Was always going to be tough when we lost Silvagni before we began.
We lost Pittonet, Harry on one leg and let’s be honest, the Dockers were hungry.
Not Boyd’s fault but I don’t get him as a sub. He’s just a trier and a decent grunt.
I’d rather stocker, kemp. Williamson, Carroll etc. just don’t get it.
Tough day at the office!
Walk away and hope the injuries are not that serious!
The eighth defender again, bafflingly?????????????????

Teams not allowing us to exit out the front of a stoppage nearly as much or as easy as we were when we had our best patches of play earlier in the season.

More posession back and sideways reducing our effective entries.

Could be wrong but it definitely feels that way.

Partly due to our mids needing to read the opposition ruckman instead of Pitt.

It is no coincidence we look poor when he isn’t at the contest. So important and I wouldn’t have said that 12 months ago.

Disposal poor, below average fell away, defensive loses is the highest they have been ever been so he is being targeted, and impact on scroeboard non exsistent. Hes not giving us great value
I guess it shows we all see it differently but I 100% do not get this. He has 23 and went at 87% Disposal efficiency. People say they don’t trust his disposal but want him up on the wing? Anyway, different views I guess

Our game plan is far too reliant on Pittonet and we also seem to get stuck kicking long time after time. Really need to adjust how we move the ball. We lack significant speed around the contest and get smashed on the wings. Some really glaring weaknesses.
Bang
That’s only the start of it…
Been worked right out…
Load of players that aren’t up to it…

I’ve seen two people suggest Williams to the wing. craaazy

Wing is about fitness and gut running.
Williams output doesn’t match his salary. I’d rather we keep newnes on the wing than Williams (shudder). Yuck
Going Crazy Will Ferrell GIF
No id rather williams be traded to anyone

I don't think we played particularly poorly, they were just better than us.

The scoreline flattered us, if anything.

If Freo were any good at converting I50s into scores, it would have been uglier.

The sample size is big enough now to be a trend. It’s clear as day that we lack outside run. I could take pot shots at certain players who just aren’t up to it but that’s the reality.. there’s a handful of players who try hard but don’t have the skills, decision making, or leg speed to be effective at AFL level. We badly need to address this over the next couple of off-seasons.

It’s not all doom and gloom though because we clearly have a lot of pieces which other clubs would be envious off. We have a very solid midfield. We have power forwards. We have an All-Australian caliber key defender. We need to build around these guys with the correct pieces.

This season is all about learning the new game plan and seeing which players have the ability to carry it out successfully. What has been evident though is we allow the opposition to hit up the short kick far too often (even when they haven’t moved the ball quickly). This is an absolute pet peeve because it just allows the opposition the chance to drain any momentum we may generate but also allows them to chip it down the field until they can launch an inside 50. Inside 50’s should be earned but we give them up far too easily. Not a sustainable brand of footy. I’m not sure if this occurs because we are so worried about our defence that we try to get numbers back, if we lack genuine footy IQ and instincts, or whether it’s a lack of leg speed on the outside.

Anyways, Fremantle far too good tonight and further highlighted the weaknesses on our list. Good luck to them, they’re building nicely and outplayed us immensely. They have the outside run but no gun key forwards. We have the key forwards but no outside run. Both flawed teams until that can be addressed.

Big ups to our skipper though. Lionhearted effort. Hewett also cracked in all game. Saad tried to bring some dash at times. Those were our best three for mine.
You're not wrong about not having enough run, but I'm not even sure that was our problem tonight. Aside from our various defensive woes:

  • Just like the pre-Voss 21st century Carlton, too many players got sucked into too many contests (including marking contests) - run is irrelevant if everyone's wrestling for a ball that spills to a Freo player waiting outside with multiple offloading options
  • On that note, the players continue to make every effort to dispose of a ball at all costs instead of playing for a stoppage, resulting in it inevitably spilling out to those outside opposition players. Walsh frustratingly looks to do this every time he gets wrapped up
  • We burnt short options for every single kick in and probably just about every other kick in our back half in favour of carbon copy kicks down the line or blind up and unders. When players did lower their eyes a bit it was 50/50 whether it was a direct pass or a floater that would give Freo a chance to spoil. Get you someone who looks at you the way Newman looks at an outnumbered contest 50 metres away on the boundary line
  • Atrocious i50s - the good ol Carlton way of kicking them in high and not particularly long was in full force tonight
  • Just seemingly never, ever trying to stop the opposition from tackling/spoiling your nearby teammate - has been mentioned so many times but the lack of any real shepherding is just ignoring the basics at this point. If Voss has these much-vaunted ratings for teamwork, surely most players aren't ticking this box

Overall AFL stats dont lie, click his name and check a few of his stats 74.9% average, scoreboard impact average to below, compared to when he was at Essendon it was higher. So impact at Carlton less. 40% 1 on 1 defence losses huge compared to previous years

Completely agree that his importance has been magnified. Also think teams might be going with a more defensive setup to negate that advantage we were getting.
Interested to see if we can regain that stoppage advantage when/if Pitto is on the ground in the next few weeks.

Partly due to our mids needing to read the opposition ruckman instead of Pitt.

Maybe the issue, is Pre Voss and Current Voss, too many players not at the standard of AFL level. Time to change. My concern is Voss is going to be like in teh Brisbane days one dimensional very few changes. Chnage one Saaad wing, change 2 Williams dropped. Cant keep blaming guys who everyone knows arent up to it, they arent on 600k a year like Williasm seriously.

First game I have seen live this year, gives me a different perspective

Mids were good with limited service

Setterfield is not trying or injured - is Carroll worth a chance

For all the half bank flankers we have - you need to run and create, would much prefer we get caught every now and then trying something rather then bombing long every time

Oh and when we switch - if the long switch is on then take the kick, a short option just gives them time to close it down

We need Stocker in to create some run and carry

Weiters - love the courage but take a mark every now and then young fellow

We need JackSOS back - Harry and Charlie need someone smart to create space for them on leads (too often being shepherded out of contests)

Was it just me seeing it but our forwards were often spoiled with a defender jumping into them with no eyes on the ball???
If the umps want respect then do your job ya peanuts

Oh yeah - we need Pittonet back

I must say forward of centre we seemed to lower our eyes a bit more then recent weeks

We also seemed to defend the corridor better this week

Surprised how one sided the incorrect disposal calls were - maybe the umps were unsighted - maybe I was just caught up in the game, if not then our boys need to work on getting the arms free and not commit so many to tackles as they aren’t paying many
We need Stocker for his kicking to those that run and carry

Our injuries are killing our structures with key outs across the field. Hopefully with some players back next week and over the next few weeks, we see big improvements.

Our forward 50 entries continue to be a concern, fingers crossed the axe is swung again and some better ball users come in.

Don't know what's happening with these extended periods of play where we get smashed. Pitto going down tonight and against Gold Coast really hurt us but we keep having long patches of playing horrible footy. Struggling to see how Voss and co fix this.

I think you’re cherry picking. First of all average is exactly that average. But he is elite at contested possessions, intercept possessions and ground ball gets and above average tackles, pressure acts and 1-1s. So again I think he is having a pretty decent year.
