Next year will be thirty years since Millane’s tragic passing. Could that be a good time to reintroduce the number again. Personally I’d like to see someone like Maynard wear number 42.

I feel that it’s best retired. Forever Millane’s legacy. If it were a low number I’d understand the need to reintroduce it but really if the family want it retired then I don’t see what there is to be gained by bringing it back and heaping Pants’ legacy on the shoulders of some young lad that wasn’t even born when he passed away

I can understand why you say that on one hand, but on the other hand if it was reintroduced it would help to respect and honour one of our greatest ever players. No number has ever held greater significance on a Collingwood jumper in my opinion.
Craig Kelly once said in an article written by ‘Caro’ about nine years ago that Pants himself would have loved to have see the number out there again. If I knew how to post the article I would.

Sean Millane discussed this in his chat with Shaun McKernan. His thoughts were a “fallen” round near Darren’s birthday involving all clubs to honour all past players. As part of this the Collingwood 22 could wear 42 on their breast or above the number.

Personally I’d like to see the winner of the Darren Millane award given the honour each season or alternatively for 42 to be made the captains number.

With all due respect, this debate has been had many times. The family want it retired and that’s how it will stay.

until the Family want it back in the mix it’s a moot point
Thought respect for the families desire was a given, so didn't add that condition. Probably should have though.

Think it would feel a bit awkward for a young kid to come in and wear that Jumper.

Keep it retired.

The club was going to bring the 42 back on the 20th anniversary of Pants' passing. The memory of Millane throwing the ball above his head when the siren went in the 1990 GF, then only to hear he played that whole finals series with a broken thumb, makes the 42 continue the story and memory of Darren Millane. I couldn't see anyother player wearing it.

As a younger fan, I do not know much about the legacy of Millane. I know about the finals series he played through with a broken thumb and the tragic death, is there more to the legacy that someone could share?

Imagine how much you could learn & would be talked about if someone else was to wear the 42.

The 42 belongs to the club not the Millane family.

Come at me I'm ready!

Imagine Wayne Carey playing on the wing. That was what Pants was like.

This comes up every now and then but it will always be up to Pants's family as it should be

skillful, fearless, inspired team mates, tried out at Hawthorn b4 Collingwood (he didn't like them / they didn't like him), owned the grandstand wing at Vic Park, visited kids in hospital, scared blokes in pubs, put a beautiful bump on Worsfold once (Worsfold no pushover), most number of death notices in a Vic newspaper, etc etc
