Keeler out for Steele cost us the game.

Just kidding....but it didn't help much either. Steele looked totally down on confidence - not sure what he's carrying, or if it's just a lack of match practice. Even when he got the ball, he lacked focus and intensity. Some sloppy work by hand and foot.

Just so many skill errors, we were pretty lucky not to go down by 10+ goals in the end.

Appreciated Nas and Windhager's efforts all day. Some good work by Wood, Stocker and Wilkie.

Hill was one of a few who got better in the last quarter. It was important in the end, because instead of trying to hammer the win home, the Giants kind of had to shut things down.

Aside from the lack of % damage, it also gives us a bit of a positive heading into next week. After playing in draining (but wet, rather than hot) conditions against GWS early a year or 2 ago, we struggled for a few weeks afterwards. Was a bit worried of a repeat of that during this game. We might need to rotate a player or 2 to freshen up a bit after the long stint away from home and the heat.

I thought they showed a bit today. GWS are a top 3 team. We are not. That ground demands very clean, fast and precise disposal. GWS are ahead of us in that. But we stuck in and the scoreline was respectable.
GWS set up as if they were going to win every contest ... especially when we went forward .... they moved the ball far to easily out of our backline at times after winning it back

Helps if you have a gun backline .... Richmond did in their Premiership years and you can anticipate winning back the ball and set up accordingly to move it out quickly by handball or foot

Thought Garcia showed a lot today and first time I've been properly impressed by TT, his hands consistently in close were quick and precise and his attack on the ball/man was there until the end. Max Hall just can't be dropped, and I liked how Mitchito worked himself into the game.
I think Byrnes did a lot to silence a few people today, yes his erroneous shanks were there but so was he, all the time. All in all, getting the last quarter back to a respectable score line was pleasing. Steele is hard to see his influence at the best of times but as others have said, hopefully he can work himself back into form quickly. I liked how Windy battled all day. Tbh there's not anyone I can say truly had a schocker, yes Macrae was down but Bedford did a number on him and you'd have hoped Steele could have stepped up.

I won't assign score ratings for today. Just straight up pass or fail:

Pass:
Sinclair
Nas
Windy
Byrnes
Garcia
Sharman
Wood
Hill
Wilkie
Hall
Stocker

Fail:
Steele
Marshall
Wilson
Macrae
Caminiti
Higgins
Owens
Travaglia
Hastie
Jones
Webster
Collard
Far too many senior player in that bottom list. I wouldn’t have hill in the Pass list. He was awful when it mattered. Came to life in the last but all too late.

People will defend Byrnes on that showing..

But getting the ball isn't enough.

I like his heart and endeavour, but he just isn't up to it.

Our senior players all lowered their colours today.

Though still plenty to like, we've become so much more dependable under Ross
He did ok, but had little support. If a few more of our players showed Byrnes' heart and endeavor today, then we might have got a win.

Having to use the old back up account because the app has sh1t itself.

Pretty much went as predicted, we are just not at there level....yet.

Nas just a pure freak getting better with every game! If he starts kicking goals regularly he'll win a Charlie.

Really missed a genuine KPF today.

Loved Garcia's game.

There's something about Max Hall, he's got something special I reckon.

Steele becomes a massive liability at times, he needs to push forward and play the high half fwd role at times to get some easy ball and gain his confidence back.

Serious question - IF Nas decides he is leaving, what is he realistically worth trade and $ wise?

Trying to read his body language and really really hope he stays. God damn.

If I had no choice to let Nas go (and I absolutely would not want to do that) it would have to be a top 5 pick. But his value is going up by the week I reckon.

Small ground, hard to find uncontested space.

Contested posessions.

Tom Green 16
Josh Kelly 15

Jack Macrae 12

Kieren Briggs 11

Jack Steele and Mitch Owens 9 each.
Windhager , Garcia , Sinclair 8 each Sam Taylor 8

So there's Steele , struggling but still one of our best in contests.
We really need to find more, maybe Phillipou is one.

I honestly saw us struggling today due to our pressing nature of gameplan. Just felt like it wasn't going to work in the hot conditions we played today for 4 quarters. so I'd knew we'd get carved up at some point., but really encouraging we kept trying till the end. I think if it was a cooler day we would have been much closer but GWS just too good for us at this stage. Over worked us in those two middle quarters, their skills seemed less fumbly and better execution. Thought NWM and Garcia were pretty good. Especially putting Nasiah in the middle in the last quarter seemed to worked better than the slow windhager/steele/mccrae combo. McCrae is excused of having a poor game today considering he has carried us the previous 4, however Steele really needs to do more. Nevertheless good experience for the young players out there today against a quality opposition.
I actually think it was the ground's dimension's that didn't suit our game style rather than the heat.
After all, we did run out the game pretty well.
And a few of our senior players were off their game, didn't help too.

A very "meh" feeling after this one. Not smashed, but game was done at 3/4 time. Felt like our forward line struggled to get going all day, yet we still somehow kicked 12 goals. GWS clearly the better list and age profile to be contending, but the young kids (Windhager, Garcia, Nas) really fought it out all day.

Disappointed without really being THAT disappointed. So long as we keep fighting our way through games for 4 quarters it's hard to complain too much. King, Pou, Howard all unavailable, that's a best 22 player from the middle, back and forward line missing. 3-2 with that scenario is not bad.

Pretty much agree with everything written.

We tried but were outclassed by a genuine Premiership contender. We are a 6 to 10 team depending on injuries & fixturing (ours is not good)

What killed us was poor disposal (mainly by foot) when not under genuine pressure. Scoring chains broke down again & again and GWS much cleaner on turnover.

Hopefully RTB’s message is that’s the level we need to get to - keep working hard!

I liked the fact that when the game looked like being blown out in the 3rd qtr, Lyon had the guts to run Garcia, Trav and Windy as our mids at the centre bounce then ran NAZ and Chito through the mids in the 4th. A great learning experience and I am sure Lyon learnt a fair bit.
Our experienced mids in Macrae, Steele and Jones were well beaten, Sinclair with 26 our best but always under pressure, only NAZ really got off the leash, Hill was ok but his disposal left much to be desired going inside 50.
Speaking of disposals, our missed targets and turnovers looked so much worse because GWS was so clean and so well set up. Some of the unforced kicking errors were very bad.
I liked the fact we tried to run really hard in the last. Hot weather, game won, GWS drop intensity a couple of %, and us running out the game resulted in a 5 goal to O last qtr. Again some good learnings. Keep playing running hard, a fit team and things can happen.
All in all well beaten, but not disgraced. Some promising signs from a bunch of youngsters and players like Sharman and Stocker just coming into their prime.

Could have been better, could have been worse.

Hopefully our midfield performance isn't indicative of what we will see the next fortnight with dogs and lions upcoming. Backing us to respond like we did after Adelaide. Get us back under the roof.

Probably need to bring a tall back in to give Owens a chance and Henry if ready.

If Steele had Byrnes's game today, we'd be lauding him

23d (4 contested)
6 marks
10 handballs
1 goal and 6 score assists

There are a fair few others to single out before Ronnie

We had some really good patches against quality, hardened opposition. The third quarter steam train killed the game off which is probably where our review will largely focus. That could have been an 80 pointer easily, but we kept showing signs till the end. That’s a small sign of growth in itself.

Sam Darcy might kick eleventy billion goals next week though which is my primary concern looking ahead!!
