I can still remember watching him play in his first game at VFL level when he first got to the club in 2012, and thought he was a mile off being an AFL footballer - boy, was I wrong. His willingness to learn and improve over the journey has been an absolute credit to him, and I'm sure he's made many of us eat our words at one time or another. Can anyone remember the thread about Blitz started by a Hawks supporter in Bay 13 in the lead-up to his senior debut? That was one massive self-own for the clown who started that thread, but I digress.

Has become an absolute weapon for us. From starting out as a ruckman at the start of the 2013 season, then turning into a resolute key position defender, then onballer, wingman, tagger - he's pretty much played in every position and role for us at one time or another. Hell, the guy was so good they introduced a rule to curb his influence going 3rd man up in ruck contests in 2017 - so the bloke just morphed into a key defender and won our B&F the following season.

Congrats on a marvelous career thus far Blitz, you absolute cheat code of a footballer!

Yep. He has become fair dinkum unbelievable. 250 games and I would not bet against him playing another 50.

I think we all owe Cam Guthrie's dad a huge thank you for tipping off Wellsy about one of Cam's mates. That mate happened to be a person many refer to as the most versatile player in AFL/VFL history. Looking at some of the stats have been shared in this thread, it's hard to argue with that. What a great player.

We don't lose milestone games worked on Monday... maybe it can work again here in a far tougher match up??

Very hard to judge. Champs of the past ..with modern training and game plans ..who knows what Farmer and Whiten might have been. So much was different. Farmer being 191ish probably would not have played as he did, TW was only a midfielders height. Id still back and take Pavlich but MB has been awesome for us.

Very true - if we could actually assess this across the 125 years of the game, across the three major states up until the 80s, it would be a truly fascinating comparison. I mean, Senior started as a winger, right? Before he moved to the HFF and then of course the most famous iteration as a truly dominant full forward. No doubt he could have played on ball like his son with better planning and preparation and probably a few less sessions on recreational treats.

Shaun Burgoyne, Matthew Pavlich, Adam Goodes, Andrew McLeod and Richo all played across the ground just to name a few of the previous era. I'm not old enough to go back to the 80s, however I imagine Dunstall could have carved out a very good career in the midfield, and guys like Paul Roos would have adapted.

No, he didn't - he went for Olympic selection and only started in the VFL late in the year.
Correct.. was signed by Cats with proviso that he be allowed to finish Olympic trials

Go Catters

Constantly has proven every one wrong, I myself thought at times he would benefit from learning a role in the 2s, and as is often the case I was completely wrong.
He has constantly evolved his game, constantly improved, constantly adapted to best suit what we need.
Comes across an absolute ripping bloke as well, and a perfect team mate/club man

what a gift he is, when he went down last year with that hammy I think we all knew the year was cooked as he was literally the player we could least afford to lose.

I remember thinking he could be our CHB early days. He's hardly played back ever since, only as midfield assistance. Never ever been pigeon holed.
So many great blitz goals over the years at timely moments.
Well done on a fantastic career!

a deadly left foot weapon

Came in to say this.

Much has been said about his utility but part of that is a severely underappreciated left foot.

He regularly boots 60m on his left (as his highlight video showcases) both to send it into 50 as well as a goal or two.

He was also the reason why the "3rd man up" rule was put in place. Deadset legend of the club.
If only we knew what field sport he used to be in.

We could tell the channel 7 commentators. They'd be interested.

Congratulations on the 250. A terrific player for Geelong that I confess I couldn't see the point of when he joined the club.

From short haired new kid on the block, to the hairband member we see today

For a guy listed as being 198cm, the clean pick up below the knees & goal on the kick from Miers is crazy good

But my fav is the last highlight shown - taking the ball out of the ruck, throwing it on the left boot and kicking a goal from outside 60m is just a ridiculous highlight

What an absolute champion is Mark Blicavs. There have been many great players who have played 250 games. Not many can claim to have revolutionised the game like Blicavs can.
You often hear people remark how he can play just about any position on the field. But to me, I see it from the reverse point of view. We have imagined structuring the field itself for the better part of a decade around the strength and mobility of a single player. No highlight reel can really do justice to that.
