Review 2023 National Draft Review Thread II [McKercher, Z.Duursma, Goad, W.Dawson, Hardeman, Maley]

After us winning the last game, Clarko said that having pick 1 was overrated because history suggests that not many premierships come from pick 1 players, so why would we give up the kitchen sink to get it. No, IMO we will keep picks 2 and 3 and upgrade to try and get a pick 7 or 8. Otherwise we keep what we have to fill our list with talent.

I think it needs to be remembered Clarko is the consummate salesman and at the time was satisfying the people commenting on us dropping pick 1 for a much needed win.

If Clarko likes Reid he’ll do his best to get him.

I think that was just PR for only winning a game after 20 consecutive losses once pick 1 was ours. This club lol.

If we weren't so well stocked of midfielders, I'd be really keen on Kane McCauliffe with a later pick. He is pretty underrated and probably the most physical player in this whole draft. Whoever drafts him will end up with a club favourite due to the way he goes about it. Tough inside mid, physical and tackles with a real intent to hurt. I always thought he wasn't rated because of his athletic profile but his testing numbers suggest he is a pretty solid athlete across the board.

I also hope we are into either Mitch Edwards or Taylor Goad. Plenty has been said about Mitchell, because he has been rated for a long time, but the raw athleticism of Taylor Goad is freakish. Being 207cm and already having a big frame means he won't take as long to physically mature as well.

Careful RF, you go saying things like that around here you’re likely to have to head ripped clean off.

I'm sure Clarko would like the top 5 of the top 20 players just as much as picking up Reid. We have had a crack at Reid and he would be great but not what WCE want, it's too much for us. We need a spread of talent.

I didn't want us to win the last game, BUT I'm hoping it starts some sort of confidence in our game style and what Clarko is trying to build. If Clarko really wanted to win that last game (which I think he did) then he can't expect us to give up the farm for Reid. If he does, then he's not the coach for us. We will have a crack at getting Reid but not for the farm.

That ball movement was fast and exciting- an eye to the future hopefully

I'd love to be a fly on the wall in discussions to see how hard we are prepared to go for him.

If clarko is overriding the list management team we are in trouble.

Nothing to say he'd be overriding them there.

Trust me, we haven't had our crack at Reid yet. We bantered back when they asked for 2 and 3 but we'll put in at least one serious offer before deadline.

It'll be a collective footy department decision. Just like Rawlings said about the decision to target Sheezel and Wardlaw.

Just fwiw on this one, to me the farm is 2 and 3 (it might be to you too). It's highly possible the club look at our extra picks and don't see them as anything more than McKay out and two freebies at the back end which have been brought in to this draft but also helped to secure our two main trade targets in Stephens and Fisher (let's say we lost a PP plus a third rounder to improve the other picks positions and add two guys we want in). The Port R1 is a fragment of the Judas trade.

Getting 3 for McKay has made this a possibility. So if we were going to say we'd still get one of our top 3 targets regardless but we attempt to trade out essentially McKay and one or two freebie picks from the AFL (or from a trade last year) for the guy on top of our board who might be generational (who knows) then I reckon North is for it. The Eagles might not be, but that's when we go back to the hand as it is.

Reckon the ball is in West Coat's court - come to us with a deal that isn't pick 2+3 coz that ain't happening.

Tbh if West Coast wants to sell, go work out a deal for your asset.

I’m pretty confident he’ll be around the mark for pick 15. May go a pick or two before or a pick or two after.

I’d be very curious to know how far he is up on our board, very similar player to Dylan Stephens/Bailey Scott.

If we end up with one of Windsor or Wilson with pick 15 I’ll be a very happy man.
What about Ollie Murphy at 15?
A good key defender would be hard to pass up here.
