Feel there’s a recency bias against Williams that’s got everyone up in arms. He turned it over late trying take the play on to win the game.

He wasn’t one of our worst, he just wasn’t very good.
The issue is he had one good game in 2018, playing midfield and has been a failure. This guy isnt on 100k a year, he is in the top paid players at the club, and thats they way he plays week in week out. When the pressure is on, Williams aint the guy whose saving you, when we lose he is a big part of it. Front runner and over paid big time

You're not wrong about not having enough run, but I'm not even sure that was our problem tonight. Aside from our various defensive woes:

  • Just like the pre-Voss 21st century Carlton, too many players got sucked into too many contests (including marking contests) - run is irrelevant if everyone's wrestling for a ball that spills to a Freo player waiting outside with multiple offloading options
  • On that note, the players continue to make every effort to dispose of a ball at all costs instead of playing for a stoppage, resulting in it inevitably spilling out to those outside opposition players. Walsh frustratingly looks to do this every time he gets wrapped up
  • We burnt short options for every single kick in and probably just about every other kick in our back half in favour of carbon copy kicks down the line or blind up and unders. When players did lower their eyes a bit it was 50/50 whether it was a direct pass or a floater that would give Freo a chance to spoil. Get you someone who looks at you the way Newman looks at an outnumbered contest 50 metres away on the boundary line
  • Atrocious i50s - the good ol Carlton way of kicking them in high and not particularly long was in full force tonight
  • Just seemingly never, ever trying to stop the opposition from tackling/spoiling your nearby teammate - has been mentioned so many times but the lack of any real shepherding is just ignoring the basics at this point. If Voss has these much-vaunted ratings for teamwork, surely most players aren't ticking this box
First point grinds my gears like no tomorrow... Someone stay front and centre ffs.

I'd also like to add - does any other team in the AFL allow the opposition to exit/transition from a kick in as bad and as easily as we do?

Disappointed that Voss didn't break any phones...

Bring Saad and Williams up onto the wings. Plowman and Stocker to the back line.

Add Kennedy, Silvagni, Carroll & Dow as mid/fwds and we are a significantly better side.

They seem to have made commitments to a few pre-season that they’d get a run of 5-6 games to build their confidence. We need to give others their chance.

Hopefully McGovern not too far away either.

Great thought re re-inventing the wings.

Clearly the current group just aren't good enough.

Docherty looks to have his zip back and is offering plenty up the ground. Williams was suspect today.

Think we're pretty much forced to change things up. I'd prioritise Docherty onto a wing. And then Williams on the other. Prefer to keep Saad in defence as he is saving numerous goals weekly.

Stocker simply must come in. Parks is in all sorts and I'd prefer Plowman who has some knowledge of AFL defensive systems.

Stocker Young Plowman
Saad Weitering Newman/Williamson

With Docherty and Williams playing on the wings.

Then when healthy:

Stocker Young Plowman
Saad Weitering McGovern

That's a pretty reasonable defence, notwithstanding Marchbank remaining in one piece after a few weeks in the VFL.

He’s a good player, just had a bad night - not worth what he is allegedly paid, sure but he certainly isn’t bad.

Elite for Rebound 50’s
Above Average for Disposals, MG (505 per match!!), Intercept Possessions and 1-on-1 wins. Goes at nearly 80% DE too.

He’s a bloody good player. Genuinely not far off Bailey Dale (the gold standard IMO) as far as statistics go.

I think you’re cherry picking. First of all average is exactly that average. But he is elite at contested possessions, intercept possessions and ground ball gets and above average tackles, pressure acts and 1-1s. So again I think he is having a pretty decent year.
What stats are you looking at,average rebound 50, effective kicks, effeciency, and Contested defence lose of 40%, compared to AFL average of defenders between 20 and 30% Williams is at 44.4%, so that is up there with him

Saad defencise losses is up there at 40% he might be saving a few goals but hes giving up a few too many as well. William not fit enough to be on wing, let along in the team. Id put saad on wing, Stocker in backline and plowman and williams medi sub

Pitto might be a corkie. Fingers crossed. If it is he will probably still miss next week.

Without the forward handball at centre clearances our entries are very shallow and we get torched on the rebound. When we are running hot our entries are deeper and we have been able to lock it in.

Need a stronger presence off the back of the square and our wingers to become options. Setters and Newnes offered nothing.

Agree - we need more creativity and better link up through the wings.

They might be providing something defensively but 10 or so possessions isn’t enough.

I just remembered it’s setters 50th and he served up that pile of crap!
Such a disappointment.

Pitto out hurt us. They have two bonafide rucks. As soon as he went down we were doomed.
TDK to his credit did well.
Crippa, Walsh are out and out superstars
Boyd must have nice photos of some of the coaching staff, I can’t figure out why else he keeps getting games.
I tend to agree that TDK battled on much better than I thought, didn’t advantage us but didn’t stink like a couple of weeks ago

I thought it was one of his best games kicks and hand balls where good took some marks didn’t win but broke even in the ruck
Pitto doesn’t jump as high but follows up like Kruzer blasts a path for the mids to feed of
Dekoning needs to learn to follow through after his leap and take some oppo mids out
