I can't understand why people want to keep players who want to leave. Come round 6 next year, Essendon haven't won a game, which is probable. Do you Think the boys who wanted out but we persuaded to stay will be committed to the season?

Get rid of whoever wants out, build a side around blokes who want to play and want to buy in. **** the rest.

Consensus in this thread, as I understand, is that we keep Ridley and McGrath (VC and C respectively) on the list, trade out or delist everyone else, pick 35 kids in this draft so they can "develop together", and in three years we're a premiership side. Seems pretty reasonable on paper, I grant you.
No, that's Milanista and yodellinhank. Everyone else is a bit more conservative.

It's possible but I don't think it is anywhere near probable.
I think it's very probable. Essendon win 6 games I think, I stopped barracking probably last year. The highest winning margin was 15 points. If Essendon get three of the top 8 sides in the first few rounds, they're ****ed. Sides below Essendon will fly past them.

Depends on how you look at it. I want everyone who doesn’t want to buy in and be at the club gone. I’m just hoping that’s only a small amount of players. If that’s everyone but Ridley and McGrath well.....35 kids it is!!!

i understand that passion but people forget that quite a few tigers players wanted out after 2016 season, lids was only casualty I think. Cotchin then lifted club on his shoulders and said follow me, the rest is history.

what the club needs is leadership and drive, it can turn around quickly if you have that niche.

Seemingly gettable, mainly based on opportunity that we could offer, out of contract players of interest:

- O'Halloran, GWS, athletic hard running 186cm, 84kg inside mid, sub 3s 20, Vic Metro 2018 captain;
  • agility run, 8.036s, 2nd (1st = Izak Rankine, 6th = Chayce Jones, 8th = Connor Rozee)
  • Yo-Yo test, 21.6, equal 5th (1st = Ned McHenry, 2nd = Sam Walsh)
  • 20m sprint, 2.96s, 8th (2nd = Connor Rozee, 4th = Izak Rankine, 10th = Sam Sturt)
  • 2km time trial, 6.14, 9th (2nd = Chayce Jones, 3rd = Sam Walsh)
  • standing vertical jump, 66cm, equal 10th
- Markov, Richmond, super athletic, hard running 188cm half back;
- Clavarino, St Kilda, 197cm 2017 U18 AA full back;
- Ronke, Sydney, explosive small forward.

Edit: Ely Smith is not out of contract but his name has been mentioned a bit because Daniher is set to become a Lion. He's a 188cm, 86kg nutter of an inside mid with the following 2018 test results:

  • agility run, 8.328, 9th (1st = Izak Rankine, 6th = Chayce Jones, 8th = Connor Rozee)
  • Yo-Yo test, 21.4, equal 7th (1st = Ned McHenry, 2nd = Sam Walsh)
  • 20m sprint, ?? (2nd = Connor Rozee, 4th = Izak Rankine, 10th = Sam Sturt)
  • 2km time trial, ?? (2nd = Chayce Jones, 3rd = Sam Walsh)
  • running vertical jump, 86cm, equa; 4th

I'd add the attributes of O'Halloran and Smith to our midfield without a moments hesitation. Both 3rd year players next year.

Essendon have had years to do that. I don't accept that. They've had many opportunities, but taken none. Why would next year be any different?

I think you try to keep players that don’t want to be there for external reasons, you back in your culture to try and change their mind - Sydney with papley and O’keefe. If they wants out and it’s culture related, you have zero chance of keeping them.

Too many older players on the list dont care enough. Hopefully its the younger group that crave success and have a desire to win. Id almost cop a spoon next year if it meant we got our hands on Jason Horne, wowee he is impressive.

All about that 2021 draft

Joe band 1 (7)
Saad for FC 2021 1st
Merrett and 2021 2nd for Hawks 4 and 2021 1st
Our 6 for dogs 12 and 2021 1st (No deficit for JUH)
Raz for Crows 29
Cats want a flag and are keen on Higgins I’d offer Them Shiel and we pay part of his wage they’ll jump at him. Take pick 15 2021 1st
12 for Pies 1st helps them with their academy player
15 for the Eagles 2021 1st gets them back into the 1st round

2020 4, 7, 29, 42
2021 Our 1st, Blues 1st, Cats 1st, Dogs 1st, Hawks 1st, Pies 1st, Eagles 1st

Gives us 12 months to really develop a list strategy. Also get 2 really good picks this year.
I genuinely think we need something drastic to change, what I’ve suggested above would be the most aggressive rebuild in history but it might be what we need to do?

Would love to add O'Halloran and Ely Smith to the list. What are both players worth in single trades would be my question. Ely Smith could be included in any Daniher deal but if somehow Daniher stayed id still want Smith for the right price. So what would Brisbane want for him? Ive seen people mention pick 41 for O'Halloran but i couldn't see GWS doing that personally unless their cap is bursting at the seams. Maybe we can get creative and get some extra currency for Fantasia/Guelfi/Gleeson if they can find new homes.

That 2021 draft would be epic. 7 1st rounders haha

Amen.

I also hope that any picks we get are used in the draft instead of used on B graders who might help us eke out an extra win or two but don't really take us anywhere (Exhibit A: Ben Brown). I'd be OK with trying to pry a highly rated youngster from the likes of GWS but I'd be very wary of going after guys who have been on a list for a few years who are not best 22. The "he only can't get a game because he's behind gun X" more often than not leaves you with a Shattock or Prismall than a Josh Kennedy (Sydney).

If there is cap space to fill up then see if some contracts can be renegotiated to front load.

I sort of feel the extra unknown of this year's draft could bizarrely work in our favour as Dodoro and co might not have seen enough to be too cute with picks. Probably just wishful thinking!

If Matthew Kennedy, Darcy Fort, Zach Sproule, Xavier O'Halloran, Jarrod Lienert, Bytel, Hind, Michael Knoll, Hayden McLean are all without a contract if the price/money is right they could offer us some decent backup

I made the mistake of going to trade and draft board holy sh*t

Saad worth a third
Daniher worth a second
Jesus
saad for a third is taking the piss but I can see why someone from another club wouldn't want to give up more than a second for an inconsistent, injury prone tall

I think you have to back a better club to get his body right, looking at Brissy they have fixed a few broken players they would look at him and go that's a premiership next year if he stays fit

Neither ohalloran or Smith can get a game for their respective clubs.
they are far from guarantees to help much at all
I think there is a danger to think these blokes plus constable and Brodie are going to help too much.
brent Prism all is probably a good warning for us

Jack Steele is a good example for the other side of it though, for the right price I think it’s worth it going after these types.

You are right but the odds lean my way I reckon quite significantly
i also think there is a philosophical element to this.
we have forgotten how to go to the draft and develop our own young players a bit. Ridley is one that we have developed with a pick in the 20s.
if gws want a pic in the 40s for ohalloran fair enough- in another thread I suggested maybe brodie and wright for a second round pick next year but watching this weeks final I have concluded we are way off the pace and rutten probably deserves kids he can nurture and develop
