I'm sorry, but I don't agree at all. You can certainly have someone - Sayers, Liddle - come out and give a statement to the effect of ths:

"We appreciate everything David has given this football club, and we would ask the media to cease their speculation in the interests of doing what is best for Carlton and for David. Some of the speculation - about his position, his job, his person - is consummately unfair, and ultimately degrades those who write it and those who read it.

We ask for patience, and we will be forthcoming at the conclusion of the season when we announce the outcome of our review into our football department."

If they insist on continuing to ask the same questions - "Will you confirm that David Teague has been sacked?" "Is David Teague's job safe?" - you can then go on the attack:

"I am surprised that you would continue to press me in the interests of seeing if you can obtain David's job. He's a better person than that, and I thought you were too."

Turn it around on them. The public don't like AFL media either; they would me more than willing for the club to turn the spotlight back on those doing the questioning. Make them consider their words and the ramifications for continuing to press, and they'll stop pressing.

ODN pretty much answered it for me and in a better world people would show respect (the media) but it wont happen.

We're suckers for the truth and we want to know what's happening and we don't want to wait. Look at us all on here checking to see if there are any updates, has any ITK poster put something juicy up, who will our next coach be.

Are we not the same as those who are publicly questioning or hypothesising or asking for answers? except we're hiding behind the anonymity of a key board.

I agree it's not great but I'd wager a fair portion of us are more concerned with who will take Carlton to the promised land than what hurt it is doing to David Teague or his reputation.

Tells me that Lloyd and Teague both have bad judgement, so both should go.

Fair, but I think I disagree - Footy Boss is there to be a sounding board and make those kind of decisions, the Head Coach is within his rights to make a request like that and should in no way be accountable for appointments (or lack thereof) to the football department.

Cannot believe those whom have replied above have even given that dimma rumour thought. Absolute 🐂💩
99% of rumours on here end up being bovine excrement, and I've put it in that category myself. Just passing on what I've heard as a discussion point.

Don’t know if anyone else has heard this yet but Caroline Wilson was on SA radio earlier today and has said Clarkson’s manager told Collingwood’s Graeme Wright that Alistair Clarkson is not interested in coaching for the magpies
Has been previous talk that he told them no thanks when Bucks was moved on (but Clarko was still in a job), and then reiterated that when they came calling again after his early exit was announced.
Seems Pies were never in the equation.

"While we are in the middle of the review, we will not be commenting on any aspect of the review, including any of our people"
Too simple, you've got to be more specific, and you've got to be able to evade the followup.

How often do clubs proactively come out on the front foot to tell the media to stop speculating? It really doesn't happen.

If anybody at the club has been asked about the situation, they refer to the review and the fact it isn't a coaching review alone, but a whole football department review. They really can't do more than that. They can't say Teague is in trouble, can't say he is safe, can't say he is a good coach and they are happy with him. If they came out proactively to have a go at the media over it, then sacked Teague at the end of it all, the media would smash them.

Several things:

One, the media is already smashing them; by doing it this way, you look strong and reacted with strength, you've defended a Carlton person without guaranteeing their position, and you've prevented the accusation that Teague has been left out to dry.

Two, the idea is that you're not speaking to the media; they're simply an amplifier of what to focus on. If Liddle/Sayers made themselves the story in this way, the focus is off Teague, and off the decision; I daresay, doing this for Carlton and Teague would go a massive, massive way to ensuring that Liddle has a future as a CEO, because it requires serious balls and professionalism to play it this way if you're on your own way out. It sets the tone for the interactions with the media from now on: you can say what you like, and we'll interpret it how we choose. You'd best hope we like how you're talking about us, or we can and will expose you as the carrion birds you are.

Three: the idea is not to get the media to stop speculating, because as you point to it's not going to happen. The point is to talk past the media, to the fans: this is a Carlton person, and we treat each other with respect. Ignore what the media is saying, and we will, too.

Carlton fans would lap that up. As if it wouldn't go down like a 40 year old single malt.

