The Untold Story of Adelaide's Gay Hate Murders

Well, I'm still going through the thread - need to get a summary of what's been said in here. Since these things all happened nearly 40 years ago, some memories are pretty vague.

But around this time I worked for Don Storen and knew Doctor Steve. As I was from the northern suburbs and still a teenager, I knew people who had known Alan Barnes so learned back them that he was known as 'Spook'. I can't say I knew Mother Goose or Molvena that much; more like I knew of them, but these names (and other descriptions such as well-known 'Lawyer' and 'radio broadcaster - well there were a few of these...) bring back memories.

Looking forward to your input when you’ve caught up with the thread. Will be interested to hear your thoughts.

From what I can remember there was all sorts of rumours about Dunstan frequenting the Green Dragon so if he was there with Storen then it makes sense how those rumours started.

Don might have attended one or two functions at the Dragon (like the opening night or similar 'gala' events to do Don a favour) but was hardly seen in public gay circles around the 'Family Era'. You were more likely to see Adriana Xenides at the Dragon than Dunstan.

Dunstan and Storen were more often seen together at culinary events (top class restaurants - again for launches and the like - and some private lunch/dinner parties) particularly after Don published his cookbook/started a restaurant/began a relationship with a guy (instead of his two previous wives).

It does remind me that Adelaide really was like a 'small country town' back then. Even as a teen, it wasn't that hard back then to say you 'knew' Don Dunstan (or insert any other well known figure) because you probably knew someone who was friends with them and you had met - however briefly - in a social situation.

I think Storen was seen as a 'person of interest' because he knew virtually EVERYONE in the gay and influential/cultured/important SA communities back then.

I was watching "I'll Be Gone in the Dark", the HBO series about the Golden State Killer and it reminded me of this thread, and how so many people have added so much information on it that would otherwise be unavailable, including some first-hand accounts.

Unfortunately, it seems that the trail is cold on this right now.

Just realising - with the aid of wikipedia - that Don Dunstan was resident in Victoria during 1982-86 (the main era of 'the family conspiracies'). Don't think the Dragon opened until 1983 so he wouldn't have been there (or in cahoots with Storen) very often..

All those first 4 pages did was make me angry, not at the authors obviously, but that this situation even exists. Why would BVE give any further admission or testimony when:

A. He most likely has a clear disdain for police since he basically witnessed vice officers kill George Duncan and get away with it.
B. He allegedly offered to confess to more after his mother's death and then it happened, and nothing.
C. They locked him up in a virtual paradise of young men, gave him protective status and serve him up his favourites. Why would he want to leave?

Why is it so quiet in here? I've read the new book and I know there's some eye popping information in there but there's a lot to take in.

Did any of us know BVE was also a crossdresser?

You're making the assumption that the clothes were for him to wear..

But I have a vague memory I might have heard/read something in the past.

One of the girls he worked with saw him in drag.

Regarding 'Doctor Steve', I knew him around the time of the murder(s).

I can't tell from the recent photos from court-cases if it is the same one I remember. Wish I could tell for sure.

The one in my memory did live for a time with an Adelaide lawyer in North Adelaide. These two weren't in a relationship as the lawyer had a boyfriend. There were rumours on the scene that 'Doctor Steve' (probably in his mid-30s at the time) had slipped something in the drinks of (legal age) youngsters he wanted to take home. I remember asking someone about this and they commented 'most of those guys would gladly accept those pills if they were offered them by him' and I had to agree.

After the Kelvin murder, a plain-clothes detective attended the Mars Bar most nights, hanging with the manager and accompanying him to some other venues/events. I suppose it was a chance for him to observe the happenings on the scene and perhaps overhear something of interest.

One night he was there and I, along with a bunch of other attendees, was invited back to someone's place for drinks. The detective accompanied the group to this impromptu party and there were a number of people already there when we arrived, including the above lawyer and Doctor Steve.

I wondered later to someone where Doctor Steve had disappeared to after we arrived and was told that once he had heard there was a detective at this informal get-together, he had gone and hidden in a bedroom or wardrobe.

I've seen a few comments about 'tv/radio personalities' in this thread. Though some are about Ric Marshall (who I only saw as a kid watching 'Young Seven' the children's TV show he used to co-host), I can think of a few (one of whom is, I think, still working in Adelaide media) others - two of them were sports commentators/reporters.

The one I think still works in Adelaide may have never married. He mainly reported on AFL so wouldn't be surprised if he's actually a member of the bigfooty forum lol. I doubt he had anything to do with the Family, but it's notable that quite a few in the media were known to like to pick up guys outside of 'the scene' at this time.

The other one I know of was, at the time, probably mid-30s and married with kids. He didn't socialise at any of the pubs/clubs on the scene - at least that I knew - as he was quite high profile at the time. But he used to drive to some of the beats around Adelaide - probably after he had finished his sports reporting duties at Channel 7 and/or the radio station he also worked for (5AD?) - and pick up guys. He seemed to like those who were boy-next-door types, like myself back then, aged around 20.

So it was no surprise to me a year or two after I first encountered him to read the story 'mystery attack on Adelaide TV personality' in the Advertiser.
Apparently he had offered some young guy a lift around the vicinity of the Torrens Bridge (aka the 'Number One' beat) late at night and (I assume after the personality put the hard word on him) the young guy had pulled a knife and took quite a few slices out of our sports reporter.

I thought at the time 'I wonder how he is going to explain this to his missus'. I knew he had a wife and kids as he'd earlier offered me the chance to stay at his house for a week when his family were going interstate for a holiday and it was impossible for him to go because of 'work duties'. I'm not sure if he was wanting me to cook and clean for him during this time, but I knew he did expect me to have duties in the bedroom and - for his particular fetish - in the bathroom.

There were plenty of other 'media-types' in those times (some are still writing/broadcasting) who, if they weren't 100% gay, were certainly interested in a casual encounter with the same sex. Even those who were 100% heterosexual could often be seen at public events socialising with well-known gay personalities (like Don Storen or others well-known in the arts industry).

Any hints (initials?) re media personalities being discussed in this thread (I was living in regional SA in early 1980s, so didnt see much Adelaide tv at that time)?

Has anyone else read the book?

I know Kurve has and we would love to discuss it further here. HK_Hawk has also read it I think.

I know that some of the info in the book is true because I’ve verified it through other sources (eg Pru Firman’s original name) but there is still a lot of new info that needs to be analysed/verified.

One example - the book says that BvE and Derrance were lovers. Has anyone heard this before?
