Re: Marcus Allan

He's a good decision maker, IMO. Uses the ball well but hasn't got the supposedly 'much needed' pace/height for the modern game.

Spot on sherminator, looked pretty slight in his only game last year but surprised to see him listed as 180cm which means his height is not a problem (taller than Power, same as a few others), more his body size. Shouldn't be written off because of it but obviously needs to get bigger especially if he's going to be in the side as a high posession inside midfielder.

Re: Marcus Allan

I think Marcus Allan will be a surprise packet for the lions this season. He should get early opportunities with Selwood missing and fully fit with better endurance can make an impact as an inside stopper type.

Hoping anyway.

I'd like to think so too Lace Out...although may be tough for him to actually get into the side. Of course depends on injuries and the form of the whole team. Do you think he is a chance for round 1 if he does well in the NAB?

Re: Marcus Allan

He's an in and under Snuka and given we are short of them he might get a shot at some stage. No-one really stood up last year and Vossy had to play that role more than he had for a while. With him gone there is a position there for someone to take and Marcus might get a chance to take it early. At the moment you would probably bet against him but he might surprise.

Re: Marcus Allan

I think Marcus Allen is awesome. His debut last year in though wsn't exactly breath taking at least he got a chance. His preformances in the AFLQ say otherwise though and Marcus showed good fight. His preformance can only improve from here and become an extremly valuable part of the team. Esp seeing as he is quick and easy on his feet.

Btw Snuka, why is his nickname Cuz?

1. Your right Warwick, not quick. Is small so it may be assumed he's got some speed or agility. But really not an athlete type, would have to rely on his ability to find the footy, quality disposal and courage to get a game (ie. Hart-like). Hard ask these days.

2. No idea.

MarCUZ .. ?

Also the height thing isn't strictly correct. He's 181cm -- for all intent and purposes that's 6 foot, and puts him taller than Luke Power, Boomer Harvey and Marc Murphy.

His speed is ok but he doesn't have a particularly long stride, so I think with the flapping hair and pumping 'hummingbird' legs (Milne and Brent Harvey have the same action), he looks smaller than some of the long striding Notting/Black/Brennan's around him.

"The news was better for youngster Marcus Allen, who escaped a serious knee injury in the AFLQ on the weekend. It was initially thought Allen would join fellow Lions Richard Hadley, Anthony Corrie, Joel Macdonald and Pat Garner as a recipient of a knee reconstruction in 2006."

Re: Marcus Allan

Anyway back on topic...

If Marcus doesn't get any game time this year, then it will be hard to keep justifying his spot on the list. The NAB Cup is probably more important for him than anyone else. He needs to make every post a winner.

We are so used to having a poor run with injuries that we just assume that most (if not all) players on the list will have the opportunity to play senior footy. Last year, there were numerous opportunities to put Allan in the senior side but he wasn't selected. That obviously reflected poorly on him, given that a number of rookies were promoted ahead of him.

Touch wood, we won't have the same run with injuries this year. That will limit the opportunities for the fringe players. As you said Grim, pre-season is vital for Allan as he needs to elevate himself from bottom of the pile to somewhere in the vicinity of being in our top 25-30 players by the year's end. In other words, at the least, he needs to be knocking on the door to senior selection.

Re: Marcus Allan

I'm not convinced he's a player, BUT.. I would say he was perhaps a little bit unlucky last year.

His form in the Essendon NAB cup game was very good and he was pretty serviceable in the Melbourne. As a rookie, Scott Harding came into those games with no more profile than Allan, playing a similar onballers role. In effect, they were auditioning for the same part and Harding just looked a little more exciting at the time -- probably partly because he was a rookie and we had a spot available already and partly because he looked to have an edge in pace.

Seeing rookies get picked ahead of him would no doubt have dented Marcus' confidence a bit -- Harding then Stiller then Roe all going straight into the senior side ahead of him.

Regardless, he built his form up at Suncoast till he had an almost irrefutable case -- a 50 possession game from memory -- and still had to wait another two weeks to get a run.

By the time he debutted against Richmond in round 19, we'd lost Brown, Leppa, Charman, Corrie, MacDonald, McDonald, Scott, Garner, Hadley, Lappin, Clark, Drummond, and Rischitelli (I'm sure that's not all) and the dam was well and truly bursting. We got monstered. Hard way to say hello to the big league.

As I said, Not sure he's AFL class, but may have been unlucky last year.

Sam Mitchell was similar when he started. Cuz wouldn't go far wrong modelling himself on Sammy, I reckon.

Re: Marcus Allan

A lazy 3 goals 12 possies tonight!! Just listened on the radio from half time and he sounded lively and kicked all 3 after picking up the ball close to the goal square. Life up forward for Marcus? Another option to fill the small, crumbing forward position?

This post as with all my others regarding performances in the NAB cup of course has a 'yes I know its only the NAB cup' disclaimer.

Re: Marcus Allan

So whos jumping on my Marcus Allan Bandwagon!

Not me yet. Of his three goals, one was impressive and the other two were somewhat opportunistic, one of which he almost mucked up. IMO for the type of player he is he needs to be getting a lot of the ball to be earning his keep, and while I don't think he got a lot of game time he didn't get enough of it for me to jump onboard.

I'm also not convinced he can make it as a small forward because I would thought pace is a very important for such a role. He would have to have exceptional footy smarts to make up for that. Nevertheless good goal sense is an asset no matter where he plays.

Re: Marcus Allan

I also wanted to mention that from what I saw on Friday night, Marcus' marks were pretty much uncontested, so he's under-estimated.

Marcus and the team could use that to their advantage. As long as the balls get to him at the right place and time, he will more than play his part.

Re: Marcus Allan

His game showed why the club thought he might be worthy of a place on the senior list. At the very least, it should stop the "he's only there because of his dad" comments which have been pretty disrespectful to Marcus, his dad and the football department.

Requires plenty of improvement and by no means does Friday night's game convince me that he will be a top 22 player but what I saw against the Dogs is what I have seen from him at AFLQ level - clever little touches and a desire for the contest which belies his small stature. I still think he is probably going to be a little too "vanilla" for AFL footy - ie not outstanding in any particular attribute and without the all-round brilliance of a Luke Power - but he has some useful tools. If he was a 10% chance of an AFL career at the beginning of the season, his last game might now raise him to 15%.

Re: Marcus Allan

It will be interesting to see how Leigh plays Marcus this season. I was very encouraged with his work up forward. He positioned himself well around the packs and finished well when the opportunities presented. One preseason match doesn't mean much as Marcus would know from last year but it certainly has given us something to consider. We need a crumbing forward and if the coaching staff are going to play Power in the midfield will they give Allan a go at Browneys feet to pick up the scraps?
