Lets hope Francis Evans brings his career winning percentage with him
😉

25 wins
9 losses
73.53 %
I'm a bit surprised that he was let go as he played 17 games at Port last year.

It seems to me that Voss wants to play 4 small forwards, even if there are better footballers languishing in the 2's. I find it hard to understand or support that approach. But, Voss is an AFL head coach and I'm not. So I hope it proves to be a successful gameplan. I'm just not convinced that we have 4 AFL quality small forwards.
You have to be adaptable. I don't think many teams have 4 top-quality Half Forwards and Forward pockets.

I think that people need to realise that Frank is the last picked player on our list. It's unlikely that any player picked is likely to move the needle too much.

Each and every player trying out for a spot at this time of the year has either played for and been discarded at another club or has been overlooked by every club.

He's not a high draft pick. He's a backup and hopefully he puts his head down, has a real crack and takes any opportunities that he is offered.

BTW people already thinking TDK has gone…..seriously.

I’ll bookmark it there’s NO CHANCE he leaves.

No source,no birdie,no intel,no no.19 tram.

He doesn’t seem to me to be that player who leaves only for cash.

I second this!!

I have no intel but I guarantee that TDK stays, put your house on it, never in doubt, whispers from next room at the physio!!! TDK is going no where!!!

IMO, the club picked the ‘best possible’ and ‘best performer this summer’.
I’d rather give a kid who has done everything asked and put his best foot forward than someone that hasn’t hit the mark or performed.
Our list currently has depth in every position, no matter what we feel about certain players!

In my opinion, Mcmahon is a way better footballer and a greater need than Evans
I honestly wish Frankie all the best, but am baffled by this selection.

We're entering the season with 2 genuine key forwards on our list, and one of them going in with a dodgy knee. The end of 2024, we had to reshuffle our line up without Charles or H available - but had a 200cm forward running around kicking bags of goals in the VFL that we couldn't select. We were just lucky we came up against a team over in the west that resembled witches hats.

I'm not saying McMahon's up to their standard, but would be a pretty handy back up without having to reorganise the team if we lose one or both of our key forwards. Our coaching staff must have pretty high raps on Lemmey right now if he's our back up option in the long run. Or Kemp again as the alternative 'key forward'??

For mine we have to start rewarding players in our VFL system with an opportunity if their form warrants, otherwise we'll end up losing them which affects our system and doesn't make us an overly attractive destination for players to come if there isn't a clear pathway. At the end of the day, the only recent player from our VFL to be given an opportunity was Cincotta - and even then, we wouldn't have picked him if Markov hadn't gazumped us and headed back to the Pies.

Surely Harry Lemmey as a 200cm player who plays primarily as a CHF or FF in the VFL qualifies as key forward?

TDK can pinch hit up forward if required.

HOK has shown forward capacity.

Brodie Kemp is undersized as a key forward but has shown that he can pinch hit there.

So to me we have 3 genuine key forwards on our list and 3 that can pinch hit if required. Some would have to improve to hold down the fort, but there's not much point having Lemmey on the list and then getting insurance for the insurance forward.

Haven't even mentioned JSOS there.

Of course we have players who could potentially 'pinch hit' - what I'm talking about is if we lose one or both of our key forwards for a sustained period.

Kemp got found out against the Stains the following week after the WCE game, and JSOS has been training in the preseason to play down back. Of course we can reshuffle our forwards and backs around, but why upset team balance and cohesion if you have a back up option ready to roll?

Lemmey hasn't yet shown he can play as a key forward, more of a mobile tall at VFL level- and even then, McMahon was miles ahead of him in 2024 as a goalkicking forward. HOK is still developing, and we don't even know if he can play a key position role.

Anyway, I've said my piece and that's that. As a pretty avid VFL watcher (Carlton VFL) I'm obviously disappointed with the selection, but hopefully I'm proven wrong and Frank the Tank becomes a solid contributor to our success this year.

I will look at the positives:

  • the highlights package looks pretty fair
  • he’s been at two good clubs, so should know what is required
  • he has the same surname as one of my all time favourite Carlton smalls!
Yep. Harry Evans was my favourite too. Was a ripper that was cut short by injury. Those 2 goals he kicked were close to goal of the year in 1901 ;)

Fair to say, we are under represented numbers wise for small/pressure forwards compared to many/most clubs. The modern game has elevated their use and “importance”.

Our game plan is quite brutal with the use of our small/medium forwards. We now have a “pack” that are on a similar level and are somewhat interchangeable. May be forecasting a rotation policy. (Spitballing)
Are we though? I think we're under represented for quality, but numbers wise?

Williams, Motlop, Fogarty, Fantasia, Durdin, Cotrell, Hollands, Moir...Cincotta is capable, and now Evans.

I do agree they are all at a similar level.

hmmm and experienced genuine small forward good enough to play 17 games for Port in 2024 ...cheap cover for any continuation of crapola form from Durdin and Motlop is my guess- highlights show he can kick off either foot which is a positive - strong enough to take a tackle and still dispose/kick/score effectively - can also boot em from 40 meters out - lots to like in what looks like a genuine money-ball play.

Hollands and Moir are half forwards, Cottrell is a wing/half forward. Fogarty is a defensive forward more than anything. We even seem to consider Williams as our Martin replacement, although I consider him a small forward. Cincotta is a tagger who sometimes plays on opposition defenders.

Motlop and Durdin are our true small forwards. The others have different roles week to week it seems.

At the very least, our VFL team will play the same way as our senior side with the depth we have. Can only be a good thing.
