It's efforts like this I am sick of, regardless if it is in the reserves.

Then walks past the contest, turning his back to the play.

And have a look at who is watching and absorbing that effort, of a nearly 300 game great of our club...

Get him to 300 to show gratitude for his loyalty then he can retire, enough is enough. 20210623_132258.gif

Comical, treating his stint in the 2nd's like a training drill he's opting to tap out of.

Enough to exclude him for another week.

spot on. This is the thing with me, people quote he got 20+ touches and should come back based on that. Possessions isnt why he was dropped. He was dropped for being soft and lazy. The vision above is a clear indication of why he isnt getting a game atm.

Terrible, weak, did not want contact and just going through the motions as if he 'tried'
the way he just wonders through and then looks back.
So Inspirational to his team mates around him.
If contact was made he would have got a free, but no, didn't want contact.

Double standards never work in sporting clubs.
The club can continue to talk the talk until the cows come home but only their actions will matter in the end.
Murphy these days is a totally conditional footballer … full stop !!
To select him will say everything about the standards the club holds …
Yes going to be one of the more interesting selection weeks for a long time id suggest .
Not just do they bring Murph back but do they make some other changes that they normally wouldn't .

I know it's only one incident, but that is unforgiveable. Like you said, you have LOB and SPS front and centre to witness it.

Its not new this is the kind of stuff that Murph has been doing for a couple of years .
He's checked out and its now more obvious just in it for the milestone is Murph .

And that's the thing, young eyes are watching.

We ALL complain we need to improve our culture but seem to add caveats to how we improve it.

Then people wonder why have been stuck in this depressing time loop for so long..

Be interested in the Clarkson or Hardwick approach on what’s best for team culture.

Give a player games while other better performing players stay in the reserves? Or make each player earn their spot and don’t compromise on standards?

Judd in his book said when he went from the successful West Coast to the losing Carlton that he saw players pretty content to take their pay cheque and not do much else. Apart from a few years under Ratts, that’s been our culture for the last 20 years.

It was like that when pagan took over, older players barely did any gym work and refused do extra when asked. Did what they liked.

I've seen very similar incidents from our co-captains and senior players this season in the senior teams and they don't get dropped.

Even Weiters has been guilty of calling for free kicks while he could influence play .....

Good question.
The problem is, we don't necessarily have many better performing players in the 2s (and a lot of under-performing players in the ones). I'd definitely bring Samo and Honey in this week first. Carrol was great, but don't think he's quite up to seniors yet.

Probably give Murph another week in the 2s, then bring him in.

We certainly have cultural problems.
And there is an argument that how we've treated Murphy (in terms of lack of selection integrity etc) has contributed to it. But I think in this particular case, the horse has bolted, and not letting him get to 300 would just come across as mean and vindictive, and very likely worsen the cultural issues. It's not like he's significantly (or any, even) worse than the 23 we're playing each week.

Interesting as from what I know Judd wasn't impressed by Ratten's coaching at all. I don't think there was too much professionalism at the club at that time either. I remember the stories at the time and criticisms of Ratten, too close to the players, players doing what they wanted to do rather than what they were asked, etc. No Plan B, I thought people were a bit rough on him at the time but Ratten seems to be have been viewed as a better coach ten years later than what a lot of people thought at the time.

Don't think Carroll's too far away. Looks a class above reserves level, I also think we'd benefit from the excitement introducing young players naturally brings - he's next cab off the rank.

Season's a lost cause, may as well see what we've got to work with.

He appreciated some aspects of his coaching, while could see there were some clear blindspots.

Ratten and Bolton are two sides of the same coin IMO - both huge footy nerds, who are a fairly monomaniacal with what they want, but when they nail something it's usually because they've put a hell of a lot of thought into it. Bolton's defensive cluster in our first season showed some real heavy planning around the guys we had, and his coaching to format our defensive effort around mids running back, forwards occupying wings was really good stuff. Much easier to pull off when you have an older group though.

In a similar sense Ratten fixated on our attack, and created a unique set of scoring options/designs for our play pre and post-Fevola. Again, looked great when it came off, but wasn't a sustainable way of playing. His first year at St Kilda probably reaffirmed his credentials as a decent offensive coach who could come up with a reasonably effective gameplan out of nothing, but like us, just might not be fruitful long-term.

The class is there, but is the strength and fitness?
Would be nice for him to get a game, but maybe in another month would be better?

Looks like he's stacked on the kgs in his time, grown a bit too. Don't think he'll be expected to play much on the inside, but I'd hope we'd get him bunch up at some forward stoppages. I'd get him running off a wing and using his kicking skills.

I don't think he'll play for at least a few weeks either.

Yes, agree that Murph isn’t significantly worse than many of the 23 we’re currently playing. Think Murph falls into about 4 or 5 players fighting for about 2 spots. And there isn’t much to separate them. With about 9 games in the season to go you’d imagine he gets to 300.

But if he was getting senior games where his form was noticeably worse than other players in the seconds, simply to get him to 300 games, then can’t see that being good for team culture. Those games could be the difference between a young player “making” it in the game or staying at the club.

Think acknowledging individual milestones is important for team culture, but that milestone needs to blend in with team goals, it can’t be at the expense of team goals.

Ever thought he may just be going through the motions due to the fact if he gets a injury (serious or not) his 300 game milestone this year would be jeopardised. Damned if he does or damned if he doesn't I think. Give him the Medical sub to get him there. He's been a former champion of our club and we must respect his loyalty to the club.

If Murph is putting himself above the team to make sure he doesn’t get injured to get to 300 games then the club has massive problems with culture and player attitude.

Happy for Murph to get to 300, but team always comes first.

Regardless of where you stand on Marc Murphy, my take is this......

He Should have had the coffee and a "chat' 3+ years ago, the club didn't have the courage. Past is the Past
As he inches towards 300, he needs to get there, the season is over, rotate him in and out, medical sub etc
It's not about form, it's about the kids, balance it with both. Long after these current Employees have gone with their money, and are forgotten, what remains eternal, legacy.

This is the important part......

Teague et al, will have to go, timing, in this case, is irrelevant. What is though, We WILL get better through adjustments, the better coach/leader will prevail
OUR time will come. It MUST.

When it does, I want our club unified with all the Champions, all the disenfranchised fabric of what is CARLTON needs to be brought together.
Any real meaningful success means nothing unless it's shared with the true-hearted blues faithful, regardless of their previous shortcomings.

Long after the how and the why he got his life membership, I want murphy in the rooms drinking from the cup, along with kernahan, SOS, Elliot, etc.
Glory, honour, legacy and the hard lessons are forged with unification, in this journey has been long, difficult, sometimes embarrassing and humbling.

if you're from an age commencing circa '60's '70's, you will understand or if not, palpably imagine the cathartic experience they send us to our youth when that faithful constant in your life gets played at the end of the most important day on the AFL calendar - Lilly of Laguna

Keep your ends up and protect this anthem to your last breath as its the only one all carlton knows

I'm not for gifting players games
But I'd certainly play Marc before an injured Someone or an unfit someone.
