Contract trigger for an important Roo

Valuable and versatile North Melbourne defender Aidan Corr is poised to reach a contract trigger that will extend his stay at the club until the end of next year.

A turf toe injury kept Corr to only two games in his first season at Arden Street in 2021, but he has since played at least 19 games each year and the first two of 2025.

The 30-year-old arrived from the Giants as a restricted free agent on a five-year deal and his 195-centimetre height and speed have enabled him to play on various forwards in a North defence where he has carried significant responsibility at times.

One Roo who will have to wait to discover his fate is forward-ruck Callum Coleman-Jones, who still faces another couple of months out with an Achilles injury. Talks about extending his contract will not kick off until he is back playing.

I wish it was reported more when players have triggers in their deals for an extra year

A lot of the time you don’t find out til they are about to or hit the trigger

happy for corr it will be well deserved

I think he would have been extended by one season regardless of the trigger if he stays on the park

Apples has been an interesting recruit. Not sure whether he's a pass or a bust??? I suppose the jury is still out.

I probably wouldn't go as far as saying that.

He's had a difficult role in a poor side, but he's not exactly been great himself for long periods.

It's not simply been defending either. Just brain headed decisions, or poor free kicks etc when we've needed a leader. As well as the initial injuries.

Given he signed on very decent money for his output as a FA and this a trigger linked with that contract, I imagine he's going to be getting well overs for this additional year.

The club owes him nothing imo. He had a good patch at the end of last year, a pretty decent game on the weekend. He probably owes the club another 50 like them imo.

Logue is in a similar boat at this point.

If we liquid paper his DOB to something around 2007 would that change your mind?

If that is the one where JVR looked like he was tasered by 3 Coppers, then Corr is forgiven. Not the first forward to play for a free, and won’t be the last. Souva at times is a pretty good exponent of the half forward pike with a twist entering and leaving a marking contest.
It was a lurch that even Matthew Lloyd would have been proud of. Was under the ball and no chance to mark, felt Corr's breath on his neck and went for it.

Wasn't it a pretty horrible toe infection?

It seems that guys like Corr and LMAc look substantially better when playing behind a midfield that plays as a cohesive unit and puts defensive pressure on the opposition. Who would have thought?
Shocked to be reading this...

Thats correct but our defenders have lost a lot 50/50 contests in the last few years
More than they have won.
Probably to do with confidence and consistency of the back 6 as a unit

Just maybe if the average contest is 55/45 in their favour rather than the reverse, it makes a big difference.

No Archer or Logue in there, but both FOS and Tucker were really good in that unit. It is fantastic having the completion for spots to see who is in the best 23 each week.

I’ve been very critical of him over the years, but towards the end of last year and all of this year I feel sorry for him.

Expected to cover all of Comben or Logue’s poor positioning while also have to take on match ups that are probably a bit beyond him.

He battles hard, but man he is up against either what’s around him.

I like him, with decent support he’s a very good player.

Reliable ball in hand, competitive, I think people are way too harsh on him.
People should direct their anger at the Backline Coach, Selection Committee and Conditioning Team. Agree that Corr has been solid and on a hiding to nothing. This is the problem.
  • Logue being picked and not fit, not in form and really just a bog average AFL player since we picked him up.
  • Comben cannot defend and has more brain farts than Corr use to.
  • Support cast of Daniel/Fisher/McKercher who let small forwards draw lots to see who will crumb and kick the next goal.
  • Curnow got looked after yesterday per usual

I reckon I've thought he was okay in 3-5 of his 60-odd games for us.

Bringing him in as our key-piece full back was a terrible terrible move.
He's been ok or better for way more games than that.

Has the knack of committing a hand-wringing error at inopportune moments, but he's a solid defender, even if he's currently guilty of getting caught in no man's land like the rest of the team. People are seriously blind to what we have upfield. We wouldn't have fared much better with Weitering in Corr's place, such is the lack of interest upfield in applying any sort of defensive pressure

He tries really hard but he lacks the physical attributes to go with the best forwards in the game consistently.
