Modra is best remembered for his big grabs, but was there EVER a player as good as him at the "soccer"?
The amount of times he slotted a goal off the ground from a stupid angle was ridiculous!

We should pick a match and make it our own unofficial Modra appreciation day.
Every BF crows poster that's attending the game will be forced, under the iron hands of Nikki and Mad Dog, to make a Modra banner or flag or whatever of some sorts (nothing flashy required). Banners are usually in pretty short supply, but if we managed to get even 8 or 10 "GODRA!!!" bedsheets floating around the place, it would be a pretty special occassion.

And one of his best soccer goals was against Richmond : goal of the year, at the MCG. Was absolutely bloody marvellous from an impossible angle.

He also took mark of the year at least 4 times, and still holds the record for the most goals kicked in round 1. Year 1994 against Carlton at Football Park.

He also kicked 13 twice against Richmond, and managed 10 against Melbourne, whilst playing for Fremantle, in a comical game involving Garry Lyon (now Footy show co-host) and Jeff Farmer. Needs to be seen to be believed. One of Fremantle's rare early wins in Melbourne.

I'm a big fan of Tony's (am female) and was fortunate to meet him, and have plenty of photos of him as well as with him. I have a number 6 old crows jumper as well, which he signed, for me at Victoria Park against Collingwood, on the day Collingwood had an infamous banner " Welcome to Victoria park, where the nicest people come to watch the footy". I recall telling Mods to turn around and read the banner, which he did, to absolute histerical laughter. Not just him, but McGuinness, did as well.

As for the Melbourne game, I've heard it was not about the locker, but because of being out late with someone who was "offlimits".

I was too young to appreciate Modara in his heyday. I always loved cause he was a star but it´s videos like that plus the fact that we haven´t seen anyone like him since that makes me really appreciate what he did; on the field (kicking sausage rolls) and off it by building our club (from a marketing point of view and getting sponsors interested). What a superstar!!

In year 3 it all unravelled and he left the club in a mess.

I had breakfast with Malcolm in 1999 and he said then (not half way through the season) that he'd wanted to call it quits after the 98 win but the powers that be talked him into one more year. He KNEW he was gone. They should have listened to him.

Whatever he did in 97/98 worked.... gotta respect that!

While I was the biggest Mods fan, and thought that Malcolm was the Messiah in helping us achieve what we did in those two fantastic years, I still thought that he didn't appreciate Modra getting better press than him.

In all seriousness, how effing privileged are those of us who experienced Modramania first hand at AAMI and beyond? You don't appreciate as much as you should at the time - it's the same with Carey and Jarman in their pomp (I never got to see Ablett in the flesh ).

His GOTY vs Richmond at the G (1995 or 6?) wasn't soccered, it was a snap after herculian first, second and third efforts (It's at 3:43 on the above Youtube clip).

To still have the presence of mind and ability to slot it after all that work was just crazy.

I am pretty sure it had nothing to do with that... Malcolm, whilst eccentric, was not a pump me up egotist at all. Actually a more humble man you'd be hard pressed to find. I think it had more to do with Mods off field antics than on (something Woosha is now experiencing I feel).

That would be a very good indication of his value to the premiership.

9th ... and he was the top vote-getting forward (not counting resting midfielders). His 2nd best return in a B&F - he finished 3rd to Tony McGuinneth in 93 when he kicked his bag of 129.

And he was AA Full-Forward in 1997, let's not forget that either. It wasn't just us who thought he contributed to the flag effort that year.

In the 98 Melbourne semi that we lost, Modra was dragged to the bench and later put on a half back flank. According to Troy Bond, during their phone exchange on the bench Modra said to Blight "What the **** are you doing?"

Forgetting any other antics, this lack of respect may have sealed his fate. Similar to Andrew Jarman turning down the opportunity to play for the Crows in 1996 - and we know how Blight viewed that incident when he took over.

No, it was 1996. Andrew Jarman was sacked at the end of the 1996 season.

It was the game against Carlton in 1996 at optus oval. Jarman was dropped but then we had a late injury prior to flying out to Melb and when Robert Shaw picked Jarman to play, he knocked it back. Andrew Mcleod came in instead. Not sure if Jarman played again after that but he definitely sealed his fate with the decision not to play.
