Reminiscent of our pre season intra club match sim & GWS practice game where we looked great vs absolutely minimal to zero pressure!

Exactly. Couldn't believe people were getting excited after that game thinking it meant something...

Hopefully, don't make the same mistake this time.

Best thing for us to do is go by blocks of games.

r1-r4: terrible ball movement, too many senior players with too many undisciplined plays, extremely wasteful i50, horrible second halves...

r5-r8: let's see... so far, they've done all they can do which is belt a non-competitive team in a bruise free encounter. Next week I expect that we'll at least have a more competitive opponent, but we should be a class above and win by about 3-5 goals.

We've done well from those ex-Sydney guys. Georgie obviously... And how we miss Nic Newman.

This highlights our coaching issue IMO

Newman is a heck of a player but in a good structure we should be able to plug and play many players. We seem to really suffer when losing good players as we rely too much on ability over structure

Look at how many players Lions lost last year that were best 22. Coleman for example was seen as a major loss but they covered him quite easily

This year they have lost Daniher yet are still playing well and winning games

Edit: they were 0-4 weren’t they?
Coleman as an example was plugged by an elite kick in the very experienced Zorko - we don’t have that for NN (debutant in Jeff is our replacement).
We should have had leaders like MM step up but that’s not been the case, which is on the player. Takes a low pressure game to resume transmission of what was required rounds 1-4.

Players haven’t been doing their bit so far.

I understand your point. I think it’s both

Not quite 0-4, they were 0-3.

Underperforming players like Gov have been allowed to keep their spot which was a big liability for us in the first 4 rounds...

Gov cost us 10-12 goals, Doc would have cost us 6-8, Haynes cost us about 4 in round 1 alone...

I 100% agree it is on these players to be accountable and step up... but the coach must also do his part to get that out of them. If selection is automatic for them, then where will they get the urgency to lift their game?

Standards need to be set and enforced.

We actually haven’t been that far off in the games so far vs the opposition we’ve faced (2 more wins on the board for RFC & WBD).

Reckon the inefficiencies that we’ve thrown up have been our downfall and obv the 2nd half fadeouts (= part of the inefficiencies as well).
Inaccuracy again yesterday to start the game.

Skills (incl picking the right choices) and is fitness a concern??

Plug some holes with more efficient skills & smarts and hopefully we can bring more W’s to the table.

This is where I really disagree with most

I don’t think we have been close. Yes, the scores haven’t had much between them but we play an ugly contested game that makes it hard to score. Our pressure has been very good. We are trying

Our games are always close but in reality we aren’t ever much of a chance. The efforts of Cripps Hewett Weitering keep us in it

My take is we are lot further away than most think. Just how I see it (unfortunately)

Wouldn't it be great to have the speed or ball use of the likes of Wilmott, Zorko, 2 very good KPDs

No objection from me on any of those players but Haynes has since solidified his position & has been building.

MM has always provided conditional aspect to his defending/contests, still evident yesterday but his kicking highlighted an important skill we lack (pity about the oppo applying pressure) prob hence he has remained.
Personally would have given him a blast many times over but don’t think coaching is like that now.

Doc is cooked and he is a main culprit for our ladder position with his impact on games when he’s near the ball or shanking it! He’s got some credits piled up in the bank however.

There’s a bit both ways here. Back them in or replace them.
I was/am for the latter for MM & Doc but the coaches have given them a reprieve based on their previous output (expecting players to rise to the occasion on their own account), experience, and able replacement/s.

NN has joined the coaching ranks, what would be his opinion on the players remaining in the team from the players / back 6 perspective?
Unfortunately Jeff was unavailable early on as well.
Lewis Young has doubts.
Boyd unfit?

We’re defending well (by the numbers) & will want to keep that baseline. Cripps raised that as well post-match.

If we can have an A-grade defensive game but then tidy up the inefficiencies that are causing our undoing (hitting targets, choosing the right options, missing goals etc) while getting the right mix on the field, we can certainly redeem with scope for improvement. Players providing glaring basic errors shouldn’t be accepted/continued, experienced heads at that.

