Autopsy Round 5, 2024: GWS v St.Kilda

I think we must play King, Caminiti and Membrey in the same team. Max seems to be burdened by the responsibility of being the main man, so we need Caminiti to play with attacking intensity to take the pressure off Max and continue to develop his own game. He seems to play better when Max isn't there, because he doesn't want to stuff up the game plan when he is.

Membrey knows what to do and where to be so leave him to play like he always has.

Opposition defences then also have to mind three marking players. But we need to move the ball properly to those players and they need to get their synergy right.

Don't mind Max being CHF for a month or two, might do him the world of good.

Hugo Garcia, how good was your first exposure to the big time? If Higgo (or whoever) hadn't dropped the mark from your excellent centre break delivery we'd be celebrating you as a first game match winner!!!

That's not the point I was getting at.

The point I was getting at was what bloody hope did King have with that delivery
If King was there when they switched off he may have been on the end of a few.

They switched off so the pressure on the kicker and the forward line was much less.

Would have been nice to have King there in the last 40 seconds.

Does King have a tank? (I’m being serious) Could he become a Ruckman / forward?

I think they wrapped him in cotton wool because of his past knee injury, but even when used to ruck the throw ins forward he gets buckled over constantly by the stronger opponents. Hopefully his knee is ok, and unless we are going to play Hayes I think King does need to be freed up by being thrown onto the ball occasionally.

I think how we played once Ming went off shows that he and Caminiti cannot play in the same forward line. Garcia straight into the 22 next week.

Caminiti looks better when Max isn't there and he can be our main focal target, he isn't as talented as Max but he is more reliable.

Max is such a hot and cold player, when he is hot he makes us a much better side but when he is cold like today he brings us down.

After he went off today we started looking for other forward targets, we were less predictable and the goals started to flow again.

The team scored as many goals in the quarter that he was off, as the 3 quarters when he was on.
So your sample size is 1 game.

And then forgetting the Essendon game he didn’t play.

And forgetting the pies and cats games where he was massive for us.

For 3 and a half quarters today I don't care if you were Tony Lockett.

You were not going to have a good day as St.Kilda tall forward that's how bad our entries were.
Lockett would have kicked five today. All by dead straight drop punts.

Part of the reason he would have kicked five is he wouldn’t have left the forward 50. But it’d be five all the same!

Garcia with 11 disposals (7 contested) and 6 tackles from 38% game time is wild. Put himself at the head of the pack of the newbies, and that includes Pou.

Shout out to Ro with a set of stats that we may not ever see again. 28 disposals (18 contested), 7 marks, 16 clearances (9 centre clearances), 10 inside 50s and 25 hitouts. Anyone still think we need a true tap ruckman and pining for Trent Knobel with his 36 hitouts and 0 disposals?
Instead of Marshall hack kick the ball forward 20 times a game.. I’d rather have him tapping to one of our mids and getting better/ cleaner entries and bring the rest of the midfield into the game.. Him hack kick forward = our other mids having no impact, and potential intercepts by opposition.

Nobody is saying he is no good, just that our forward line seems to function better without him.
Is that structural, poor inside 50's, too many talls?
Admittedly it is anecdotal. We looked much more dangerous last year at the beginning with Hammer, Sharman and Membry seemingly more mobile. Today it was more GWS going to sleep and as someone noted Coniglio going off.
The forward line clogs with him there, is that a lack.of forward leading. bombing to the square a combo of both?
I don't know, but results where we kick 6 in 10 minutes after he has gone off will have people asking the question.

The king takes in here are laughable.

I understand you defending him, because it wasnt his fault we lost. But how would you describe his game today other than he was very ordinary. The difference with King is that he is such a focal point and we direct so many inside 50's to him, when he has an off day you see the other players drop their heads around him. The other forwards are working their arses off chasing and defending yet no balls get delivered in their direction. All too often you see things go against him and then see him drop his head - he has to understand that affects the entire team. If he wants to be paid and play as the main man then he needs to start consistently perfoming as such.

My take is for a key forward he is way to introverted and lacks genuine belief in himself far too often.

I was thinking about this during the game. That’s a risk extra possession and out chain of handballs around a contest is usually pretty poor. We just need to set up for the back kick out of the contest. If it happens 20 times a game then you set up for it. The old play in front of your man is rarely the wrong option.

I said it before, and will say it again, king should be playing as a CHF hitting the logos then doubling back. He has a great field kick and a decent tank. He's not a natural FF, he might get there but right now his best fit is at CHF, maybe relief ruck.
That and he is not good one out wrestling with full back like Hawkins can, so better for him to run and jump towards the ball, just need to put it in front of him, instead of on his head with 3 defenders hanging off him.

The question for me is, would we be better of without King and having two more gun mids. As much as I love screaming MAAAAAXXXXXYYYYYYY!!!!! I also suspect we’d be better off with two gun mids. So it’s only normal that others question this as well…

GWS arrogantly put the foot down when they thought it was necessary, and cruised when they thought it was in hand. At the end they were scrambling frantically hoping for the siren.

We shouldn’t get seduced by the finish. We have cracks to fill. We lack class and polish. And we butcher the ball.

But Lyon has made this a plucky team. It never gives up. Three narrow heart breaking losses. With a slice of luck we could have won any or all of them. But doing so also colours where we really are. Developing for the future.

I’d love to see Lyon roll the dice. Give Garcia a block of games, ditto for Hastie and Collard. Get them in there. They will make mistakes but they can also electrify the other lads.

Loved what Garcia did. Let’s see what the other lads can do as well.

We still haven’t won a game by less than a kick since 2020. When it happens it will be another barrier broken down.

My sense was that we never really believed we could beat GWS until the end when we smelled their fear. And they arrogantly never believed we could beat them until reality dawned on them and caused them to pedal furiously.

But if we’d won it then it would have been theft.

If any other forward in the league was able to push defenders in the back like Hawkins then they’d be fine as well. Oh sorry, I mean “use their strength”… 🙄

King should play 50% game time at FF, 30% game time in the ruck and 20% on the pine.
