If we wanted to win a game and he was fit then he'd definitely play in front of Connolly.
You honestly believe he is in our best 22 when we have Webster and Paton in the side , at 34yrs of age next year this guys don't when to call it a day.
When you lose your pace as a small defender you basically finished and last year when he got out run by Sam Weideman who is nearly 100kg and 6ft 5'' showed his glaring lack of pace know.
He has been a good loyal tough servant to the club but now it's time.

I don't know whether he looks and sounds a bit like Ross Lyon did as a player but I have a lot of faith not only that Coffield will work out long term, but that he'll be a strong club leader, maybe even captain.

He's an immature kid right now in an inconsistent flaky team with little leadership. When/if he figures out what he wants to be and realises that he, along with other young guys around him, could grab this club and march it towards glory, you'll see a very different Nick Coffield. One that will be much more valuable to us than being second banana to Max King. I am confident he'll he'll drive standards at our club as a senior player and won't take any rubbish. He just has to grow up first.

Nick's a slow burn though, be patient. Today, the news is about Isak Rankine being dropped after underwhelming form. Development isn't linear.
So true.

Retirement?
Yeah maybe, but I think if he was going to retire he would have already. If he wants to go on I can't see us punting him.

Probably right, he's been as dedicated as any leader of the club. Deserves loyalty the other way.
I was thinking of his own well being. Poor guy spends six months of the year under a knife, being drained of toxins & rehabbing. He's had a rough couple of years.

For me I feel like when I’m at the best I’m only focussing on what the team needs me to do. If I continue to have a task that is just surrounded around how the team goes, I feel like my individual work takes care of itself.

Brilliant attitude! Just within that statement!

Seriously? That’s rubbish.
His year was not as great as last year
(where he showed plenty). He’s battled some injury and just as he was looking good again he got injured again.
But on the trade table? He’s pick number 8 who is 21 years old. You must be kidding?
If you think the Hind melts are tiresome. Just imagine...

No way in the world can you write a kid off at 21 , Pettracca looked bog average at 21 , Parish looked like a spud at last year at 23yrs of age.
Coffield will be one of our best players whether it is playing as a halfback , Wing or midfield I don't know but he is one of the most talented players in the side and because he has gone off the boil you don't flog him off - the kid ● Ranked 4th in Marks Per Game in 2020
We kept guys on our list like Dunstan who is slow and can't kick , so I think Coffield is more than safe considering he has scope to be better than Del Santo.
I also rate him higher than Hunter Clark so lets see what happens in a couple years before writing players off.

Most of our young draft guys still have not fully developed body wise and this is why we have to be patient because Hunter Clark and Coffield fit into the category - Gresham only just started to get his acted together in the midfield before he got injured so it has basically taken him until he is 24 to get the endurance to perform as a midfielder and still then he has not cemented his spot in there yet.

Have faith.

I do.

Unbelievable short memories on here sometimes.

Doesn't seem to be a player that is very adaptable and his intercept marking is his thing. Highmore is Coffield last year but probably already looking better. If we get Pats back we have Clark (maybe mid), Webster, Wilkie, Howard, Hill, Allison, Sinclair, Connolly, Maybe Clav and Joyce plus Gibcus and Battle, Long, Mc Kenzie, Geary etc all may need a spot in the back 6. Coffield need to reinvent himself as a mid and over take a bunch of first picked guys or leap frog guys like Highmore playing his role and do it better or hope that Highmore drops off. To me he's going to have to have to turn it around pretty quickly because under Lethlean we don't seem to get sentimental.

Highmore has played a handful of promising games (which is very exciting).

Coff finished top 10 in a B&F less than 12 months ago.

If you saw any of Coff’s junior career being adaptable is very high up on his list of strengths. He’ll be a star.

Its a massive overreaction to suggest his time could be up (and listing all those guys, one of them who isn’t even on our list and a number who dont play in defence to beef up your point doesnt help).

We basically have our backline in place except for a true CHB - could it be Battle I do not know.

Paton - Howard - Wilkie
Highmore - XXXX - Sinclair
Hill - Steele - Billings
Higgins - Battle - Butler
Gresham - King - Membery

Marshall - Crouch - Jones

Coffield / Clark / Byrne / Connolly / Bytel

Hunter Clark I feel will mainly be used as a mid next year
Coffield will either play at half back or rotate off a wing

I fully expect Dunstan is gone and Ross will be lucky to keep his place in the side.
Ryder will naturally be in the team next year but we need to pick up a ruck - Pittonett from Carlton would do , has no contract.

Honestly I think we could play Highmore CHB. Not many sides even play a CHF that is that long range tall.

I said he needs to do a Dunstan, it's possible but he wants to kick on next year or he'll even push his luck with your types. He'll be 5 years in and promise starts to look like Blake Acres after a while. I was his biggest fan boy last year but he's come back a shell of the player he was. Some worrying reports on his attitude as well. I hope he gets a kick up the arse. Acres got 6 years before he was jettisoned, it goes quickly.

Webster not in the reckoning ??

Yeah, at least from the outside his attitude looks like that Acres or Longer or Siposs or Fiora thing of not quite realising what they have to do to fulfil their potential. Might not be true but that's the impression from here. Fingers crossed the penny drops for him.

I’m sorry but I find it weird how people get certain impression (not just you, others as well) about players and how committed/professional they are (need a kick up the butt etc) when we don’t know them, probably never get to a practice and have no insider knowledge. Much like life, players have different personalities and if people judged Dal Santo by the laconic way he played they would think he didn’t give a damn.

Don't agree, he looks like he can't give himself a break at the moment, almost seems to be trying too hard.

The comparisons to Blake Acres are laughable. How many times did Blake finish top 10 in the b and f? He has had a poor season, before that he was tracking beautifully. Maybe there's stuff going on we don't know about, eg injury or fitness issues. But he is hardly tracking badly.

TEAMS: Veterans dumped, Blues' BIG ins, Saints lose five

That AFL site needs to purged of the Saints-hating staff members. How is us losing 5 players the headline when we're bringing in Marshall, Higgins Highmore and Clark? Why isn't it "Saints regain 4 stars"? Pricks.

Oh yeah totally, completely acknowledge that - and whether it's true or not my impression makes zero difference!

That's a damn shame DS, I thought everyone here had all the answers.

Why hasn’t Coffield been given a run on the wing? He would suit Battle’s role much more than Josh himself. Coffield has great overhead marking skills, a penetrating kick, and a fast first few steps to break away in traffic.

Now that we have Highmore as an effective intercept mark, why don’t we leave him there, drop Battle in at CHB, and move Coffield to Battle’s wing role, should the club decide to continue to run with the experiment.

((Im not convinced on Battle as a CHB but he’s our best option and deserves a consistent spot. I would prefer him as a third forward and trade Membrey but that’s off topic and I don’t need that flame))

Probably not fit enough

Improvement is not always linear. Sure some guys dominate and just move straight up. Others take time. Have a good year, then a down year then become great. Look at GAJ it took him 5 seasons to average more then 25 disposals. Toby Green started amazing then had to reinvent himself. Sonny Walters was almost d listed. Jack Steele, Callum Mills, Darcy Moore our own Sincs, BJ , Parish Libba Crisp etc

What a dumb headline from the AFL site. So the story according to them is we're losing five? Anyone with some AFL knowledge would see it as we are "regaining four". Seriously, have a look....
