I like the idea of a misery index
Why are GC considered n/a?

For true misery to occur, there has to be some genuine hurt which requires passion and emotion to be involved. This generally stemming from loss or unmet expectations. GC lacks fans with any passion, they've never achieved anything so have never lost anything and no one expects anything of them.

They are people too

Pies 2018 would be up there

Yeah, that was a heart breaker. Very high misery factor, somewhat offset by the fact that they were probably lucky to be there (beat Richmond on an off night) and had already won a flag within the last 10 years. Collingwood's history of GF losses is also a factor that adds a few points on the index.

Collingwood has played in and lost more GF than any other team - on this measure, I would say that they have had cumulatively over many decades- the greatest misery, well-earned nickname of Collywobbles'.

Ironically but for the bounce of the ball St Kilda could have deprived Collingwood of their most recent flag. Interesting idea - the 'misery index' - of course defining the inputs into the benchmark - changes the results.

Geelong supporters wouldn't be happy with their loss against Richmond - they are still unhappy about losing to Carlton in 95 - those that are old enough to remember why Geelong earned the moniker of 'handbaggers' - good enough to show up - not good enough to win -just ask WC or anyone who attended the two GF in which Geelong were comprehensively smashed by the same side in the same way - that WC team was just awesome.

In more recent times - GWS supporters would have to feel more than a touch of misery - on paper the best list any coach could wish for - but sadly played in a GF - sans most of their elite midfield due to injury. Why they haven't made more GF appearances when they should have ( and won them) is a testament to how hard it is to actually win one.

I agree with Carlton supporters being more angry than miserable about the nuffery at the Club since the AFL decided to do what it did - and has never ever even gone close to doing the same thing to any other Club - for the same infractions repeated by other Clubs, since.

Surely the Saints are #1.

27 spoons, 1 flag. Even their recent period where they made the GF two years in a row and were a bounce away from winning a flag is remembered for negative Ross Lyon footy and then him walking out on the club.

Melbourne fans who followed their club passionately in the late 2000s and 2010s are a bit miserable, but plenty of Melbourne fans still look back on the 1950s like it has relevance. They were good once. Same as Richmond who are good again but were garbage for 30 years. St Kilda have pretty much always been garbage.
1950s? How many Melbourne fans currently alive are getting joy from that?
Very few, if any.

Pies 2010 GF victory plus plenty of joy in winning a prelim.
Fans have had good times.

You conveniently ignore Geelong winning three flags.
07 08 and 11.
Very happy bunch of fans.

I've seen 5 GF wins.

I think we've been more angry than miserable in our lean patch.
This!
I got spoilt so good in first decade of following Carlton even the darkest period in our history for 20 years I still know how brilliant it was, I know no other supporters would have experienced such a brilliant show of football I got to see so often.

I feel so sorry for what the good Demons fans have experienced for so long. Misery has been their norm. I reckon their 1987 finals runs was one of the best experiences ever but even that finished in absolute horror in their prelim final disaster which sadly was also the end of Robert Flower's career.

St.Kilda have easily the most miserable history but none of their fans are old enough to have experienced all that misery in their own life. The Demons fans living have gone to hell and back and back to hell so often in all the time I been following that I hope they get to experience some good before most of them are six feet under. I lost any sympathy for St.Kilda long ago after the series of good coaches like Ken Sheldon, Stan Alves and Blight tried to help them out but they just return to shit ways and nearly always self-inflicted.

Largely depends on age. For example, as a Dogs supporter in their thirties, I wouldn’t swap what I have seen with a Carlton supporter, but if i was in my forties or older you would.

Do GF losses equal misery?

What alot of supporters ignorantly dont take into account - is the talent level of each competing GF Side

Malthouse has consistently said that the proudest GF he has been involved in is narrow loss - ithink it was 8 pts to the allmighty Lions

They had a team of battlers Coll - Carl Steinfort youd remember him at Geel - slow as buggery - and lucky to kick 35 metres - they had plenty like that - so with the side they had - and given the quality of the opposition - it was a great GF effort - they gave the Bris Lions an allmighty scare -

I was thinking about which team's supporters suffered the most misery.

I came up with a simple fan misery index.

Obviously the higher the score the more that teams fans have suffered.

Poor buggers supporting Melbourne FC have had a wretched old time.

AFL team fan's misery index by team supported:

Melbourne 57
Saints 30
Blues 25
North 22
Freo 21
Bombers 21
Lions 18
Port 17
Swans 15
Crows 12
Pies 9
GWS 6
Hawks 6
Bulldogs 5
Eagles 3
Geelong 3
Richmond 1
Gold Coast NA
losing 27 grand finals doesnt help your health ????????????????????

Very happy bunch of fans.

Haven' 'ignored' anything - Geelong were certainly the best side of that time- bigger/stronger/faster and bigger again are the words that come to mind - way way way ahead of every other side in the competition as far as team fitness and strength and speed all over the park - amazing huh ....just amazing the sports 'scientist' and 'conditioner' employed there by BomberT certainly knew what they were doing...so far ahead of every other team's fitness regime...

I guess if 'whatever it takes' to make fans happy is fair - then Geelong fans should be happy.

I won't mention COLA though - that sort of gets Sydney supporters feeling miserable.

Yeah we are pretty chill, club has stayed competitive for a very long time, most of us have seen us win three flags, rest is a bonus. Would have been nice to beat Richmond but we were very competitive and they were just a better team last year.

On the 747's bitterness index, St Kilda fans by a fair way from Essendon fans, then everyone else.

Agreed.

1. Saints
> daylight
2. Essendon
> toss up between
3. North
4. Melbourne

Imagine supporting the Saints, winning 20 odd games a season with Riewoldt and co in their absolute prime, and losing those heartbreakers in both 09 and 10. Easy to see why they're so sensitive on BF :D
