I must be far more conservative than some here but I’m not seeing the “banging down the door” element. Maybe it’s how we each define it. To me, multiple weeks of stand out performances. The key element consistency at a level. Not sure we’ve seen that from anyone at VFL level yet.

I do agree though, we are seeing some real positives across the entire squad.

I agree re: consistency but team needs and the brilliance of an individual performance are also a factor.

A key-position-forward kicking 4 in the 2s has a different meaning at Collingwood than it does in Geelong.

Callum Brown has arguably been more consistent than Ash Johnson but I'd wager that Ash is more likely to get a game against WC.

With DeGoey out, I think Callum is a certainty. I think they'll pick Johnson too.

Very likely Savvy, unless Bruzzy is given midfield minutes.

With Roughhead a chance to play, they might consider Maynard into the midfield. I'd like to see it. No idea how he'd go, but it'd be interesting.

The needs of the senior 22 will always dictate change ahead of form. JDG missing a week is more likely to open an opportunity for Johnson than Brown. May well be the only change.

I’d prefer to see Maynard perform in defence before we consider shifting him into the midfield.

If Roughy is returning I’d have thought Madge would make way rather than move Maynard from defence.

That's likely. But if we're ever going to try Maynard in the middle, now seems like as good a time as any.

Only player I shit bag is Madgen because he is horrible. Has no pace at all yet is always 15 metres behind his man......
Football is not his natural game. He is a basketball convert. He can’t read it. So, he looks “slow ”. He’s not up to AFL level. All respect to him; however, he needs to be replaced when a better option arrives.
Sad, but factual.

It’s a turn of phrase but Johnson certainly is and reef did last week. Wilson also close to at least consideration

Most kids growing up in the southern states of Australia aren’t just “basketballers” or “footy players” or “cricketers”, they’re just kids and they play a bit of everything. It’s not as though Nick Daicos learnt everything he knows about football between 16-18 years of age in NAB league. They can’t be pigeonholed so neatly.

Imagine growing up playing kick to kick with Peter Daicos! Both boys have learnt plenty from their dad.

50% is not acceptable for a player of his years and talent - it really comes down to fatigue - which is caused by an insufficient tank.

It was the pressure in the game. They also had a run-with on De Goey. Geelong put a lot of attention into him.

Wasn’t particularly having a shot at you, more the general vibe of the discussion, but nah, not really.

Reef was solid with a couple of moments of individual brilliance R1. Certainly wasn’t the 4 quarter performance you’d like to see, and it certainly wasn’t a continuation of anything that stood out preseason so hardly banging down the down.

Johnson was solid through the midfield but virtually invisible as a forward R1. Was very good forward R2. That’s hardly the consistency you’d want and hardly banging down the door.

IMHO Wilson has been the closest to it of those you’re promoting with really strong performances across at least 5 of the 8 quarters played.

Happy to see them promoted if a vacancy arises (McInnes) but a fair way off usurping an incumbent purely on merit.

If you can’t get excited by new blood coming through the ranks then I can’t help you.

yeah, we were just smashed at the contested ball. That was the problem and I think the coaches should have made a move or two. Brown should have been subbed in for Sidebottom too around the time Steele started to labour.

Just on Sidebottom not being subbed - because I too was perplexed…

Under the AFL’s rules:

To be eligible for a medical substitution, the club doctor must decide that an injured player will be unable to play a game in the next 12 days.

So I don’t think this was a coaching decision. Cramp really isn’t something a club doctor could certify would have had Sidebottom out for 12 or more days.

At the end our interchange bench was Sidebottom (12 mins), Noble and Henry (9 mins) and N Daicos (8 mins).

Interchanges were 71/75. So we could have rotated those three as somewhat fresh legs at some point in the last few minutes - maybe after the Cameron goal with 3 mins left.

But I actually think it was a coaching decision not to put the 3 back out there and manage their work loads. It’s a long season. We were unlikely to win once cats went 7 points up.

In hindsight, the Ratugolea injury (like J-Pod in 2011 GF) proved a turning point for the Cats. He’d basically offered the Cats nothing with only 4 possessions.

Delhaus comes on for 23 mins, brings some pace in the front half, has 7 touches, 2 clearances and 4 score involvements.

So yeah, at first I was critical of our strategy not to sub Sidebottom. But having re-read the rules I don’t think our doctor or coaches had any say in it - which really gave Geelong an advantage to run all over us in the last 12 mins

I don't think i've ever seen Sidebottom, one of the fittest runners in the league, cramp before. Geelong has also rested Selwood, one of the toughest bastards in the league, for their clash against Brisbane. I reckon that's a testament to just how tough that game was.
