The thread is highlighting one of the great myths in AFL footy.

The overvaluing of LATE first round picks.
Take a look at the players selected from picks 13-20 over the last ten years. The amount of spuds and dud picks in that range is unbelievable. I would think there is a very low chance of picking an elite player in that range. Most of the players selected in that range are solid role playing citizens. A substantial portion are complete spuds. Teams in WCE predicament need elite talent not solid citizens.
It’s a different story for picks from 1 to about 8. The reality is there is only about 3 or 4 truly elite players in a typical ND and the vast majority of them are in the top 7 or 8 picks. When you are wining one game in 23 like the eagles could well be, you MUST ensure that you recruit one of these elite guns.
After this you are getting good players. Slow burners that could eventuate into decent AFL players. But few genuine guns.

Now we are talking about the most sought after pick 1 possibly ever?
As an absolute minimum, I’d want two top 5 picks plus an F1. Minimum.

Melbourne aren’t even inthe conversation. Don’t know why people are suggesting them? Those late teens picks they have aren’t worth Jack s**t here in this potential deal. By the time draft night comes around the dockers R1 pick that Melbourne have won’t even be inthe top 10 anyway.

Time will tell with the Tigers players.
But the reality is if you are going to keep the number one pick and not trade it, it should provide a massive uplift for the club that drafts him both onfield and off-field.

It will be in WCE best interests to do another super deal. They will not get the desired value trading with one club only.

Drag in North, GWS, GC, Melbourne, anyone.

Land three picks in the top 15 and/or some established WA talent. There will no doubt be more top picks over the years but now is the time for quantity. Ginbey, Hewett, Bazzo, Long, Chesser, Culley, add a few more likeminded kids in the same age profile and things look up again.

Reid to whoever wants him most.

Gc will have pick 7-8ish (and the eagles will want to stay inside 5 imo if they trade down) and no guarantee of a their fr1 being top 5. Sharp adds no value as hes a 4th rounder or psd for wce. Gc arent getting pick 1 unless they add someone like powell to the 2 1sts (which they wont).

North and hawks work because they can give the eagles a pick inside 4 this year as well as a future 1st likely in the top 5. I cant see anyone outside those 2 clubs trading for pick 1.

Curtain isnt flying as much this year

I can't see GWS selling the farm and their strong position (which they've done really well to maneuver into) for someone who might be a flight risk.

I think it will be Hawthorn, North and Melbourne as the main contenders.

Melbourne would probably have to trade someone though to be a major chance imo

Thats a lot better than the melbourne and gc offers you suggested but im not sure gws will go for harley at all but if they did it would be a good offer.
