There are also a lot of people that just want an opposition player to get as many weeks as possible regardless of whether it is fair or not.

I doubt all the people wanting to see Webster get an 8 to 10 week suspension would be calling for that if it was one of their own players.

Eight weeks is fair, especially if Simpkin misses four from the concussion. WE lost a player to concussion four or five years ago - Ben Jacobs - best tagger in the comp at the time. He never recovered after years of treatment etc.

I think its fair that if the same thing happens to Jy Webster should never play again either and should be sued for all Jy's lost earnings.

Yeah, I would. Don't care who - Tom Lynch, Dustin Martin, doesn't matter. We have to get serious about concussion. You see kids getting concussions in junior footy and their parents are trying to get their kids to play the following week. The whole sport needs to change its attitude and it starts with the AFL and hopefully filters down.

Big difference between accidental collisions playing football , and acts where the player has time to choose their actions . This was obviously a choice Webster took. He goes for many weeks or the AFL aren't serious about this stuff and it's pretty obvious they need to be

you get a bump wrong when there is other actions you could have taken, you get lots of weeks . Period
I don't think it should matter if theres head contact or not. if its a reckless act...you're gone for 4 weeks minimum (if no head contact) or 12 weeks with head contact.
They'd stamp a lot of this crap out in no time and they absolutely have to or the AFL will be spending millions & millions on court cases.
Looks whats happening in Rugby..Head contact whether its accidental or not and you're off. They can see whats coming down the tunnel towards them. AfL are just kidding themselves if they don't think the same train is going to hit them.

My post was replying to another poster who was saying we need to eliminate all head knocks and concussion, which I was expressing is incredibly difficult with the nature and style of AFL football. The pace and physicality are quite intense compared to most sporting codes.

The pace and physicality has to change. If the AFL changed its rule and penalized the player causing concussion regardless of intent, the coaches would change tactics and the game would adapt, like it does every time they change a rule. But while the AFL continue to pay lip service bit effectively do nothing, nothing will change

the league boys got rid of the bump..and haven't really batted an eye since. AFL has to as well

As a gay guy, I heard it was homophobic, so went to find what was said. While I can’t speak for everyone on the LGBT community, honestly if I heard that I wouldn’t be offended by it & see it as derogatory to me at all. Assuming I’ve found what was said is accurate, if someone said it to me, my response what be “yes exactly & are you offering”

If it’s offensive to the gay community logic follows that it should also be offensive to every straight woman as well.

While I don’t like the look of opposition coaches going at other teams players, the blowing (no pun intended) into some homophobic remark I find a bit ridiculous to be honest.

But again I can only talk for myself, others may be offended

I agree with getting rid of the bump. Don’t think it holds much value or entertainment in todays society. I think all the bump adds is fear and worry with the new medical knowledge we have today.

50 years ago a concussion meant you’re a wimp grow a pair and play on. Todays world it is researched and a life altering problem.

Comparing to suspensions over the past 2 years is pointless - there is a clear, new focus and direction on the punishment for these types of hits. Those cited bumps last year and the year before would most certainly see a longer suspension now than the relevant outcome.

The AFL has to show it has taken reasonable steps to reduce the likelihood of concussion events. There will always be an element of risk where the outcome cannot be controlled, such as two players who only have eyes for the footy, however the Webster action was intentional and player directed. The AFL is facing a class action before the court for repeated concussion of past players, this is something the AFL really cant just sit back and say "that's part of the game"

I agree with you.

But, I’ve never considered that term to be a reflection of that. I’ve heard homophobic slurs used 1,000 times, with the purpose of calling someone “gay”. One starts with an F, one starts with a P, one starts with a Q etc.

I’ve only ever heard CS, used as a synonym for w***er, dickhead.

Totally see now how it’s would be latched onto as relating to gay, but again, I’ve literally never heard it used like that.

And seemingly most people seem to agree.

Scapegoating inherently implies that there is a large degree of innocence to the person who is assigned as the scapegoat, and they have not done anything wrong. Webster chose to bump and damage Simpkin. He won't be found as innocent and could have chosen not to put himself in the position he now finds himself in.

I dont think ive seen such a blatant (and damaging) head high hit in tecent times that I can recall.

Personally I though SPP would get 5 and this is worth 6 to 8. That's isn't scapegoating, especially if 6 to 8 is the penalty going forward for a similar action.

It's no longer, and has not been for some time, acceptable to be abusive to players and umpires in any lower grades.

Take that sort of talk to any under-age game and you will be banned in no time.

Not a good look from the big league and should be seen to accordingly with the image of the game.

Same way this bump is at least 6 weeks.

Though all these preseason bans will get the AFL pushing for a longer season, less preseason games and more TV, gate and advertising revenue.

Simpkin probably wouldn’t even have been subbed out of the game if he played for port.