ODN pretty much answered it for me and in a better world people would show respect (the media) but it wont happen.

We choose how we react to this sort of thing, but this is ostensibly not about us. This is about Carlton the board and Carlton the people, what we value and how we treat our own.

We have hung Teague out to dry. We've left him to deal with this alone, and we've done this for the past 4 coaches through the doors.

Are we a football club, or are we a corporation? Are we a group of people who belong, or aren't we? Do we defend our own, or don't we?

The reason why humans form social groups is because we're stronger for it. The group makes us stronger by numbers, imbues us with position and importance, belonging, culture. We are the behaviours we choose to put forth. And I do not like what our behaviours are saying about those in charge.

Our culture - to use that bemoaned term - is above and beyond all else weak.

I've not seen any club that can come out and do much more prior to sacking a coach.

MLG went on the radio and said we were going through a review and as it stands Teague is contracted for next year. What else can be done?

If you come out to defend Teague, then sack him days later, you look far worse than if you said nothing. In fact, you whip the media into a fever pitch. There is absolutely no right way to do this. The media will have their pound of flesh regardless. It's their job.

Which has been said a couple of times in a couple of different ways. Everything else has come from the media, not from the club.

I think the club/the board/the reviewers or whoever you want to blame are doing the right thing overall but are butchering the process of doing it.

They are probably right in that Teagues isn't the man. He decided to keep all assistant coaches so he can't blame lack of support there. The review supposedly spoke to players and other staffers and if all that evidence has come to the conclusion that Teague is out, then just backing him in and hoping for the best is dumb, despite Hardwick and other cases of being backed in paying off. They were kept because the review showed they were good enough and it was the support that was wrong. If the info here is Teague is no good then he needs to go. It's a pretty simple distinction, just because a few coaches being kept paid off doesn't mean they all will. If enough evidence is in that he's not good enough then moving on, albeit quickly, is the right choice.

Conversely, the club has butchered the handling of it. Leaks seemingly everywhere would be devastating for Teague. While the club itself hasn't entertained all this "Ross Lyon confirmed" or "They're big into Clarkson" they have obviously let things slip out the back end which is awful, and given Teagues outbursts they've clearly not communicated well with him either.

Imo the club is doing the right thing but they are handling it like complete amateurs.
I believe Teague will be good enough eventually. I just don't thinks he's there yet. He should have realised that and asked for help. Rather than keeping same assistants. Ask for a senior assistant.

Probably shout have let Barker go when Covid started and kept Henry Playfair.

My question is whether or not we are willing to spend another year or two in the wilderness for Teague to find his feet?

It’s Clarko or Lyon. As I’ve said all along, it’s a huge carrot we’ve dangled in front of Clarko. I can’t see him knocking it back however it’s a genuine chance that he takes a small break from footy. If that’s the case, it’s a matter of formality to sign Ross.

In talks with many different assistants at other clubs too, however they won’t be formalised until the head coach is decided.

As mentioned before Clarko has a child doing year 12 next year. Would he uproot the family to coach GC next season? I dont think so.

Usually would be a fair assessment of the situation, but just to play devil’s advocate - if this year is anything to go by there’s a strong chance a Victorian student will be remote learning, while Qld has had little to no interruption to their normal existence.
Just a thought.

I was down in the dumps when Bolts was gone as I was drawn in by the journey, honestly, I’m so meh with the Teague saga.

Second half of last year and all of this year has been like groundhog day. Beaten the same way over and over again, has absolutely shown Teague was not up to it plain and simple.

Blind and deaf Freddy can see there was no other choice, but the failures of the past 2 rookie coaches at critical junctures in the rebuild has ensured a complete warts and all review of everything football.

I’m going to be as toey as an adolescent chap on his first real date as we get closer to next season starting, the thing is I think the list is in a good spot but there’s a lack of actual evidence it really is. I think I’ll take a long sabbatical if it starts off bad again