To the contrary, more so the efforts of others have left us in the position we are in on the W/L column. Looking at MM & Doc here, Haynes (R1 + R3 late with OH), ZW.

Had 16 CBAs, 1 less than the Dogs game
Again with you being all one or all the other. He's still always going to have CBAs. He's ****ing Sam Walsh. It's good seeing him not follow every contest and be more outside. That's truth and that's what happened this week.

The truth was he wasn't tagged as heavily and as well as other opposition

His % of CBAs went from 61 last week to 59, not an indicator to bizarrely claim that Walsh played on a wing

Don’t disagree.

SOS is a sensational defender. Brilliant one on one player. Brilliant ball yser. Should have been there a long time ago.
His most important asset is what's between the ears...a mindset of hating to be beaten and saving scores at all costs
And defenders need that in spades
Please do not move him. I'm sure JW is enjoying having someone like him around

PS. Harry OFarrell seems to have the same traits from what I've seen

Yeah wouldn’t be opposed to trying Gov forward again myself but I just reckon they will want his kicking skills from the back half.

MSD might see us looking at a 3rd tall forward option now depending on severity of injury.
I’d ignore position, find a kid with pace and reasonable footy smarts and skills.

Take away the opposition and the lack of midfielder defence, there were some nice positives.

Durdin - had a great game, just needs consistency & his body to hold up. It was nice for once to see a small forward staying on the ground at a marking contest.

Carroll - made a couple mistakes that he will learn from but I thought he did a great job for a first game. He had some nice disposal to. Hopefully he stays in the team

Walsh - was nice to see him playing the position that he suits. He had a great game and I hoping this is a turn around in form

A couple of worthy mentions - Hewitt (he'd have to be close to our best player this season), Cotts (not a usual fan, but he had some nice passes in the forward line) and White (he never stopped trying and buzzing around. I'm glad he got his goal)

Oh and I thought Mott's actually looked ok in the midfield. Whether he's like that against a quality opposition i don't know but he looked ok

While I was staring blankly at the TV in the last qtr, my son made exactly the same observation

Wow, who would've thought we'd trial a banged up Cripps to the fwd line and an out-of-sorts Motlop in the middle

I don't care about the opposition or the minute sample size but please Voss, give us more of these amazingly creative moves :D:D

Here's another one...rotate Williams and Boyd HB and HF. Both good kicks who might hit a target I50

Hasn't Motlop been taking some CBAs in all games this year?

Good win and I know this sounds harsh, but it should’ve been a 100+ point win. The conditions were obviously difficult with the heat and the loss of players, Big H and Kemp.

Amazing to see Walsh back to his best. You can see his power running is back and he looks better at picking the ball off his toes, at speed.

I really hope Motlop and Durdin have a sustained run together and Fantasia can get back to fitness too (he looked like a jet in preseason) because our lack of small forwards has been a huge problem.

Cottrell’s run and delivery into the forward line was sublime. His kicking skills are under rated. He is also a terrific role player.

I’d swing Gov forward and bring Pitto straight in (suited against Xerri’s bash and crash style) and have TDK play up forward a bit next week. Obviously this may cover the loss of Kemp and Big H.

Silvagni is now a lock as our key back to help Weiters. JSOS is rarely beaten one on one, plays with the desperation of his father, rarely misses targets and makes good decisions.

Hewett would probably be leading our B&F at the moment. Barely put a foot wrong. Great defensive mid, who racks it up.

Can see why there’s been some wraps for Carroll. Has a deadly left foot and is tough - loved his huge tackle! Nice height too for a running HBF - 190cm. His future looks bright.

I can’t see Evans pushing White out either, as he seems to know where to get to as a small forward better and shows a bit of speed.

It’s hard to get too excited about the win. WC look dreadful and our dominance in most stats shows how much they are struggling.
