Autopsy Crows hammer Saints by 63 in round 1

I don't understand how a team who is significantly taller than us ran all over the top of us. Our players looked slow and were running as if they had lead in their shoes.

The drop off since the start of 2023 is insane. Can we get Nick Walsh back to the club?

Such a mundane game from us other than that. We condemn Arie to the back pocket instead of using his talents to help us the other way. No impetus to move the ball on quickly until the game was well and truly over. We played a small forwardline yet kicked the ball to packs all day long.

The physical pressure was nowhere to be seen, and when we did tackle, the crows players just walked out of them. We were caught on the wrong side of the contest multiple times which led to easy goals out the back.

Makes me wonder what we have been doing all off season, I know there are injuries, but surely you can give effort. Guess the writing really was on the wall after the Port game.

Not going to get too upset. Did not expect to win. Some disappointing aspects of course.

Hall a positive. Garcia started to get into the game toward the end. Windy was a bit more prominent than he has been for a while. Boyd competed. Macrae did what we thought he would. Hastie was ok. O’Connell struggled to get into it. But he will be good long term. Schoenmaker did some good things. On another day that boot will be good for us.

I thought they tried hard but we just lacked the skill and experience of Adelaide. Best thing we can say is we will be better for the run. 2 or 3 back next week would be handy. Especially in the forward line.

I’ll forget about this game quickly I hope.

Need to scrap any talk of free agents. What is the point?

Full rebuild, let's just do it properly. We are a bottom 4 list. Trade Steele, Wilkie and Sinclair, let's just bottom out the next 3 years and get some kids that might at least give us something to look forward to.

Would much rather be in Richmond's position right now. We have 3 potential guns IMO. Pou, Tauru and Wilson. NAS is gone. Just gut it and start again.

In the meantime, the coaching staff need to address why we are clearly undersized against every other side. It's truly a disgrace. Every other team is ripped, we have nobody in good shape and we just get completely bullied.

It greatly concerns me that Ross criticised Steele about being overweight when he came to the club. Now looks malnourished and has gone from being a gun, to B grader at best. Can't win a contest to save himself.

Just feels like the coaching staff doesn't rate strength and conditioning work, which is incredibly basic thinking.

Makes "contact" injuries a truckload more likely as well, as you have no padding to absorb contact.

For me, massive queries on the coaching staff, when it is blatantly obvious our conditioning is nowhere near AFL standard.

Going to be a horrendously boring year. Not one thing about our game is exciting. Bunch of slow, weak players with ordinary skills. Meh.

This club will never go anywhere as long as Steele is still captain. That he's seemingly the only choice available says it all.

I honestly feel like Lyon has misplaced his balls. Maybe they're in Mrs Battle's purse.

All this feel good stuff and delegating etc.

Place needs an Alpha

Steele should not be captain.

We need to expect more.

Been saying to trade them and got torched you can add marshall to the list.

They had 80 more disposals and still beat us on tackles. The effort set by the likes of Steele, Hill, Jones etc is unacceptable.
Definite green shoots with the youth thankfully
We were smashed on the outside where they seemed to move the ball out of congestion with little pressure.
Hill, Arie, Webster - 0
Clarke, Cordy, Hastie, Jones, Sinclair, Wilkie - 1

Sinclair & Jones with 1 tackle each is pathetic, If Boxey can't offer more than Jones I'd be surprised.

Crawdad, Wilson, Wilkie, Hall good. The rest not good.

For next week:

Out: Marshall (inj), Cordy, Jones, Hastie, Byrnes
In: Keeler, Owens, Stocker, Boxshall, Travaglia

B: Webster, Wilkie, Schoenmaker
HB: Nas, Caminiti, Sinclair
C: Hill, Steele, Wilson
HF: Hall, Wood, Garcia
F: Higgins, Keeler, Owens

Foll: Boyd, Makcrae, Clark
Int: Boxshall, O'Connell, Stocker, Windhager
Sub: Travaglia

Most uncompetitive we have looked in a round 1 for a long time.

Players looked flat
Structures were either not implemented correctly or just plainly didn't work
Gave up several end to end goals
Outnumbered everywhere

The big one is pressure we applied had 0 impact on their disposal. It's the same rule for when you leave you man to spoil, you better ****ing impact the contest or kill the ball because if you don't it's a training drill the other way. Time and time again we have players peeling off their man to add to the pressure on the ball and the crows got the ball out and waltzed it forward with a numbers advantage.

When you look at the size of our boys 🧒 compared to the crows it’s no wonder we’re so injury prone. We look like an u16 side.
I'm like a broken record, I know, but Thilthorp has been in the system for 4 years and already has more mass than literally our entire team. Why can't we get players putting on mass like that?
If Max King had a bit of size, he wouldn't get outmuscled in every single marking contest.

Worse than expected.

Ugly
  • The backline. What a disaster. Even in all our bad performances under Ross, we've had a respectful defence to fall back on. There was no semblance of structure or game plan there today. Just some uncompetitive nonsense. I have no idea how we improve that but it cant stay how it was today
  • Moving Caminiti to the backline 2 and a half games too late. This board said all preseason he needed to go back due to lack of options. Why didnt we trial him there in the preseason games? Why wait until today to do the obvious thing? Yes he made some mistakes when he was back there but he was completely unprepared. He should have been training and playing there all preseason instead of being a mid-game panic option.

Bad
  • Skills were sloppy
  • Large passages where the mids were beaten too easily.
  • Subbing off a kid when we are getting belted. I get Hastie was quiet after quarter time but at least give him a chance to get back into the game.
  • Lack of tackling pressure all game.
  • Marshall is so underdone it's not funny. The decision to play him was a bad one. Sinclair also underdone but will be better for the run and got better as the game went. Marshall, not even close to being ready.

Still found some good
  • Hall on debut. This kid has something. Hope we keep with him even when the rest of the forwards return.
  • Wilson. A bit scrappy but found it heaps. Going to be a player
  • Nas. Another one who was a bit scrappy but nailed his set shot which is something he really needed to improve and he just moves so beautifully
  • Macrae - as advertised. Although, the first half he handball to a confused team mate a bit too quickly. Would love to see him take some of that responsibility and kick it more
  • Kicking 72 points with a make-shift forward line

Wow that was ordinary.

We had too many under done players and others who CGAF. There was something seriously wrong with the attitude of a number of senior players today.

Even with the injured players returning it will take some time for them to get match fit and make a difference. By that time once again our season will be over - its going to be another long and shitty year Sainters!

Our pre season injuries will again ensure we have another below par year.

The guys a top 2 draft pick. Why we surprised he can play?
Given how undermanned the defense was are we really surprised that happened.

Anyway on to next week. Would like to see Hammer get a crack for a full game in the backline. He is not going to make it as a forward.

Cordy out. Owens in.

Jones out. Boxshall in.

Clark out, Stocker in. We need some damn bulk in the side ffs.

Keeler in, Marshall out. Needs another week.
