Got to admit I wasn't a fan of Mathos return but I've got egg on my face. Having said that he still has the problem of desperation. Yes, it's great when you don't have the ball but it's a curse when you have the pill. That transition is where Matho is still a problem. He plays with good desperation when he doesn't have it and plays with the same desperation when he has it. Hence the throw it onto the boot as soon as possible once you get it.

Would I be right in saying that desperation takes away his ability to find the space (or someone who is in it) like Neale and elites mids are able to, even in congestion? Sam Mitchell always looked like he had oodles of time despite not being very quick, even when he was at the Eagles and I think that must have been because he always knew where the space was going to be.

So on Sunday matho disposal efficiency 75%.

Lachie Neale, in Brownlow contention, had 71%.

And no, I'M AN NOT SAYING matho is better than Lachie, but it does show that the role you play impacts on DE.

I was impressed with Mathos handballs.......also Lachie did make a few blunders

Yeah his game on the weekend was good but that's where he needs to be at. Probably 3 out of 4 games need to be at least this good

some others been going 1 good 2 avg and 1 bad and still be in the team

A 40m+ kick to a 50/50 contest is considered effective, so DE% doesn't necessarily always punish players who blindly throw it on their boot.

Like you said, DE% has variables.

He's always been a shoulder lifter / ducker and now he has added the Bulldogs throw to his game. Everytime he does it I expect him to get pinged (because we aren't a big Vic team) but they will probably save that for the finals when it really counts. Bailey also got away with a two handed set from the middle of congestion.

The state of umpiring around throws / incorrect disposal / dropping the ball has to be at an all time low.

My only observation after watching many games across many teams this season is that if you're in a situation where your team is going to be advantaged by throwing it and you can't get the same outcome by trying to handball it ,just throw it.

How many throws are picked up in a game ? My gut feel is around 15% but it could be lower.

The massive leg up you have in this era is that you just have to look like you tried to handball it if the throw is going to be too blatant in front of the ump. Even then if your team has the jets on the umps are too mesmerized to recognise it.

He did quite a lot of two way running yesterday.

Players often get unfairly pigeonholed as too slow or unskillful or only able to play one position or whatever.

Matho has been great and has dispelled a lot of false narratives and group think about his supposed deficiencies

Matho had deficiencies. It's why he spent a lot of time in the twos.

There he would have feedback on what he needs to improve to earn a seniors spot. And a development programme about getting him there. By all accounts he's been very diligent about following that programme and that's why he's an improved player now playing seniors. Probably should have been included a couple weeks earlier, but nonetheless. He'll continue to have a programme to improve further and hold his spot.

Had the club thought he couldn't/wouldn't make that improvement, he wouldn't have gotten a contract renewal. But they figured him a chance, backed him in and he's been following through.

I don't really rate the "cards marked" sort of thinking we tend to do here. If they're playing twos, well, maybe they're useful depth and a leader for the reverses (i.e. Lester) but, more likely, they've got a development programme they need to follow to make them a best 22 player.

I was at the Giants game and what was noticeable was how good was Matho at tackling. Last match he continually brought players down with his attack tackling.

He has added a hard edge to our midfield. Players he tackles don't break away and none get up feeling we are a walk in the park.

I wish Lyons would do the same.

That actually used to be a really strong feature of Lyons game and I feel has potentially been his biggest drop off this year.

I have a memory of Simon Black getting called for a throw when he was half on the ground/half diving out of a tackle, and he was irritated at the ump. Replay.. and sure enough was a good handball.

When you see some of the throws these days it makes me think back to that. Semi-throwing is semi-allowable it seems, but just annoys me A pet peeve sure, but oh well. A nicely executed handball is so great.

I think their used to be financial penalties if any appeal failed (Tribunal or AFL Appeal board) but not sure that is the case anymore
Can the appeals board increase the penalty? as i assume Carlton are not going for the bolded
...

However, clubs have the option of contesting a Tribunal decision at the Appeals Board so long as they meet one of four stipulations:

• Error of law
• That the decision was so unreasonable that no Tribunal acting reasonably could have come to the decision having regard to the evidence before it.
• Classification of offence manifestly excessive or inadequate.
• Sanction imposed manifestly excessive or inadequate.
