List Mgmt. 2022 List Management: Draft, Trade and FA Pt2: Electric Boogaloo

Was a good listen. I like how Ryan Daniels kept going about how bad GC performed and gave away 7 like it was worth nothing yet they made a big fuss about Freo not prioritising getting in Sharp after earlier saying how much they wanted to keep him.

I’d say GC targeted getting a win with that trade and when it fell through all they had were losses and likely lose Sharp for nada next year.
his point about how they've had so little attention about the bowes trade is spot on. if any vic club, any sa club or any wa club did that trade, heads would be rolling, fans would be out with their pitchforks.

Wait, Gold Coast didn’t want to trade sharp, but were mad when they didn’t? Bizarre
Gold Coast knew we wanted Sharp and were trying to go all “Weller” take it or leave it on us. They didn’t factor in that we’d just turn around and say “see ya next year, we had bigger targets to get through the door”
They should have just taken NMF3 at the outset and Sharp would be happily lining up for us next year.
As others have said, the hypocrisy of a team who gave away pick 7 to then demand a slightly better pick for Sharp is truely laughable.

They'll want to be playing Sharp a lot next year, and for him to be earning that spot, for the trade value to be better than offered this season.

That's their prerogative.

Karl Worner dominant in preseason running, along with Corbett will be enough new options to choose from.

Below is my idea of a balanced list and coincidentally my view on the positions in an AFL team. I'd be interested to see your thoughts.

List Analysis (age in 2023, contracted to)

Defence

KPD
Hamling (30, 2023): retirement within 2 years likely. Very good depth.
Pearce (28, 2025): B22 lock. Injury prone. Possible Tasmania move.
Cox (25, 2024): B22 lock. Possible trade target.
Benning (20, 2023): Very raw, odds are he won't make it.

Assesment: Next year is the time to draft a quality KPD prospect.
Rationale: There are two possible outcomes in my view: Benning makes it and we don't need to spend draft capital on a KPD, or he doesn't and we should draft a solid prospect using a moderately high pick. It is likely that Benning won't make it, however we can and should wait one more year to act on that.

Small Defenders:
Wilson (30, 2023): retirement within 2 years likely. Very good depth.
Walker (21, 2024) Still developing but likely long term B22.

Assessment: Small defender not required in the next two years.
Rationale: Although a defender with the ability to lock down smalls may be required after the retirement of Nathan Wilson, there are more pressing needs this year. Cover injury with existing players until Wilson retires.

General Defenders:
Hughes (29, 2024): Very good depth.
Ryan (27, 2023): B22 lock. Possible trade/FA target.
Clark (23, 2025): B22 lock.
Young (22, 2027): B22 lock.
Chapman (21, 2027): B22 lock.

Assessment: Draft a speculative general defender.
Rationale: If all of Ryan, Clark, Chapman, Young and Walker are playing, we do not have any non key position defenders developing at Peel. As all of them are young and AFL quality, and half back flankers are not hard to develop, we should not use a valuable pick on this area.

Midfield

Inside Mid:
Fyfe (32, 2023): retirement within 2 years likely. Form unknown.
O'Meara (29, 2026): B+ player who will provide leadership and experience to an otherwise young midfield.
Brodie (25, 2023): B grader who may be squeezed out by glut of A graders in his role. Very good depth.
Serong (22, 2023): B22 Lock.
Erasmus (20, 2025): Very talented, likely B22 lock when Fyfe retires.

Assessment: Inside mid not required in next two years.
Rationale: Currently overstocked with inside mids. Next inside mid should be drafted when O'Meara retires. This would leave us with Erasmus and Serong in the side, Brodie as depth and the draftee developing.

Inside-Out Mids:
Aish (28, 2025): Put him here due to lack of other options. B22 lock for me.
Brayshaw (24, 2025): B22 lock.
Johnson (20, 2025): Developing likely B22 player.

