenwood, Ruscoe (or a Rantall debut)
OUT: Mayne (inj), Cameron.

TIP

Head says Brisbane, but heart says Collingwood by 10.
I think we have little hope, the draw has been stacked against us all season.

I think we need to rest the warriors Grundy, Adams, Moore and Maynard. The club will know who needs to be rested. The last thing we want is to make the finals and have one of those 4 out injured. Single it early enough, and the Lions might also rest some players.

Out: Maynard, Moore, Grundy, Adams Mayne.

In: Greenwood, Langdon, Lynch, Wills and Rantall.

Perfect time to introduce Langdon and to bring back Greenwood before the bye.
