Okay, I'm stuck in lockdown for another 2 weeks (at least) and want some sunshine in my life. The negatives of this season have been done to death in other threads, but what was good about the Eagles in 2021 and what do we have to look forward to in 2022?

Like:
  • Nic getting through a season uninjured and getting better as the year went on.
  • Getting game time into future defence KPPs like Edwards and Rotham - don't care that much that Harry got rag dolled by bigger players, remember the same thing happening to a young Darren Glass.
  • Moderate success of some draftees (Luke Edwards, West) with some potential to build.
  • JK continuing to be a force up forward, one more year on reduced time with more for Allen.
  • Perhaps getting a clear-eyed view of some players who won't be there next year.
What else?

Foley - he looks like a very good defender who is good at both ground level and overhead .
He is sure with ball in hand and neat with his disposal.

Out of the 4 we took in the national draft that year he has come out of the season with higher standing than all of Xon , Williams and Cameron

A few guys debuted / made club debut and looked ok.
Besides that I have very little.

Find it very hard to name anyone who improved this season. Brander, Rotham, Jones and Nelson.... And even that lot is debatable.

Naitanui about the only established player who produced at a high level. Kennedy at a stretch maybe. The rest went backwards, due to form and injury.

No idea why eagles fans disrespect rotham.... clearly a good player and trustworthy. Makes some mistakes as do most defenders, but most of the time makes good decisions, i see massive upside with him, probably another sheppard.

After yesterday we have Nic, Yoe, Shuey, JD, Cripps and Gaff all we need is a committed team around them.
Many unknowns, such as will Allen really be a great FF, but we must get a good mid or two with class and pace, and a KPP player. The draft will not be enough.
Plenty of dead wood dressed up as likable depth with 50 games or so.

Overall we are not fit. Belly fat on many players is a measure to the S&C staff but also on the attitude of players.
I get the impression life is far to happy and contented going through the motions in the Perth bubble for many.
The AFL umpiring has been terrible but we seem to have driven over a black cat.

Not sure how you got that from what I wrote. He improved, maybe not as much as one would have hoped for but he still did at least. From the group I named he was the pick of them.

The guys I didn't name who are in the earlier stages of their career and is where the improvement should be coming from you could say I am showing no respect for! Apologies to Allen, he was poorly managed all year and not entirely his fault he stagnated.

Naitanui the only positive I can think of.

Edwards playing the one huge game I suppose?

A year entirely devoid of hope and things to be proud of. I’m not convinced things will change going into 2022 either.

Very short list from me.

L Edwards
H Edwards
Foley ( Surprised me and proved me wrong, though he was a bust this time last year. )
NN awesome season.

Apart from that season 2021 has been a massive cluster fu(k as far as I am concerned.

Not making finals sux, but it's a good chance to get players into surgery and recovered and ready to go come pre-season. I'd like for the club to avoid the whole "we're going to see if it'll heal itself approach" which rarely seems to work.

A bit of time off for everyone at the club and a chance to take stock, make some big changes then hit the track running and hopefully we can come out of the blocks ready to go round 1.

Debatable rotham has improved ? Disrespectful. Along with other people on here who say way worse

I think the club and the team was over confident and overrates itself. You are really only as good as your last game and every game is a battle to win. For example, you can’t just run out on the ground and beat teams on paper, NM, Collingwood, Fremantle being prime examples. This season has been poor and a reality check. The team and all its supports needs to get a lot better if we are to regain respect and climb back up the ladder and contend. There is enough good stuff to re-emerge fairly quickly but not with the old stale approach and privileged attitude.

The concerning part is where did this arrogance come from? Two 5th place finishes on the ladder and finals exits in a row?

Even in the spoon days I don’t think I ever found myself disliking the organisation as much as I currently do.

The positive for me is the reality check of missing finals. We've known for ages that we need to make changes to gameplan, selection and conditioning but the club kept backing in the old way. I would've thought losing an elimination final last year would have done it, but it seems pretty clear that there's nowhere to hide now they've missed the 8. The shame of finishing 9th must burn too.

We started to see some changes to gameplan over the last two weeks, so clearly they've got the message. I'm excited to see what comes out next year.

If I look back over the season, there's only two games I might watch. 1. Our demolition of Port (the only top 8 team we beat all year) and 2. The Richmond comeback which was so much fun to attend live

Only silver lining for me is that out poor performance should trigger some much needed change in gameplan & strategy. We'd been blinded by being nearly good enough past 2 seasons & fooled into thinking not much needed to change.

A lot of players been carrying injuries this year - hopefully a huge focus on getting fit and healthy. Fitness and strength of the group is a huge area to he improved (and can be)

The games he was dropped was ridiculous.
He got dropped after a 24 possession 84 percent disposal efficiency game against the dogs iirc.

Pathetic.

He is very promising but his quota of three brain fades each game has cost us a couple of close games. Cole steps up in Bne to take his place so he is moving forward.

Jermaine Jones was a positive for me, even though the club drop him every chance they get.
Getting games into some of the kids was also a positive that we've missed in previous years. Foley, HEdwards and Rotham for example.
I also liked what I saw from West, even though he was in no-mans land (guard space) half forward.

Of the experienced players, only Nic and Kennedy impressed me this year and Yeo was great at the end after coming back from injury.

Not too much else for me to be positive about.