Assessment: Draftee required. Consider FA/Trade for this role as it is hard to fill.
Rationale: Inside-Out mid is one of the hardest positions to fill in my opinion as these types generally go very high in the draft if they are any good. I have shoehorned Aish into this role due to the lack of options at Fremantle. My hope is that Johnson comes on as advertised which would allow Aish to be pushed to an outside midfielder role. Any draftee we take in the next year or two could fill the depth role in years to come if they don't develop into an AFL quality player.

Outside Mids:
Henry (22, 2023): Still developing and highly talented. May not make it.
O'Driscoll (21, 2024): B22 lock, partly due to lack of competition.
Worner (21, 2023): Rookie listed depth player. May see game time due to lack of competition.

Assessment: Draft best available. Should target FA and trades for this role.
Rationale: Pray to your deity of choice that something clicks for Henry this year. Fremantle lack all calibre of outside mids. FA and trade suggested to target known quantity and increase speed of acquisition.

Ruckman:
Darcy (25, 2024): B22 lock. Trade/FA risk?

Assessment: Draftee required.
Rationale: We have two A grade ruckman on the list and then nothing. A competent mature ager would be advised which should be achievable with the picks available.

Forwards

KPF:

Taberner (30, 2024): B22 lock. Retirement within 2 years likely.
Kuek (23, 2023): Very raw, has some attributes but odds are he won't make it.
Treacy (21, 2023): Developing player. Unknown whether he will become AFL or depth quality.
Amiss (20, 2025): Likely B22 lock for 10+ years.

Assessment: Target high quality trade or FA for this role
Rationale: With Taberner soon to retire there will be an opening in the B22, however Treacy has not yet proven himself to be AFL quality. And although Amiss looks to be extremely talented and capable, his body is not built to compete with most KPD yet. A ready made KPF of average or above quality would be the best outcome in my opinion. Worst case scenario: retain and play Treacy after Taberner retires and draft another KPF if Kuek is delisted.

Small Forwards:
Walters (32, 2023): Retirement likely. B22 lock if end of 2022 form continues.
Switkowski (27, 2024): Injury prone. B22 lock, especially after Walters retires.

Assessment: Draftee required.
Rationale: Specialist small forwards can be found later in the drafts. Considering the draft capital available, Fremantle should be looking to fill these sorts of roles. Fills a need with the likely retirement of Walters in the next year or two.

Forward-Ruck:
Jackson: (22, 2029): Likely B22 lock for 10+ years.

Assessment: Draftee required.
Rationale: Speculative tall forwards can be found later in the draft e.g Jack Williams last year. They don't often work out but Fremantle have the luxury of accepting that risk given it's ruck stocks. Note I have deliberately called this player archetype Forward-Ruck as that should be the order of priorities for the requisite skills in my opinion.

General Forwards:
Colyer (32, 2023): Retirement within 2 years likely. Good depth.
Corbett (27, 2024): Unknown ability. Likely depth but a lot depends on preferred team composition.
Schultz (26, 2023): Currently B22.
Banfield (25, 2024): Good depth.
Frederick (23, 2026): Developing likely B22 player.
Sturt (23, 2023): Still developing and highly talented. May not make it.

Assessment: Multiple quality draftees required. Should target with trades and FA.
Rationale: None of the players on the list above are regular, game changing forwards. Fremantle need to acquire quality forwards as a matter of urgency. Note the age of these players....

2022 Draft

30: General/small forward. (Darcy Jones/Jaiden Magor/Jacob Konstanty/Jed Hagan)
44: General/small forward. (Darcy Jones/Jaiden Magor/Jacob Konstanty/Jed Hagan)
67: Forward-Ruck slider. (Harry Lemmey/Tom Scully)
76: Promote Schultz

Rookies: Scaife or Draper, Tipungwuti and mature aged ruckman.

Cat B: Scaife or Draper and Ultan Kelm.

