Yes agree, make this bs "he made an attempt" to not be grey. Did it hit the boot, or fist make contact on handpass? No, free kick for incorrect disposal. But I fear the correction for holding the ball is making it a problem as players are clearly panicking when around a scrum of players and are tentative to take the ball, or not hit someone high, tackle correctly etc. We have a contact sport where players in congestion have to calculate so many variables and the playmaker is at just as much risk of giving away a free kick as anyone.

Don't know the solution, could it be maintain positions somewhat? 2 players minimum in each third of the ground? during a ball up only ruckman and 2 midfielders can be in a protected zone to contest?

I do wonder how much the AFL spends in umpiring analysis and rule changes beyond just gut feel and media and public input.
We need an umpire on both sides of the contest within 20m of the contest - dare I say it - 6 field umpires - two in each of F&D 50 and 2 between in Arcs.

The problem is they can’t reach every contest so umpires from 60m away are making errors.

Could help with incorrect disposal, holds etc

Pittonet has to stay in the VFL. Nothing against him but he can't play forward and DeKoning has become such a point of difference for us. Need him in the midfield as much as possible.

Cerra's first game back has always been poor. It would be tempting to bring him back via the VFL but he's too good for that and that may not work.

I think there is a good chance we see Cerra for Carroll and Motlop could possibly come in as the sub, although I think we are trying to push his fitness so perhaps not.

Cottrell could be back but I don't think he comes straight back either.

Jack Martin is a possibility as well.

A lot has changed since these guys have been out. Cincotta has done very well in Cottrell's role on the half forward flank. Williams has gone forward and done very well so Martin and Motlop have to work around that. DeKoning has gone from mediocre third tall forward to premier ruckman. E Hollands has come in and done very well in the midfield so Cerra has to work around that. Even Marchbank has had a few games in the VFL in a row so could be considered although his form is not that good.

We might not see everyone come back immediately either.

My guess is that Cerra replaces Carroll and Martin or Motlop replaces Durdin as the sub. Martin could replace Owies but he may have to come back via the VFL.

A healthy list with talent in the VFL would be good to see.
If we didn't have the bye, might've contemplated bringing in a Cerra, Motlop or Cott to help refresh a player or two, like give Ollie a break again which helped him earlier in the season, Acres is looked a bit sore the last couple of weeks, make Cerra sub or in with Kennedy/Hewett sub with Cerra being managed somewhat. I think the bye means we probably will remain close to unchanged if no injuries transpire in the coming 12 days.

Give Cerra and Cotts some heavy match sim over the coming week or 2 and see how ready they are, I think only one of them will make way in for Carrol next game with line up pretty much unchanged unless forced.

More responsibility to boundary umps? Why can't they blow a whistle for obvious incidents they see?

Sometimes injury and bad form unearth things. We have been forced to make some changes after a flogging and some injuries and they have paid off. Not those changes look to be a part of our best 22. The cavalry coming back in means their role changes as well.

Cerra can do what I have wanted him to be doing for ages now and play more minutes forward. He and Hollands can rotate together there really well. Elijah can also play on the wing as well as the middle so he's becoming a real weapon for us.

Williams impacting forward means that that role in the forward pocket is now held by a strong player. Martin, rather than replacing a struggling player or sub probably looks to replace Owies who is a decent player but similar to Martin in his leading, marking role. Motlop probably doesn't walk straight in as Fogarty is impacting the game as well so he probably gets to play as a sub. Then you have Cottrell. I don't think he comes straight back. How good was Cincotta again? I think he could be better than Cottrell.

We are a good side when we have rotations and strong players on every post. With some luck we will have that.

The best part of this game was how nearly every player made it really hard for the coach to drop them.

We've made some improvements and we will be going into the Geelong game far better than last time IMO.

Harry was back on pretty quickly...
Probably wanted to give his brother some twin payback. Surprising they didn't go too hard on each other during the game, but I think they're aware mum would've run down the stands and clipped them on the ear in doing so. Actually somewhat I think the coaches were kinda glad they both cancelled each other out somewhat without major impact on the game as knowing those 2, the extra bravado of showing up your brother could've resulted in lord knows what.

Was it just me or did their period of 3rd quarter dominance coincide with TDK being off and Kennedy/Cripps taking a lot of ruck contests? Gave away a lot of clearances and ruck free kicks.

I’ve been loving solo TDK but is it sustainable for us?

