When you're in your 20s and 30s, the world of male leisure can be a bit fraught.

I'm in my 40s now, quite sensible, moderate, restrained, upstanding, handsome in a dignified rather than devilish sort of way. Social scrapes are less frequent, although that incident this time last year when I found myself being flipped off a Sydney street corner and dragged into an ambulance after a big night was somewhat disturbing. The nurses were kind.

But in your 20s, the heat is on almost all the time, and it is almost inevitable that things will boil over from time to time. Some people are good at turning the heat down, but others --like JDG and millions of others-- get 'caught up in the moment'.

No, things are no different now than they were 20-30 years ago, but for some reason we're determined as a society to pretend that they are. It's crap.

Most people are not morons in their 20s who can’t control their immature impulses.

Good to see the intellects out tonight!

J - I've been a professional driver for over 30 years and speeding although a blight is not the major cause of accidents.

Stupidity is - in all it's many guises on the road but it isn't penalized because govts are obsessed with revenue raising through speeding fines.

If we wanna go further on the 'driving and licensing' let's get really serious. Before I dot point all of these inadequacies, note I have my car, rider and HR licences.

  • There is no practical nor theoretical retesting of drivers, get your licence and you're right to go until you give it up. Bad!
  • As far as I'm aware to get your car licence you don't need to be taught of a truck driver or rider and how they are required to meet certain criteria, I know I wasn't 33 years ago. Really really f*n bad!
  • The fact that advanced driver courses are not mandatory. Just as bad if not worse than 2.
  • The lack of stringency in practical and theoretical testing. This is just the very worst!
  • The driver that can't read directional signs because they don't understand them.
Yet the advertising from state and national government reeks of a mantra 'if you do 1 km over the speed limit you'll kill all and sundry' F*kn puhleese!

I'm not excusing the trouble merchants behaviour in his driving antics, but to be honest I feel safer with him on the road than totally uncoordinated newby p plater or the 90 yo who can't see over the steering wheel, or the person who causes accidents but's never in them and is completely unaware they were the cause.

If you wanna look for causes of road deaths that are not noted in the stats, look no further. It's not just sh*tty driving behaviour, like the trouble merchant, which is the bs we're being fed.

If there is one thing that gets my goat it's this issue.

Soz mods for getting off topic.

Apparently if you've played afl you can read the future of people you don't know
Don't even need to have done that. All it takes is an ability to read and more importantly believe every "journalistic" assessment of any issue. Journos and commentators are the new soothsayers didn't ya know?

Yeah I know, would be great if penalties were tougher. Might save a few hundred people a year.
Would it? You already lose your license for 12 months plus 12 months with an interlock and if you fail to comply with that you go to jail. The inference that we are too soft on drink driving and it could save a couple of hundred people are year being tougher is wrong. The TAC says one in five road deaths are down to a driver having a BAC of 0.05 or more leaving the number of those who died as a result of drunk driving last year at 42 and that’s a significant way off your figure. But also sadly the number of the great Darren Millane who became a statistic 30 years ago

Darren Millane had a much greater chance of becoming a fatal accident statistic then than now. Times have significantly changed in terms of deaths on roads, as a variety of factors have combined to reduce the number killed to a mere trickle. Thailand averages 22940 a year, and only the bodies who die at the scene are counted as fatalities. By comparison, I'd suggest that the situation is here well in hand. No need to make an example of someone as it will be simply preaching to the converted.

People are assured they need to feel safe - they are told that throughout their lives now - and one silly act by our resident buffoon is not going to cause his mates or even supporters to climb aboard jets, hire private rooms, drink outrageously priced grog, then kick and punch would-de freeloaders like there's no tomorrow.

By the time De Goey takes the field, he will have been suitably censured by the media and supporters, and it's his on field performances that will determine his character in the eyes of most supporters. Memories can be short and selective and quickly obscured by changing events.

Not sure what relevance the Thai crash statistics are given they are a second world nation with a population 11 times Victoria’s

This is Dermutt retelling his life story through another person.... "De Goey is like me so he is going to leave his original club just like me, under similar circumstances"...

I recall Dermot departed Hawthorn because he was washed up, and I don't think his time at Sydney or us proved Hawthorn's assessment wildly incorrect... or did I miss something..

The relevance is that our (Australia) road fatalities for whatever cause of death are minimal - 1127 last year. I was comparing country to country not country to state. 69m v 27m.

I would think most supporters might have my attitude to footballer's characters.....and I'm not really interested, other than having a passing interest. In fact, I accept that a team needs to have a broad collective personality and borish self absorbed alpha males, which might be what de goey is, are a necessary part of the mix. It was a key ingredient to wayne carey and dermot brereton. The big daddy of them all shane warne is dazzling with his self importance. I think that all of them used their alpha maleness to bolster their own self confidence as well as undermine their opponents confidence and performance. Cockiness if you want to call it that. If de goey lost it, he would lose half his superpowers. I dont know him. I dont live with him. I dont really care much about him other than the kicks he gets, the goals he kicks and the games he wins. His character is not even on my radar...

It’s a harmless opinion mate , is your derision necessary?
Well sorry to brush your over sensitivity nuff.

It was irony and not derision - derision requires a personal element.

Truly nuff I have no issue with your opinion in a personal sense I just think it's enough to make me chuckle in regards to it's likelihood.

I won’t be losing any sleep, I just don’t understand why people on this forum feel the need to mock others for their views. It happens a bit, and makes reading less enjoyable imo.

You might be right, but then again Jordan wouldn’t be the first player to pull his finger out on his last chance (chopsticks anyone?), and being a contract year might be a bigger motivation than anything.

Likely? Maybe not. Do I think it could happen? Absolutely.

Agreed anything can happen and I'm prepared to hold my final judgement in abeyance but his track record in this regard is long and not promising.

My basic thoughts on his upcoming season is that the trust bond between player and club has been fractured - whatever the public statements say - but that both parties will use the season to their best advantage.

Jordan will try to have a ripper season to boost his open market net worth.

The club will decline anything much above a mid level contract and be happy with band 1 compensation.

It sure is. The mobile phone hasn’t helped either. Social media compounded his situation.

Road deaths were 1064 in Victoria going back ~20 years.
We have ~236 deaths in 2021 and ~5x the cars on the road.

Take out the old people with health issues, the drink/drug driving, suicides and there are very, very few road deaths.
Pet hate that we have to drive 40kmh everywhere under the guise of safety with ridiculous penalties for exceeding such modest speed limits.

Oh, we're in a Jordan De Goey thread on Bigfooty. Sorry.
