Why is it harsh? Somebody has to be the last player on the list, who is it if it isn't Chugg? He's shown barely anything at VFL level. He didn't struggle with the change of pace, he's never even gotten used to the pace at VFL level.

And I can assure if you he managed to somehow connect his foot with a ball and kick a goal, the outlook wouldn't be any different.

Not sure why die hard, rose eyed supporters think every player is great and has to make it and to say anything against them is blasphemy. Huge percentage of players don't make the cut; Chugg's going to be a part of that number I guarantee it.

There is a scale between “last player on the list” and “Great” / “has to make it”.

I’m not suggesting either extreme.

If we had cut every player who had a first game that bad, we wouldn’t have half of our list.

Take Oliver Henry for example, his first game was terrible. (Stats say 4 kicks, 1 mark, no handballs, no tackles, no score, but I was at that game and those stats flattered him). But we’ve persisted and he’s coming good.

5 touches at 20% disposal efficiency.

Fair to say the match committee has had a few shockers this year. Every man and his dog knew he is not AFL quality.
Barely VFL quality , no point having pace and aggression if you can’t find the ball and below par kicking skills .

Yeah he certainly brought the heat today. No way Poulter, Macrae, Ruscoe, Draper, Murley etc could've brought that level of intensity.

He was literally too scared to call for the ball...
11 Pressure acts from 50% game time as a forward is good - its pretty clear that's why we picked him. We've got no depth and it was him or the Browns who would have given us that - the others wouldn't - unless Carmichael understands the plan already.

Harsh.

Yeah, he clearly struggled with the change of pace, but I reckon any first game small forward would have today.

If his foot had connected with that ball going across goal early in the last, we’d be singing his praises and calling him out to be a 150 game player.
Small forward , 3 goals in 20 vfl games , paaaaleeeease .

I think if the whole thing had of happened a week later, and you'd seen his 2 performances in the VFL, Carmichael would have got the call up.

Difference is Henry showed at VFL level he was gonna be a star.

Chugg has shown the exact opposite at VFL level, and constantly butchers the ball even there.

You always know when a person doesn't watch much VFL when you get comments like that. So, if Chugg isn't VFL level, then it doesn't say much for the blokes who weren't chosen ahead of him. Maybe your eyes aren't as good as the Coaches and selectors, have you ever considered that?

No he didn’t.

He debuted in the seniors round 1 after he was drafted (after which he was promptly dropped to the VFL)

I have to assume 76 hasn’t seen him at that level so can’t comment. Given Chugg’s struggles at VFL level criticism needs to be saved for the match committee. If it was a needle for some of our younger guys to perhaps lift their defensive rating at the lower level then I’ll cop it as a once off. Integrity of selection needs to be maintained and that’s not the standard.

Yeah, he struggled a bit with the higher level, no doubt. But he definitely brought some heat with tackles and pressure, which clearly seems to have been his role.

Good try, young fella. Hope you remember that feeling of an AFL win forever, and you played your small part.

For those of you with kids,

My son loved it as a toddler.

He got to take a few selfies with the crowd and got showered with Poweraide, ggod on him, I think he has a bit offer with another pre season

Yeah look, Chugg was an outside chance of getting selected in the 2020 draft and for him to get a game at the pies is a massive achievement that he'll remember for the rest of his life.

That said, at this current point he's simply not up to it and needs to head back to the VFL.

I remember at the start of 2020 he wasn't good enough for the Launceston Football Club firsts, was dropped at the start of the TSL year, then didn't really set it on fire either when he came back. Was surprised he was drafted, and has done well to get a game :thumbsu:

He’s not wrong here though, Chugg finds little of the ball despite’s playing through the middle at VFL level and butchers it when he has it.

In fairness Chugg has played little pressure forward at VFL level… he’s been mostly defence and then midfield

If they insist on keeping him… pressure forward is the only place I can see him

Could’ve had a goal yesterday. Just play him there at VFL level for the rest of the year

Throwing them around too much doesn’t help

Must be a heck of a nice guy and probably is, I just don't see it with him in terms of ability, never really have. Harsh on the kid I know, but just calling it as I see it, and I don't see him making it, was astonished he got picked.

As always, will be as happy as anyone if he proves me wrong and good luck to him.

I've read a bit about Chuggy and his attributes of being strong and quick, and I just dont see it, average (in the true sense of the world), at both. One thing I can say in his favour is that he has a crack and his intensity, 2nd efforts etc are very good. Its the only possible explanation for picking him in front of more talented kids like Macrae and Poulter who are much more casual in their play...