100% I said this to my mate at the ground.

This was basically us in the Geelong and Adelaide games though; we kicked 2.8 vs Geelong and the Adelaide game should have been iced midway through the fourth quarter.

If you couldn’t convert when required, you played bad football.
The Drug Cheats scored 1.5 and 3.6 in the 1st and 3rd quarters respectively.

So 4.11 in total.

BUT (as someone said), 5 at minimum were rushed behinds - which presumably doesn't include goal square punches (like when TDK destroyed a couple of them)?

Anyway, leaving that aside - the 4.11 becomes 4.6 - nothing unusual in that on a damp, cold, slippery night?

Hard to know what to do without knowing how everyone is travelling. I don't think Cottrell comes straight back does he? Cincotta has stepped into this role and is to me is doing it better.

I think if fit I could see Cerra for Carroll, Martin for Owies and Motlop for Durdin as the sub. I think those are all upgrades.

Bringing them back all at once, three injury prone players who have all torn muscles recently, it's a little risky.

But unchanged is a likely outcome as well. Could they all return via the VFL?

Coulda, woulda, shoulda. Didn’t.

Yeah,nah.

Smashed them in 3 of the four quarters.

Would love to know from the coaches if we shut down in the third. Rucking Cripps & Kennedy was a little perplexing.
Stopped playing our way for most of the third, only time we didn’t look dominant in the game.

Something that hasn’t really been highlighted, and the most pleasing thing from my perspective, is we blunted every “weapon” they had that was going to give them a chance of winning the game.

Merrett, Stringer, Langford, Wright, Ridley were all beaten.

That’s good coaching and excellent execution.

The only time that got untidy was Martin getting off the chain in the third. Was acknowledged in the 4th and Cowan did an excellent job extinguishing that threat.

Came out in the fourth and smashed them. Same as last week so it doesn’t look like it’s a fluke.

We look legitimate. Get a couple back hopefully after the bye and set ourselves up for a real crack. Loving it.

Go baggers.
Odd in the extreme.

Two explanations.

1.giving TDK a big rest (I actually thought he must have been injured) and/or
2. he knew we had them covered and was trying out a few things...

(noting the entire team looked leg heavy and lethargic in the 3rd quarter)

don't think Jack Martin is an automatic inclusion, not while Williams is tearing it up in his role. The pressure then goes onto someone like Fog or Owies, and honestly what Martin provides is closer to Owies role than it is Fogs. And Fog has made himself near impossible to drop, from a TOG perspective and tackles inside forward 50 per game. It's him, Boyd, Cinc, Hollands (both of them) and Williams playing a role and making it work that got us over

Let's take a moment to reflect on the amazing problem we're about to have. Genuine selection headaches. B L I S S.

Anyway... Fog is not getting dropped for anyone. Ditto Williams. Fog is a pressure beast. Williams too, plus he kicks goals.

Jack Martin walks into this side when fit. Durdin the first to be dropped. Not exactly like for like - but I think Martin and Williams could play deeper if required and probably do that role better than Durdin.

Owies, Durdin & Motlop are battling for the last spot up forward. Pick whoever is in form... or given that Owies hasn't re-signed for 2025 (I think..?) pick one of the others who are younger with an eye to the future. Owies stays for now.. but Motlop comes in when he finds form in the 2's.

I would pick Hewett over Kennedy. Kennedy is a bit more versatile but we do not need any of his versatility - no spot for him up forward, and we can't persist with him rucking.

Getting Cottrell back into the team is where things start to get tricky. I'd drop Olle Hollands. Harsh, but I see no-one else.

I like it. You get the net effect of switching Owies and Martin whilst including Mots for more crumbing; there's suddenly a lot more speed, marking, x factor and a potential third tall option up there.

Just, I'd be extremely hesitant to **** with a functioning machine. Our forward line hasn't worked like this for a long, long time, and a part of that is because each player - Owies, Fog, Williams, McKay, Curnow, Cincotta, Lij - each has their definitive role as part of transition and knows each other's strengths. They're all different, and they each are starting to use that difference for advantage.

I also think Voss won't want to be without his goal-kicking tagger for the rest of the season, either.

It's always great to beat that lot. Eat a bag of :poo: Bombers! Let's just put some manners on those Cats after the bye, and nail down that spot we currently have in the top two. Things really are staring to fall nicely into place for us now.
