Yeah the GWS and Carlton games were quite good but they need to be the standard if he's going to be a full time midfielder

Despite how he's played I'd still drop him if we thought Lyons and/or Zorko could get back to their 2021 form
Yeah I agree with that however on this years form I’d play him ahead of Lyons at this stage.

Matho has become overrated very quickly. Funny reaction
I don't think too many are overrating him.

All I was saying is that he's a lot better than I thought he would be. Which means like many others I underrated him. And he's added a bit of energy and excitement on occasions to the team.

Whether he can continue to improve and provide a bankable contest against better opposition we shall see.

But the reaction from some around here means that he's going to attract more scrutiny than lots of others who generally get a free pass which I guess is the cross he has to bear.

It's interesting that those who continually marked down Matho as AFL level seem to have doubled down that he's not what we want and won't last. Ironically as he's gotten better.

The same logic that still brands Keays as not much of a player.

I've got to be honest I never rated Matho for all the reasons that people still say they don't rate him. But there's come a time for me to admit that he really has added energy and a bit of excitement to the team and he's a lot better player than ever I thought he would be. He has one or two moments a game where his raw energy excites the group.

The interesting thing to add is that his inside handballs have improved out of sight and he's doing things I never thought him capable of.

OK ,he'll never be a champ , he's got deficiencies ,but he's worked very hard on the abilities he does have and gives it his all. So kudos to him for sticking at it and adding something to the team.
Every great team needs role players and I think Matho going forward is going to be an important one. You don't need every midfielder to be an out and out star.

Usually role players compliment the stars but our midfield stars play a similar role at the moment which is why we've struggled to give him games

From the sounds of it though, they are looking at giving him a different more defensive role which could compliment Neale.

^^^ Matho fans/stans finally enjoying some time in the spotlight.

PS: I am a Matho fan. We talk about a team of champions and needing those role players to elevate others. Matho fits that mould. If he can stick a tackle, lay a block and get a handball out I am more than happy with his output. It means we get someone who can sacrifice their game to get Neale off a tag. It means Suitcase can be first reciever and use his evasiveness and foot skills to get fantastic kicks out. It also means we can move Berry out of the middle where I think he is more damaging as that winger type. JL was doing this role perfectly until this year where it seems age is catching up to him. So having Matho has helped JL share that burden. Whats more, we get this output without paying out the arse for a Hopper type to do the exact same thing. I think Matho is doing for us what Brodie has done for Freo (on much larger coin as well).

If you want a good Tuesday morning vibe, go and watch from 5 minutes left in the 4th when we pulled our finger back out. Had clearly put the cue in the rack on reflection and we literally scored at will when we had to.

I'm still skeptical that we can carry Matho and Lyons in our team long term, I feel like for our team that is a serious contender at the pointy end probably only has one of those guys in the best 22.

I am worried about Lyons' drop off this season, especially that he's down from 80% TOG last year to 75% TOG, yet still looks like he's struggling to cover the ground required both ways. His GPS stats would be interesting, but I suspect they've dropped off a fair bit.

I don’t know what more people want Matho to do.

Had 24 touches, 11 contested @ 75% DE. Had 8 score involvements and kicked one himself. Spent a 97/129 minutes on the ground, had 5 clearances himself. 59% defensive half and 41% offensive half so he’s clearly running two ways.

The bloke has earned his spot and is pretty bloody good.

Yeah his game on the weekend was good but that's where he needs to be at. Probably 3 out of 4 games need to be at least this good

One of the better things Jason Baldwin did in a Fitzroy jumper.
An old acquaintance I know who played at Fitzroy - he said Jason was also bloody good at turning up Sunday morning (for memory) after a huge night out and training the house down haha.

What???? Where are the 10 Votes for the inspirational leadership and putting his body on the line for his team of the young captain-sniper?

Since his inclusion his stats have been pretty similar every week.

I just don’t understand the Matho bashing, he is a long way past his first couple of seasons.

Despite Matho having a rep for "hack kicks", they are penetrating and cover atleast 40m of territory. Sometimes you can be too tricky for your own good, eg Neale in the last quarter going for the impossible kick. We play a territory game and when everyone is pressuring at 100%, matho's penetrating hack kicks are a thing of beauty.

Matho bashing is not on this board. In fact, I think everyone here is pleased with his inclusion and pleased with his performance once he came into the team.
In saying that, he needs to keep it up and continue on with this form to become a regular in the 22.

No they are not and one of the reasons he hasn't played more senior footy in the past.

That speaks volumes as to why he's not considered best 22 on a regular basis at this time.
In the context of of the post he was replying to he might have meant that both of them have issues being overrated by some posters when they do something good? ;)

Hack kicks generally end up in a 50/50 contested possession/stoppage. Unfortunately 50/50 is not a good statistic. If you hack kick, it normally means you have not looked for a handball out or tried to clear congestion by foot. Both should be a first options. Many players throughout the league who were hack kickers (Neale, Oliver, Merritt) have all realized this is rubbish football option.

Got to admit I wasn't a fan of Mathos return but I've got egg on my face. Having said that he still has the problem of desperation. Yes, it's great when you don't have the ball but it's a curse when you have the pill. That transition is where Matho is still a problem. He plays with good desperation when he doesn't have it and plays with the same desperation when he has it. Hence the throw it onto the boot as soon as possible once you get it.

So on Sunday matho disposal efficiency 75%.

Lachie Neale, in Brownlow contention, had 71%.

And no, I'M AN NOT SAYING matho is better than Lachie, but it does show that the role you play impacts on DE.
