Thought we put in but you could feel we were up against it from the beginning. Their pressure was very good. Nothing new to anyone but our heavy reliance on scoring from centre clearances isn’t sustainable. Our transition game just isn’t there. Not like the GC game where we were bog ordinary. Just think they were too good.
Love the year Saad is having just quietly. Think he has been consistently good

Cripps immense, the best player in the competition IMO. All of our midfielders were quite good too.

TDK was good, liked Lewis Young forward, actually.

Boyd and Newman disappointing at times, moreso Boyd. Newman had good moments at least, I’m not sure Boyd had any.

Newnes, Parks, Setters all looked below the required level too. Thankfully, O’Brien had a great game in the VFL.

Fisher, Martin and Durdin were pretty disappointing but I’d happily keep them in the side. Starved of opportunities up forward. Plenty of midfield dominance not capitalised on.

Our game plan is far too reliant on Pittonet and we also seem to get stuck kicking long time after time. Really need to adjust how we move the ball. We lack significant speed around the contest and get smashed on the wings. Some really glaring weaknesses.
Disagree about reliance on Pittonet. He played half a quarter and we still won the clearances against a team with two top tier rucks. Setterfield and Young as our back ups. Our mids got plenty of the ball. Pittonet going down, or a tall in general going down meant the deck chairs had to be reshuffled and our structure fell apart. Throw in McKay on one leg and parked in the 50, we lost our aerial dominance. This was even made worse for us because we lost SOS in the lead up.
We played three talls down from our preferred structure. Half our spine

Harry reminds me of Fev at his worst. If things are going his way he just looks disinterested. There are just not enough in the team who have the ability to lift when the game and environment is against them.
I'd have Fisher go before anyone else. I don't know what he brings to the side

Wonder how the Newman apologist can defend that one. Absolute rubbish

1 contested possession
Only 1 intercept
Only 11 pressure acts
Under 300m gained
Multiple turnovers and 'efficient kicks' because only bombed long down the line to contests.

So he's not rebounding, he's not intercepting, he's not tackling, he's not spoiling (low 1 percenters), what the **** is he in the team for.

Cripps, Walsh, Saad, Doc, terrific.
Hewitt, Cerra, Charlie, solid.
TDK, Weitering, serviceable.
Harry, brave given the injury.

Time to swing the axe on,
Newnes, Settlefield, Young, Cottrell, Boyd, Parks.

Need to lift or else,
Williams, Martin, Fisher, Owies, Durdin.

Need to learn how to deal with turnover, both for and against. We struggle to win the ball back off the opposition, and when the opposition win the ball back from us we just can’t stop them.

Having said that, , Gov, Kennedy, Jack, Pittonet, to come back. Harry back to full fitness, and we’ll be ok.

Still think we can win the flag this year.

Firstly, I’m not being overly negative. We’ve clearly improved compared to last year. If you’d asked me at the start of the year if I’d take 4-2 - yes I would have.

There are some larger concerns which have been shown the last 3 weeks which we are yet to see addressed by the players/Voss.

If we don’t win it out of the centre our game falls to pieces. With Pittonet out potentially for a while, this is a major source of concern.
  • we can’t transition from D50 to F50
  • we still have 5 goal run ons against us
  • We still have weak links in our team (Setterfield, Lob, Newnes, Cotrell.

- Williams has been really ordinary the last few weeks
1 our relentless pressure that was evident in Richmond and Bulldogs, I haven’t seen for weeks. Has anyone else noticed that?

I’ve seen enough of Setterfield. He was on 5 disposals at quarter time than got the ball 3 more times for the game. Has zero intensity - just not up to it IMO.

- Clearly we are struggling to replace Jones and put on top we are missing JMac and McGovern. Another key defender must be on our list for the next trade period.

Im not sure if it is a reflex to try and fix the problems of the Teague years, but with weapons like Saad and Williams + Focherty off half back - we should be more dangerous on defensive transition.

At the moment we’ve improved but look like a team that scrapes into the top 8 on the back of a soft draw. Lots and lots of work to do.

We had a terrible bottom 6-8 tonight. Setters too slow and zero presence. Fisher can’t stick a tackle. Don’t see what the coaches see in Boyd, looks a trier but that’s about it. Parks and Young get outmarked too easily (although Young did some good things). Newnes had a mare. Small forwards had little impact. Our two talls were mitigated when the umpires decided blocking and holding was allowed.

Bring in Stocker, Carroll, Kemp next week and hopefully some others returning from injuries.

