Funnily enough - we need Grundy more than Melbourne do and Melbourne need Lobb more than we do.
Lobb for anything more than our (very early) 3rd rounder is a waste. You can’t assume the blokes single outlier season repeats itself.

Darcy should play the back-up ruck roll to English next year. He’s lightly framed but will have a full pre-season (yes he’ll still be light by AFL ruck standards) but his contested work as a ruck in the VFL was first class. The kid was getting 80%+ of his possessions as contested.

Darcy is never going to be an AFL KPD.
Keen to hear more about why you’re so definitive on that? I rate your judgement on talent on here.

I’ll admit he’s probably lacking in a bit of speed off the mark/closing speed compared to some of the other premier defenders but I think he has a few elite traits that more than make up for that. There’s also some very good defenders going around that have a similar lack of pace like Lever & Collins for example

He has brilliant game sense & reading of the play, he just won’t get caught out of position too badly and has already shown that both briefly at AFL level and definitely at VFL level that he knows where to be ahead of time and can rack up big intercept numbers due to that.

He’s slight now but I think when he adds strength and can hold his own body on body he’d be just about unbeatable one on one due to the sheer size he will be and more importantly reach. He also has a natural intensity to his game and great foot skills. Plus theres few you’d rather in a high ball situation, of course we need to minimise easy entries on the lead but most defenders get killed on the lead and we need to minimise this anyway as the way we currently allow entries is shocking.

I also think we have to consider that he’s coming off serious foot injuries and a lack of footy so probably a very low fitness base, it’s very realistic to think he’ll improve his mobility a lot from here and as a junior his biggest strength supposedly was mobility/athleticism, no one really questioned his pace for the next level so I see no reason to think we’ve seen all he can offer here, he’d only have to improve a touch.

I dunno I just think in the right system he could definitely be a gun defender, in saying that he definitely could be even better forward so I’m comfortable with whatever future we see for him but not sure why people are so quick to write him off as a defender

For those dead-against Lobb (seriously stop listening to Daisy Thomas), you need to take into account the following:

- Jamarra (20) & Darcy (19) are still very much developing. Neither should be relied upon week-to-week as key position locks in the short-term.

- Bruce (30) has looked completely cooked since returning from a knee and wasn’t much chop as a 2nd ruck anyway. He’s another that may be tried in defence.

- Naughton may be required in defence if we can’t recruit KPD’s. Don’t think it’s first choice, but suspect we want it as an option anyway.

- We desperately need a 2nd ruck option. Darcy isn’t ready for this.

- Also need more ruck options/depth (ones that Bevo will actually pick). Also take into account some insurance for English (concussion).

There’s a very good reason why Power and co have eyed off Lobb for some time.

If we want to still compete short term and have a solid tie-over until Darcy etc come on, then he’s a no-brainer.

Wait a second when did Hunter become not very good and an albatross around our neck contract wise?
Geeze. Have one down year with "personal issues" and the knives come out immediately.

Maybe Dunkley is right to show us no loyalty.
I've been thinking the same, he is still a good player, I know there are certain issues he has off field but seems to not affect him when he plays

i don’t think many are dead set against him, it’s just a question of price. I don’t want to overpay for a 30 year-old based on an outlier season of performance.

Going to be a fun few weeks media wise. Noise already started that the price has previously been set at 2 x 1st rounders for players like Taranto and Hopper.

Yet when it comes to Dunkley “1 first rounder should be enough” and Cornes linked in the potential Amon compo when asked about it over the weekend. “Port are very confident with Dunkley and have the Amon compo” or something similar.

We obviously don’t have the leverage to hold him as he’s out of contract. But equally, there is maybe only a 1% chance that either Port or Brisbane will be able to walk him to the pre season given the cap space North, Hawthorn and Essendon have.

I’d rather lose Dunkley for nothing than the Amon pick. Pissweak offer.

Years ago, Port Adelaide ended up at arbitration over a trade. That caused future picks to become trade-able.

We will take them there again if needed. IF we suspect that will be cheaparse Ports choice again…. Our opening request will be their current and future first round picks. It would match the salary they are offering and arbitration will probably mean we would need to give them our future second as part of that trade.

Arbitration will likely find that Amon compensation is not an offer in good faith.

But it’s our biggest weakness..Lobb is exactly what we need.
And then hopefully Darcy stays back.

Maybe our first ruck will be ok with some back up?
No our biggest weakness is our defence and lack of quality KPD's. The only two upsides to Lobb recruitment is that he can play as a full Forward/KPF which will allow Naughton to swing into defence as required and also as a backup to English.
Our ruck situation is definitely a concern but that is from poor coaching, nothing else. Our KPD situation is our main concern overall.
