Its a catch 22. They could well be weighing up the pros and cons. The part playing in the favour of SCOTUS not fully applying presidential immunity in some sort of blanket shield is a couple of things.

1. Trump could look to dismantle and reduce SCOTUS power permanently if elected which removes the protection the people have from a dictator. Which had Trump been 50-60yo they may have considered it as Trump could then have then potentially led the USA for decades.

2. Trump will be in his 80s after the next term which means within 5 years we are going to get a new post Trump era leader as age takes its toll. Do they really want to kill themselves over a leader who is not going to be around long term.

I guess the other alternative is that it has just been used as a tactic to delay the court appearance until after the election. Which if he wins, he will no doubt be giving himself a pardon

Had it been last year, sure. But its not. This year republicans seem to be all about saving themselves. Watch the hypocrisy as GOP members who previously publicly hated Trump align themselves with him in the coming weeks and month.

I'm hoping it is some of the normal republicans who are quitting.

There has to be enough GOP members left with a spine to sign this off.

There 3 or 4 who are planning on retiring at the end of their terms who have historically supported providing aid to Ukraine. The belief is they have nothing to lose getting on board.

There is also at least 1 dem to date who is aligned with Palestine and has stated they won't sign the petition as it includes aid to Israel

Yes, but its not just that. He has specifically said in interviews and his speeches that he will diminish the power of SCOTUS, he will dissolve federal law enforcement agencies, he will look to establish the president as the ultimate decision maker. Even by making sure the VP a died in the wool MAGA who drinks the cool aid. Why? clearly so if he loses an election the VP won't ratify the collegiate vote. By making the GOP fully MAGA by removing everyone else, he is ensuring congress does his bidding.

I still don't think Trump will win the election. Thats the big hurdle. Even if he survives all the court cases, he wont win the election and MAGA GOP dont have the numbers to force anything at this stage.

OneGreatClub unfortunately, you appear to be right. SCOTUS have made some very questionable decisions, including basically throwing out the 14th amendments under the guise it gives states too much power. From what I understand is Colorado's insurrection decision has been over turned. Basically creating a precedent that no person will ever be prevented from running for president.

So Trump is still on the Ballot for now.

As for the SCOTUS hearing on presidential immunity. This one is incredibly dangerous. While I am confident Trump will still have to face charges, SCOTUS appears certain to try and link as many of his indictments as they can under the banner of presidential immunity so they can seriously weaken any insurrection charge and the classified documents. They can't do it all because they can't gift Biden the keys to the kingdom. But damn, the corruption is real.

So depressing.

Yes it is quite depressing. And even if Trump loses again in 2024 his and Flynn etc militias will spring into action. There will basically be civil war. Like Biden said to Trump you can’t only love your country when you win, unfortunately Trump disagrees.
