Tom McCarthy being pumped up on AFL- gettables, as a pick 1 chance in the MSD.
He’s certainly been one that plenty of VFL watchers have been on for a while.
Said it earlier in the season he reminds me a bit of Durham during his time on our VFL list. Tallish winger/hb, who has great speed/endurance and a long boot. Starting to play more midfield time too, which only adds to his appeal
oh FFS, but not unexpected, an absolute gun

so it happens again, Melbourne and Carlton will strip us of both Raso and Mccarthy is my prediction

such an annoying system, you understand these players would take an AFL chance, even with Carlton if they had to, but as a supporter, there is just no point investing in your affiliated VFL team.

It would be nice if there was some sort of matching system. Or you could auto rookie your own second tier players, providing they had been passed over in the ND.

But we will have an early pick, so we should be able to get one of our guys….unless we rate someone else higher.

We won't be ahead of Carlton, they will smash West Coast and probably North as well the following week and get rolling. Melbourne is more interesting if they lose to Essendon this week, being a slow team we should play well against them. But they will probably beat us and we will be 17th or 18th. That gives us 1 of the 2 and we don't even have a pick at all at the moment.

I do agree that Bauer has been a tad disappointing so far but watching agenda setters last night and up popped this stat.

Is that right?

He has missed a couple of gimmes in front, wonder how our thoughts would be if he had converted.

He finds space well for those marks, but he doesn't find a lot of the footy, so he really does need to be converting at a very high rate. He needs to take whatever chances he's given, if Faull or Fawcett come in and do well, his spots gone and he may never get it back.

So Samson was 2nd best on ground and OHB probably played his best ever game.

Gonna be farkin annoyed if they bring in Colina this week....
yeah ohb is the clear stand out between the cat b boys imo, has some genuine midfield craft about him. if we take cdt i'd cut them both eoy though, just too many giants. dont think cdt will be one of those talls that take 5 years to be competitive, he's huge.

I think we need to let Colina play some footy before dismissing him out of hand. He has played two senior games of footy ever off any sort of proper preparation, and just missed two whole years. He should have a very steep improvement curve.

Fully agree OHB looks way ahead at this stage, he looks quite good gathering up the ball and feeding it out. Colina is probably the more physical of the two though and Richmond like their rucks to have a physical presence. Will be interesting to watch these guys over the course of the season, presumably rotating in and out of the VFL team, also presumably competing for one list spot.

VFL report many good performances from our AFL & VFL listed players

VFL Report: Round 3

Richmond VFL coach Jake Batchelor provides a summary of how the Tigers’ players performed in last Saturday's Round 3 win over Brisbane at the Swinburne Centre.

The Richmond VFL side remained undefeated with a win over Brisbane last Saturday. Here's how coach Jake Batchelor assessed the performance of each player.

Samson Ryan (23 disposals, nine marks, 16 hit-outs, six clearances, one goal)

“Competed really strongly in the ruck against Henry Smith. Gave away a few free kicks, which took a bit of the shine off his performance, but he was solid in the air, got forward well, and followed up strongly around the ground.”

Tom McCarthy (23 disposals, five marks, seven tackles)

“Played across half back all game and kept creating run and drive. His seven tackles and efforts at ground level in the defensive half really stood out. His work rate is noticeable right now.”

Mutaz El Nour (21 disposals, four marks, four tackles)

“He showed great stability in the backline, both in the air and on the ground. It’s great to see his growth as the games go on.”

Nick Collier (21 disposals, four marks, five tackles)

“Another step up at half back. He’s continuing to really find that balance between dropping back in support and pushing forward to contribute to our attack. He’s a good ball-user and makes great decisions.”

Austin Johnson (20 disposals, one mark, one tackle)

“Also lined up at halfback. His run and carry is so important to us, and he's making really sound decisions both with the ball and defensively.”

Tom McKenzie (20 disposals, three marks, six tackles, one goal)

“In his second game for us, he brought real aggression. His contested game is strong at the moment. There are a few defensive choices to keep refining, but he makes our midfield group look powerful.”

Hugo Ralphsmith (19 disposals, two marks, five tackles)

“Hugo ran his backside off up and down the wing all day — huge work rate. He showed leadership and played with controlled aggression in the contest when it was needed. Great to have him back out there.”

Lachlan Wilson (19 disposals, four marks, 11 tackles, three clearances)

“Arguably one of our most important contributors. Collected 10 contested possessions, a couple of clearances, and 11 tackles. Always puts his head over the footy, and that’s what we love about him.”

Jacob Koschitzke (18 disposals, eight marks)

“Played a really effective system-based game. Beat a quality opponent in Darcy Gardiner across four quarters and had nine intercept possessions. He’s getting to the right spots and putting his hand up for AFL selection.”

Thomas Sims (17 disposals, five marks, six tackles, 10 hit-outs, one goal)

“He’s getting better every week. Took on some ruck time and clunked three contested marks in big packs, which was really impressive. Also showed great defensive chasing efforts, which are rare for key talls.”

Nick Guiney (16 disposals, five marks)

“Another strong outing. Led the team in intercept possessions, and was composed with the ball. He positions himself well and really understands team defence which makes him a valuable system player.”

