Long term development needs: quick outside mid, quick rebounding defender, key forward
Fisher just signed a 3 year contract.

We get it, you don't rate Fisher, Newman, Pitt or Kennedy.

Owies had the advantage of being a CatB rookie. So he was outside the normal playing list. Something of a free hit.

He loses that next year.

Yeah I realise that, but with rumours going around of Owies receiving a new 2 year contract going forward I just don’t see the upside that Cahill has.
I see Cahill being much more dangerous option at Charlie and Harry’s feet or hitting a target with the last kick inside 50.

Cripps really had a special year that I wanna acknowledge. I know we all know this but he’s arguably had his best year.

Very similar to 2019 started off like a house on fire and a down patch in the middle of the year then came home strong.

Just did a predictor and I reckon he comes 3rd in the Brownlow on 27 votes. Annoyingly had neale winning, I reckon that bloke is so easily tagged I don’t get why teams don’t do it every week.
I presume most good teams leave it until finals so he doesn't get used to it, to ensure they go out in straight sets as usual.

I’m intrigued by your handle. You do know who Michel Foucault was don’t you? If so, as he died in 1984 you should change the year in your name, to 1984,as a mark of respect!

Jim you lose credibility when you say Marchbank DOES have the ability to run back but Doc doesn’t.

There isn’t a distance or run event that Marchy would beat Doc in. 5m sprint. 10m. 20m. 100m. 400m. 800m. 2km. Repeat sprints.

I mean maybe steeplechase.

All poking fun aside….

I’m happy with Williams, Boyd, Saad, Newman, McGovern providing run and kicking from the backline. If any are injured I’d rather we played Stocker (he will be much better off a full preseason) than Wilson. I’d also be happy to see Carroll played down back- if you want a radical idea- because I think his chances of getting a run on ball are low right now.

Maybe I’m missing something but I look at videos of Scholl and can’t see that Carroll can’t be that same silky player.

Personally I would hang on to Dow, but people willing to trade 3 players that are likely to remain best 22 is truly bizarre

People also need to forget where a player was drafted, once they walk into the club, it's all about output
i agree, might as well see Dow out.....its been a long road with Dow....astonishingly he was played a lot early with a weak list, and it wasnt ideal the entire approach......anyway cannot duck and weak and make excuses
Still puzzled with Dow........he has the goods on board, just needs to hit the on button

let us pray for a miracle

Sholl can and has clocked 17+km in a game.

Carroll was slowing down after a couple of games.

Love Carroll but I'd be developing him for the midfield where his composure in traffic can be used to full effect. Look to fill the wing positions with guys who can run all day and reliably chisel an inboard pass.

You are right about there being other mids we could have taken in both drafts, but that would be pointless to speculate on because we can all say "what if" Thats really not my point. My point is more that if you are hell bent on solving a problem no matter what, that often that constricts your thinking about who are the best players. Becoming obsessed with a particular "type" does this.
I used 2 examples in our past to illustrate this. It seems to me that it was repeated with dow and sps.

Compare and contrast SOS's first draft with us- where he had complete freedom to pick the very best players, simply because we had holes to fill everywhere. IMO he completely owned that draft.
Then the following year , having gone all in on KPP, the commentary became louder that we needed more mids because malthouses observation from a few years before was becoming even more obvious. This became even more urgent given we had not addressed it the year before.

Nick Austin has the benefit now, where we have plenty of good players. He can afford to go to the draft and pick the best available
Great post; the same point I've been trying to make only put more coherently. We do a lot better with less pressure to nail the picks, particularly with the added pressure that there will be a spot open in the senior side immediately, if they are ready.

But not nearly as good defensively which apparently is a non negotiable …
How many tackles did Cahill lay today?

Bruest, Cahill and Crocker are all small-mid forwards, Kemp is a 3rd tall/KPP.
We have enough small forwards. We don’t need any more. Besides 2 aren’t any good.
I’d be bitterly disappointed with us, if we wasted our energy and trade period chasing another small forward.
IMO we need to keep developing Motlop. Durdin and Owies wth Martin our no.1 man.
If anything, we need to get some outside midfield run and young KP forwards to develop. That should be the focus.

1 more dynamic forward, but that could come from within

I think our trade period will be quite simple this year.
Jones compo pick and Dows pick = McAsey and Acres
Plus add a ruckman either Goldstein or Ryder.

But Personally I'll like to see us bring in a younger ruckman Bryan or Briggs.
Plus some more young talent either Bergman, Gould, Bruhn or T. Berry.
I'm also a fan of Frampton would add some depth in talls.

Honey and Motlop are the best bets to become true small forwards at afl level

Acres won’t be traded for 3rd rounder he’s valued at least a mid to late 2nd rounder. He’ll become un contracted FA , let him sniff around, nominate a club or enter PSD.

Agree with you, that’s it in a nutshell.
