He needs 5 weeks to prove he's not at the level, he obviously lacks confidence, and very likely ability at the level but give him a good swing at it.
He won’t gain confidence if he is dropped after just one game. It’ll be interesting to see how it goes

enjoy the win, you probably stuck a knife into taranto, hopper, macca, dow and co in previous posts and all have contributed to our future and our couple of wins so far. ryan needs to play a serious second fiddle to nank and allow nank rests and management. end of year ryan will be judged....not now.
ive been on TT and hops back since they got to the club, all admit it was a good game by both of them, they need that sort of grit to be effective. still think theyll be overtaken, but love the fight they put up. credit to them.

Samson Ryan: Foot, 2-3 weeks

“Samson Ryan has come out of the game with a bit of a foot complaint, a fascia plantar complaint, so he will probably miss the next 2-3 weeks,” Serpell said.

“He will get some scans on that over the next couple of days, and we will get a picture on that.”

Don't think he will ever be a starting ruckman, but he is fine as a back up ruck and depth option. At least he has the versatility to play forward, they say talls are always 4 years away from being 4 years away. I really don't see the problem with keeping him around, saves us having to go and pinch a back up from another club and don't think it'd be prudent to over index on ruck stocks. Thinks Sims should be ahead of him in the pecking order though

we could easily give simms a taste this week. he has such a low bar to hurdle to be our preferred back up ruckman there's no real risk attached. we dont want simms to be 25 and still playing like an 18 year old, he's a lump of a lad now give him a shot.

Personally i don’t think he is currently good enough as a backup. I really don’t want to be disrespectful to Samson but i don’t know how you feel he’s preforming to the required level?

I'm not sure what people were exactly expecting when Ryan needed to ruck against Witts when better, more experienced rucks struggle with Witts. Hell, I feel like Nank rarely has a good game against Witts, and was probably well beaten in the ruck against Witts for most of the game last night.
Interesting take 😲
You realise it’s the AFL right?
Ryan has to play against Witts … and Gawn, Grundy, English, Marshall, Xerri, etc.
If he can’t compete against them, there’s no use being there
Poor Samson, he had to ruck against someone 😲

Samson looks like a nice kid, but gee.....honestly can't see him anywhere near good enough to play AFL atm.

DID he take one mark for the game? he gets pushed around way too easily....his best attribute are his shots a goal, when he gets then, but he needs to take a mark for that.

He plays like he is 160cm and 60kg. Never seen a player play like he is half his size.

Just dont know where to get him some mongrel, doesnt need to be like Lynch or Nank, he just needs to play like his size.

Get him a 4 week block of MMA training........boxing, anything.

His foot clearly slips
True, but watch the skill error right at the start where he tries to use his body to block using both hands, but misses. That is an error in his craft and he sadly doesn’t have the bulk to use his body effectively. Granted he was up against a seasoned opponent, but I haven’t really seen much improvement from him during his time at the club. It’s sad, but true.

My point is about expectation vs reality for what Ryan can do as a ruck/fwd. Is anyone asking him to be the main ruck? If not, let's not judge him as if he is one.

I'm just pointing out that in Ryan's first game back, he's up against Witts, one of the most experienced rucks in the AFL that (like I point out) even Nank struggles against (and Nank has done well in the past against the likes of Gawn and Grundy).

More often than not, your 2nd ruck will be against the opposition's 2nd ruck, and Ryan at the very least matched Read's influence at ruck contests. We tried something a bit different in that last quarter (which I don't actually necessarily mind, but did mean that Nank was stuck on the bench for longer than we probably wanted).

Also, it's not like we haven't seen Ryan do well against those rucks you mention (albeit in patches). I have clear memories of Ryan equalising, if not beating, Tim English back when English was still a good ruck back 2 or 3 seasons ago. English was giving Nank a bath out of the middle (Dogs had 6 centre clearances vs our 2), and it wasn't until Ryan went into the middle did we actually feel like we weren't being slaughtered from that area of the ground (both the feeling you get from watching the game, as well as off the stats sheet).

Q4 Ryan starting was odd; Ryan staying on for 10 minutes was weird; given the comeback; Ryan even played on after Nank returned. With injured foot. Trainor barely got on the ground.

Do they still use a runner to get messages out there?

This guy is so shit. Free agent ruck and a young drafted needed in next 2 years.
we drafted Sims. Nank's got 2 years? Sweet aint bad, Meek is good.

Cat B Soldo was good. The current 2 rucks OHB etc are just taking dev time into Sims.

Our VFL coach got to manage Sonsie, Kmac2, Smilie. Last qtr none of them in the middle & oppo get run on .

Not odd if you think the decision through.

Nank usually only plays 70-80% of a quarter, and his rotation is usually in the back half of the quarter.

The way I see it, Yze went with Ryan to start the quarter so that Nank plays out the quarter once he comes on, so he won't be stuck on the bench towards the end of the quarter. However, it just so happened that Nank probably was stuck on the bench for a little too long to start the quarter, but you would much rather that than Nank stuck on the bench towards the start of the quarter than at the end of the quarter instead, wouldn't you?

Ryan played probably to give Faull a bit of a rest.

As a neutral and interested observer who watched a bit of this kid before he was drafted, what is apparent to me is that he seems to have gone backwards in some of his best traits in the search of improving his weaknesses, but the improvement hasn't come.

As an 18/19 year old his strengths were his agility for a big man, the way he got around the ground and he was a decent overhead mark (though didn't love contact when it came) - he also had excellent skills and was clean below his knees.

He was also a good centre bounce ruckman if it was an old fashioned jump off, but if a stronger oppo ruck wanted to step across the line and engage, or just around the ground - he struggles in the wrestle.

Now, in the 5 year search for more size and strength in the contest and trying to get better engaging in a wrestle - he seems to have lost all his agility, he spills uncontested marks and he is fumbly below the knees - it would also appear that he has lost any sort of running capacity.

Almost like they are trying to turn him into something he isn't. He is non Nankervis and never will be, nor is he Big Oscar or Jarrod Witts. He is more the athletic running ruckman (like a really really poor mans Dean Cox or the best comparison would be Josh Fraser) - but they are trying to turn him into Darren Jolly, when he is more like a Josh Fraser.

Now Fraser never lived up to the hype, but he had a serviceable 200 game career and had he spent more of his career as a #2 ruck and playing forward - he would have had a much better career than he did getting bashed around as a #1 that wasn't quite up to it.

Samson is Josh Fraser, not Darren Jollly - work on his strengths, he isn't going to overcome the lack of competitiveness and strength around the contest - its clearly both a mental and a physical thing, end of the day some people just aren't wired like that to compete like their life depended on it.
