If we drafted him we would have had him trim down to maintain running capacity, played him in defence at Sandy for a season or two and intermittently given him a few games at AFL level rotating between forward, defence and ruck. He also would have copped some stress fractures in the pre seasons due to the amount of running and probably wouldn't have cracked 20 senior games total yet.
LOL. So true.

I miss the Gehrig and Hamill days when we were actually intimidating.

We have been soft for so long now.

My immediate take-aways.

1) I couldn’t make sense of the positional selections. Is Lyon doing this? Caminiti is useless as a forward and was beaten down back too. Sorry, he hasn’t improved at all since I first saw him.
2) Hill started on bench? but mid first quarter got into a good position to receive and had his arms torn out of his shoulders sockets by an Adelaide defender. No free kick. Certain shot in goal missed. Then he disappeared again only to surface late.
3) Hunter Clark looked cooked within 10 minutes of being subbed on
4) NAS should be a half-forward not a defender.
5) the “not 15 metres rule is arbitrarily used. NAS kicked 8 metres ti an Adelaide defender and he was paid the mark. Later several more ‘not15’s were used against us
6) Ro not good. A bunch of em not good enough.
7) Who was the big lanky player down back who moved in slow motion attempting to stop an Adelaide player from pouncing on it and goaling? I assumed Cordy but maybe wrongly. Fair dinkum it looked like it was AI seeing how slow he was.
7) long season coming up.

It's really concerning that our entire strategy seems to be based around running more than the opposition....like other, more talented teams aren't going to train as hard as they can (and actually manage to find a balance where a third of the team isn't injured before the season starts)

It's not an ideal start to the season but a loss like that was on the cards missing so many of our best 22 players away from home.

Hopefully we're more competitive at home against Geelong next week but we may only get Owens back from our best 22 players.

I would also like to see Boxshall and Keeler given a crack next week too, Hall is the only debutant that deserves to keep his spot.

Some of our older players don't deserve to keep their spots either like Hill, Cordy, Byrnes and Jones but we can't replace them all.

I'd argue that we can and should replace the latter three. Hill has runs on the board and I'd give him another chance.

Cordy - Caminiti moves back
Byrnes - Stocker in, O'Connell/Clark to the wing
Jones - Boxshall

I'm not over-reacting... much... I expect us to come last this year, and only comfort in hoping for a good Pick One in the draft. Welcome to the Saints!

That was pretty much as expected. Five minutes in I tipped a 100+ point loss so I suppose there's a positive in that.
The AFL early season fixturing (with the emphasis on fix) has conspired with an untimely slew of injuries to almost guarantee that our season is pretty much over before it has a chance to start.
So a lack of competitiveness due to experience and talent is forgivable but when it's due to effort and commitment it is not.
Among the many head-scratchers are:

Why play Marshall as pretty much a permanent forward when he was obviously underdone and probably still carrying an injury?

Why substitute one of the kids who we need to get games into and who was at least having a dip when a number of more senior players would have been a better option?

According to various reports I've read and heard, Travaglia was not selected because he still needs work on the defensive elements of his game. If that is the criteria for selection then most of the team would struggle to be picked.
A lot of teams this round have picked their top end draft picks but not us. Our debutants were the opposite.

NWM has, as others have mentioned, been taking the piss so far this pre-season and it carried into this game. Constantly hanging on the to ball for too long and then trying the impossible kick under high pressure. It smacks of smart-assery. I love his talent but if his heart is not in the place then I hope the club gets the maximum return for him leaving. But with our track record he'll probably walk out via the pre-season draft for nothing.

This is already feeling like a repeat of last season. Terrible early season followed by a late rally that achieves nothing except false hope and a diminished draft hand.