Scoreboard did flatter Freo in the end but we are far away from being a good side. As usual relying on Cripps to drag us over the line, at least he had some support today with Cerra and Hewett. The next three weeks Roos, Crows and GWS are crucial.

Seems like we haven't developed the part of our game plan for exiting D50 yet. Or generally how to.move the ball forward from general play. Reminiscent of last year where we win the ball in the contest and then kick it back to them. Seems like we were reluctant to chip the ball forward and couldn't respond tactically to freos side handball to runners beside the man with the ball.

Reality Bites. Freo are the real deal
Austin has to emerge from SoS' shadow and draft some outside skill.
Young and Boyd are Rubbish
Newnes, Cottrell, Parkes, Setterfield, Newman are not Afl, their effort does not compensate for sub par skills putting our good players under pressure.
Voss needs to understand Stocker, Kemp and probably Carrol are just better footballers than the hacks listed above.
Voss should sacrifice a Cerra or Walsh on a wing to give us structure and stop the turnover rot
Freo are 7-12 on reality. We are 8-15 in reality

Our bottom six tonight and I’m being generous on a few.

Durdin
Owies
Fisher
Cottrell
Setterfield
Newens
Inj: Piito

To come in.

Gov
M’mac
Honey
Silvagni
Kennedy
Carroll
Motlop
Stocker

Can’t wait to see some on the above in the team and some out. It is what it is, we can just never get a good run at it personal wise…

Some serious issues in certain parts of the ground, as we all know, some with potential solutions:

- Small forwards/HFFs in Fisher, Durdin and Owies just far too weak on the ball, slow and inconsistent -> Honey on the verge of returning through the VFL, Motlop a chance to be selected in coming weeks, no short-term solutions

- Outside mids/wings in Setterfield, Cottrell and Newnes getting carved up by quicker and better opposition players -> no real solution here either, Carroll is worth a shot but will require further development, Cuningham is our best player here but is still 2 months away from AFL

- Parks offering no intercepting in his role -> McGovern and Marchbank, our preferred options, simply always injured

So, when you say potential you mean I need to wait until round 15?

Ill say it again. Gives us nothing that Docherty, Saad and Williams don't give already.

As opposed to him being an out each week by the same supporters?

He will play next week

They’re going to need to do a whole lot better than what we’ve seen lately to have any business at the serious end of the season.

Still, I feel there’s a bit that can be done to get better when the all important second half of the season begins.

Some players should probably not be out there anymore unless we have literally nobody else available. Newnes has shown too many times his best is very limited, and his worst is below AFL grade. Time to shovel him into the VFL then retirement. Whoever allows his selection needs to answer some questions as to why.

Not much again from the Durdin and Owies combination. This really was the chance to give Motlop a go. He couldn’t have done worse than say, Durdin.

Boyd is a limited footballer but a few others can look at his energy and second efforts and take note. I don’t think he’s up to the level required but you can’t say he doesn’t give 100%.

TDK was needing a ventilator by the last quarter hats off to him never gave up and did okay.

So I think we are seeing we are in the fight for 6-8th with about the same number of teams. If we give it up to North then some serious soul searching needed.

Freo are decent with a good structure defensively and some great ball users for the counter attack. They addressed their bombing it to nobody in the first quarter and lowered the eyes for the HFF kick and then on to the 35-50 metres out player. We continued to just hit and hope. Why? That just plays perfectly to Freo’s game. Who is not telling them to find another route? Madness.

Umpires are their usual maggoty selves (especially umpire 16) but ultimately didn’t determine the result.

Let’s see how they respond for next week. More than a few sore and sorry bodies after tonight.

Setterfield and Fisher really poor once again. Neither good enough and just seem to get chance after chance.

Thought Harry was bordering on pathetic actually (but will give him benefit of doubt).

Enjoyed De Koning’s game. Young gave us something forward. Saad fantastic. Mids good overall.

Was a weird game, we were okay in most areas but fell down structurally.

The small forwards are giving us absolutely nothing.

Oh well, on to next week.
Im keen to know what you enjoyed about De Koning game.

I was all set for a cracker of a game for a Saturday night and we just didn't show up at all.

Cripps, Saad, Doc were very good. Thought Cerra was ok but not damaging enough.

Unfortunately Setters & Fisher need a spell. Not good enough.

Boyd has been thrown to the lions for his first few games so he gets a pass from me. Atleast you can see the effort from him.

Would have like to see changes made earlier. Maybe Young into the ruck, Charlie down back.
