I guess the other alternative is that it has just been used as a tactic to delay the court appearance until after the election. Which if he wins, he will no doubt be giving himself a pardonIts a catch 22. They could well be weighing up the pros and cons. The part playing in the favour of SCOTUS not fully applying presidential immunity in some sort of blanket shield is a couple of things.
1. Trump could look to dismantle and reduce SCOTUS power permanently if elected which removes the protection the people have from a dictator. Which had Trump been 50-60yo they may have considered it as Trump could then have then potentially led the USA for decades.
2. Trump will be in his 80s after the next term which means within 5 years we are going to get a new post Trump era leader as age takes its toll. Do they really want to kill themselves over a leader who is not going to be around long term.