Campbell Gray (14 disposals, four marks, two tackles)

“Produced his first full four-quarter performance this season. Showed his aerial skills, and his work at ground level, especially his one-two efforts, were strong. He’s continuing to put his hand up for AFL selection.”

Liam George (14 disposals, five tackles, three clearances)

“Started on the wing for three quarters and brought a real defensive mindset. Shifted inside in the last quarter and laid some crucial tackles. Nice positional variety from ‘Georgie’.”

Sam Toner (14 disposals, four marks)

“Played forward again, and is still working on finding the right balance between offensive and defensive running, and when to stay involved around the contest. When he does, he's a dangerous player and continues to improve.”

Harry Scott (12 disposals, four marks, three tackles)

“Now into his fourth or fifth week on the wing and becoming very dependable. Strong GPS numbers and showing good flexibility between inside and outside roles.”

Oliver Hayes-Brown (12 disposals, 18 hit-outs, three clearances)

“Has been showing rapid improvement lately. His ruck craft is developing well. Had 100% efficiency on his 11 handballs. He finds targets, moves through tackles well, and adds a unique look to our midfield group.”

Massimo Raso (11 disposals, three marks, three tackles, three goals)

“Started like a rocket, kicking three early goals. Still working on balancing contest involvement versus staying engaged around the ball as a mid-forward, but we love what he brings to the group.”

“Improved his team play, staying out of the contest when needed and focusing on defensive support. Phil is an exciting talent who brings great aerial presence and physicality.”

Jasper Alger (10 disposals, three marks, one goal)

“Didn’t quite cash in on the scoreboard but was throwing himself at everything. Needs to tweak when to go aerial versus staying at ground level, but there’s a real weapon in him we want to keep encouraging.”

Josh Smillie (10 disposals, three tackles)

“Great to see him out there. Played around a half and got through well. Gave away a free early on through sheer intent, just lacked technique, but threw his body around fearlessly. He’s a big boy and didn’t hold back. He’ll be better for the hit-out and I'm looking forward to him getting more minutes this week.”

Jonty Faull (nine disposals, three marks, two goals)

“Never seen a key forward initiate contact as consistently as he does. Earned a free for it and constantly brings the ball to ground. He’s a great teammate.”

Mohammed Yassine (seven disposals, three marks, two goals)

“As a high half-forward, Moey brings great energy and speed. Got on the end of a brilliant team goal. Still refining his stoppage structure and finding that attack versus defence balance, but we’re loving what he’s shown so far.”

Maurice Rioli (two disposals, one tackle, one goal)

“The stats might not jump out, but he played a half as our AFL carry-over emergency and did his job well. Applied pressure, chased hard after turnovers, and is setting the tone for defensive effort and intent. No doubt, the scoreboard impact will come for Maurice.”

Interesting comments about Koschitzke and Gray, they should be keeping the likes of Miller and Trainor on their toes.

Interesting as well with mature VFL recruits Moi Moi and McKenzie, they are needing to work on the defensive and system aspects of their games. If they can get that right I think we can see McKenzie in particular really adds something to our chances of winning VFL games. He looked really good winning and using the ball on the weekend, a big step up from the previous game where I think he was returning from injury. Moi Moi looked a lot better this week as well.

Nick Collier may be one to keep an eye on, he reminds me a little of Sinclair for the Saints. Pretty sure he is only about 20yo, definitely 21yo max. Interesting I read Collier is the grandson of Collingwood legend Albert Collier. Not sure that would be right, maybe more likely great-grandson.

Nick Guiney has been playing really well this year. Has been winning some big balls back for us and using it really well on the rebound.

It clearly won’t be long before Ralphsmith is back in the AFL team. One more game max I would think but decent chance he replaces someone like Sonsie this week.

The other one that caught my eye from a future perspective was Sims. Jake points out he took 3 big contested pack marks, which is a lot. He did a bad turnover by foot in the middle of the ground at one point but instantly put in a massive chase giving a 20 odd metre start and was able to catch up to the ball in that passage. Batchelor refers to his defensive chasing efforts. The club will absolutely love him if that is standard.

He also notes Faull’s competitive nature again. We could end up with a very exciting forward line with these guys looking a lot more fierce competitively than a lot of other highly rated young key forwards. Adding them to the likes of Armstrong, Lalor, Campbell, Hotton, Mansell we could be in for some fun watching our forwards placing opposition defences under all sorts of pressure. Just like old times. 😁

I know. Imagine Colina played....
Smith was immense had everything defending kicking goals rucking well marking. Probably best individual performance I have seen for a long time. Could do worse than try to snag him if they in for it.

ngl I did not notice he played a half, thought he got taken off right after his first minute goal lmao

33 hit outs 30 disposals 3 goals 5 behind
Awesome job .same draft as Ryan
Maybe a straight swap
Smith is from Adelaide

Geez a future backline like this excites me (even from next year):

Gibcus - Miller - Brown
Trainor- Balta - Gray

Bench Tresize/Blight (ideally we never play Short ever again in the backline from next year).

Tall accross the board, a lot that seem to be fast enough to man up smalls at times and tonnes of intercept power

i like it. that halfback line works on so many levels. both gray and trainor very athletic, top marks, beautiful kicks.
people might say that back lines too tall but theres 3 of 6 players their capable of handling a small forward and if it's bombed in chances are one of them marks it anyway.