So this. It’s quite bizarre the club trading a player out is filthy at not getting the trade done. Terrible look.

Firstly, nice work.

I also attempted something similar a while ago (somewhere in this list management thread); I think one of the difficulties with this is the level of categories that can be selected and then assigning the ideal numbers and current players to them. For example I had three midfield categories in midfielders, rucks, and wingers; you have Brayshaw as an outside midfielder (presumably on potential to play there), whilst I have him as an (inside) midfielder. Both of us had Benning as a defender, but I think equally he could be in the "forward / ruck" category - given that he did play as that at junior level and also at times for Peel reserves.

Regardless I ended up with pretty much the same draft requirements from a list perspective (I think you meant 2022 draft rather than 2023, given you are talking about players this year?) except I had a "general" defender and only one general forward. I think if you look at your list and look at the sum of the total number of defenders versus what we have, you are also deficient in what we currently have by three.

The other bit is I think we need to weigh up what is available in this draft versus others. There will be some good defender types late in this draft - some names have already been mentioned but there are even more if we take off a predominantly WA filter as well. There are not as many good general forwards in this draft, particularly as late as our picks.

So I would argue we should take a defender in this draft.

Also - Shultz I believe is not on the rookie list (Fremantle Playing List for 2022 - Draftguru) - did you mean Treacy, Banfield or Worner?

Thanks mate, yeah I did mean 2022, whoops.

Yes that's the difficulty really as it's all subjective from the categories through to the rating of players. Just my take on the same exercise I guess.

With regards to the defender, I did have one down for a while but settled on Ultan Kelm. If we don't end up grabbing him ofcourse it becomes more of a priority. I definitely agree with your comment regarding weighing up what is actually left in the draft when our time comes to pick. Not much point having a type in mind if you have 15 players rated above the next available of that type.

The rookie promotion was based off footywire which is no doubt not the best source. I'd also be happy to promote Treacy in that case.

Great post. Thank you

Was anybody able to find out how many years Luke Jackson signed for? Footy wire says end of 2029

Good summary thanks.

Reckon we need Developing KPD now. Logue gone and APearce and our back-up Hamling injury prone.

I would look at:
30-32. Agree 100% with you
40-44. Jed Adam’s (Peel); or
Port Melbourne's Ethan Phillips, who took out the Fothergill-Round-Mitchell (aged 22, 196cm, 92kg)
58-64: Best available sliding Mid
60-66: Forward-Ruck slider. (Harry Lemmey/Tom Scully/Broadbent/Hamish Free)

Rookie Selection pick 13: one from left field
Rookie Aelection 31: Pass (Tippa)

Cat-B
Draper, Scaife

Do we know if the Irish fella is still on the radar?

Can't disagree with your assessment, we need those sorts too. Not really sure about Kelm but I would hope so given our lack of picks in the next couple of years.

We may need to keep a spot free at the end in case there is a late bid on either Scaife/Draper.

If we have two spots available on the rookie list we will be given a fifth round pick as well which we can keep open for academy or pass and take the extra rookie spot.

Also read the early comments from another poster on Schultz. He is 100% on the rookie list.

Another year as a rookie and then upgraded to main list for 2024.

The article link below doesn’t confirm it but I think Bailey Banfield has been upgraded:

2018 Rookie
2019-20 Primary list
2021 Rookie
2022 Rookie

The afl rules state that only three rookies can be retained (Treacy, Schultz, Worner). I don’t believe Kuek counts as he is being essentially offered his first proper contract.

Also Banfield has already has two consecutive years as a rookie. He can have one more but not the second. So between the 3 being retained rule and the 2 year contract. I’m assuming he has been promoted to the primary list like he was in 2019/20.

So from Rookie list perspective:
Out: Banfield (upgraded), Crowden (Delisted), Blakely (Delisted)
In: Kuek, Pick 13, Pick 31 (pass to hold an SSP spot).
