Agree 100%. What about Owies v Melbourne? Durdin? Charlie?
A collective of failures.
There’s no way Liam’s game against Collingwood results in a delisting.

Internal scandals aside Im guessing that he has no ability to play midfield (due to absence of tank), he’s a poor HBF, and not a great small defender.

Either he can’t or won’t do what’s required to be at the level and doesn’t have natural attributes other than a Byron Pickett like body to have a role.

Definitely was not elite. His kicking was horrible this year
It was a great, a real asset in 2021.

Some of his decision making was horrendous this year though.

There one match he tried flushing a left foot pass through the middle which was inevitably turned over for a goal. Half an hour later he tried another half baked left footer into the 50.

It’s one thing to be complacent with your conditioning, it’s another thing to be lazy and undisciplined during the course of a game.

Please, it's barely in the top 10

That's just insulting to the people responsible for such monstrosities as:

- giving Zac Williams a 6 year, $850k per year contract

- trading 2 second round picks and a state league priority for the right to overpay Mitch McGovern

- the original Stocker trade

- drafting Dow and O'Brien with top 10 picks in the same year. Bonus points for passing on Cerra then trading a first round pick for him later on

- trading back in the draft from pick 12 (next 2 players = Kosi Pickett and Will Day) to draft an injured Brodie Kemp 1 pick ahead of Sam De Koning (whose brother is on the team), then trading up 2 picks later for... Sam Philp (this sequence is still mind boggling poor)

- appointing David Teague as coach with basically no process because he managed to go 5-5 with mediocre list.

Could probably go on and on here.

20 years since top 4. 10 years since finals. 7 years since we started a '3 year rebuild'.

Utterly reprehensible...
Every club would have jumped on Dow after us. He was one of the big 3 that year with Rayner, LDU and Dow. We developed hom badly.

Or....he was given strict instructions and has been made an example of. Voss comes from the Matthews era. Leigh Matthews was brutal with selection.

I was always hoping Stocker could develop into a Jack Viney type mid. Crazy tough, no fear, not blessed with athletic ability etc, etc but now we’ll never know, he wasn’t given the opportunity. A real shame…..a bit perplexed atm tbh.
Viney is incredibly fit and has great acceleration. Stock unfortunately not blessed with either :(

I have never been so confused over a decision this club has made.

I had Stocker as a best 22 let alone depth and developing.

This is bizarre.

I’m crying. Thanks.

He's behind Cripps, Kennedy, Hewett, Setterfield and Dow for an inside mid spot. With his poor tank, he probably would never have made it as a mid. His kicking was also poor this year especially on his left foot.

As a small defender, he's behind Doc, Saad, Williams, Newman and Boyd. We may even look to play Gov and Marchbank in the best 22, meaning only playing 3 of the players above along with Weitering and Young.

I think this is fair and list wise, small defenders are pretty easy to find and can draft someone who will cost less.

So ultimately, he was waaay down the pecking order in his positions. Not that surprising.

Historically we are shocking at the national draft.

Hits (best 22): Cripps, Weitering, Curnow, Harry, Walsh, TDK, JSOS, Fisher.

Misses (delisted, traded or disappointing): Dow, SPS, O Brien, Stocker, Williamson, Kerr, O Dwyer, BSOS, Macreadie, Polson, Schumacher

Undecided (very talented but haven't made it yet): Cuningham, Durdin, Motlop, Philip, Kemp, Carroll.

Struggled to nail picks beyond pick 30.
No way! Jury deliberating for sure. I am absolutely convinced that if his last name wasn't Silvagni, JSOS would already be off our list. That'll upset a few of the usual suspects no doubt. :p

So, where we are at now:

Senior List: 33
Rookie List: 5
Rookie B: 1 (removed Owies, who cannot stay on Rookie B list, is likely now on senior list)
33+5=38, max=42. So 4 places now free, along with one free spot on the Rookie B list.

Waiting new contracts:
Senior List: Setterfield, Fogarty, Ed Curnow (3)
Rookie List: none
Rookie B: none

Edit: Removed LOB & Boyd from "waiting new contracts"
Edit2: Removed Cottrell, Durdin, Owies, Honey from "waiting new contracts". Assume Owies must now be on Senior List.
Edit3: Removed Cuningham from "waiting new contracts".
Edit4: Ditto Marchy
Edit5: Akuei contracted.

Stocker and Kerr were unluckly. Kerr could play but too many others similar ahead. Williamson was a decent pick at 61. Not often miracles there. Everyone below us would have jumped on Dow if we didn't pick him. We developed him very poorly in his early days. got harder roles meant for bigger bodies when he should have been allowed to develop in lesser roles.
After Kerr and Williamson, we watched the likes of Luke Ryan, Mitch Lewis, Nick Larkey and Jake Waterman get drafted.

Other clubs seem to nail these picks, we always fail. Whether it's talent identification or development (or both) it's just disappointing.

I thought I was going to be critiqued for under valuing players not the other way round. Sure, but they are all best 22 as they consistently get picked!! That was my criteria, are they players consistently playing AFL....yes, yes and yes.

It’s frustrating.

IIRC we also deliberately traded down because we rated the 2016 draft pool as being deep (which it was) and ended up with a suite of Polson, Williamson, Macraedie and Kerr.

2017 we took Schumacher and Gartlett.

2018 we took BSOS and his best mate O’Dwyer.

Horrible drafting.

It was the first game v Collingwood. Two left foot howlers. Was promptly dropped. But never given a fair run at it whilst Plowman was allowed to turn it over at will and survive multiple games.

I love Stocker and I was both shocked and saddened to see him let go, but if you take the surrounding emotions out of it, I can somewhat understand the club's perspective.

He was clearly never going to make it as a midfielder - this was his biggest deficiency (as called out by Richmond) and it was clear every pre-season when he was behind Dow in the running sessions.

That leaves defence. He is too slow to break lines, and his lack of fitness ensures when he does get up the ground, he's not able to recoup quickly which leaves us exposed on the counter.

Yes he was tough. Yes he stood up for his mates. But unfortunately you still need several AFL quality traits to survive in what is a ruthless industry.

I daresay it was Stocker vs Plowman, and unfortunately for Liam, Plow is still contracted for 2023.

I do wish him well and hope he is given a chance somewhere else. Maybe he could be a Blake Hardwick type?

SOS didn't seem to put a high value on endurance and in hindsight it was a poor decision.

Stocker, Dow, SPS and Fisher were drafted as mids and none of them have good endurance. At least Fish has made it as a half forward and SPS turned into Young.

Could add Kennedy to this even though he's had a breakout year...his TOG is still low and we know Cripps isn't a great runner. The midfield balance was all out of whack...you wouldn't want to play more than 2-3 of Cripps, Kennedy, Setterfield or Dow in the same team and that doesn't even include Stocker and SPS.

So much about the game and being a strong midfield is simply having the physical capabilities to apply massive pressure and run hard all game...just look at Richmond during their premiership run and teams like Sydney, Geelong and Collingwood. A team with a few liabilities in this area will get sliced up even if they are talented.

And the AFL want quicker, higher scoring games and have introduced new rules to achieve this. SOS missed this trend.
