We're probably not going to fill the list, even with Mackay, so signing him makes little difference.

We have some dead wood to clear in 2021. Also, we have Smith off contract next year I think. I also reckon the club might be looking to move Scholl and Hamill up the ground. Clearly we don't rate this draft highly, looks like 3 main draft picks now.

If we are taking 3 picks we better not let 23 go to waste

I'm not sure WTF the club thinks it's doing. The news about Hinge came from nowhere.

The only thing which makes sense would be moving a player like Mackay/Seedsman/Davis, who has no future at the club beyond 2021, onto the rookie list (as per the AFL's announcement yesterday). That would free up a senior list position for signing a DFA (i.e. Hinge).

Hinge was also offered an extension to stay at Brisbane and declined so he could come here, so we must have a fair bit of interest in him

We've obviously offered him 2 years or more because otherwise he accepts their 1 year offer......very popular among their group so no doubt they would have liked to keep him.

The don't want to take Borlase in the ND, unless another club bids on him. Their strong preference is to take him as a Cat B rookie.

Looked pretty good at the Championships in 2016 and was always one of their better players when I watched the NEAFL in 2018 and 2019.

Reading the article, it appears that it needs to happen in time for the 2nd DFA period (1-2 December). It's not open slather for mid-season changes.

One interesting quote from the article is this: "As has been the case in recent seasons, $80,000 of each standard rookie's contract falls outside the salary cap." This means that there's no benefit to putting a highly paid player on the rookie list (vs a minimum wage player), as only $80k of their salary is excluded, and both players would be on at least $80k.

I wish Mason all the best but he came across as someone that shouldn't get past the first trim of applicants. All his talk about "now I'm ready to REALLY try" is just sad. I don't know what he thought he would get out of that interview, but it was not good.

To which the honest answer was & still is "no - but he always gives 100%". What made him look so good early this year was the fact that he was putting in 100% effort, which contrasted starkly with the likes of Crouch x2 (and many others), who were barely giving 20%.

The problem with that is it overrates Keays.

Don't get me wrong, he was almost the only player that could hold his head high in the first month or two back from the Covid break. He is however a very limited player. His skills are fairly ordinary. He's just a good trier. Look at his form in the last 6 weeks of the season to see the norm.

Players like Borlase might not make it, but might have a higher ceiling than a guy like Keays. I hope we don't think Hinge can be Keays like rather than have a greater scope.

One thing is for sure, if Keays is still getting a game in 18 months time, we are in all sorts of trouble as a club.

I'd be very surprised if Keays wasn't in our side in 18 months time.

Whoever we get in this draft most likely be ready for full time inside minutes in that time frame + Keays has some variability which will keep him around for a while. Especially as Keays is a worthwhile tagger to keep us competitive (and noting a part of Keays "drop in form" was tagging duties).

“After list lodgements are completed, the League will consider Bryce to be officially retired and placed on the inactive list.

I'm fine with Gibbs taking up a rookie list spot if it's some sort of master-stroke to make sure we have a spot available in the supplementary draft period, instead of relying on someone to end up on the long term injury list?

Because we still have to pay out the last year of his contract, we didn't have enough room to include it under the 2020 salary cap, and we aren't allowed to pay players who aren't on our playing list(s). This way he's off the main list, and $80k of his salary is excluded from the cap.
