He's trying to hit the ball carrying arm and knock the ball out (which is what they do now because of the rules around not dump tackling people) but he gets the angle wrong and hits him in the head. It's very reckless under the new rule and will be 4 weeks minimum. But it's not a king hit or a 'dog act'.
That's how I saw it as well. If they still had the classification, IMO it would be reckless. You swing with full force at head level toward the head, then this kind of thing happens. There is a reason you get taught not to use knives or any other sharp object towards your own body, always away in case... Swing toward the head consciously has the possibility of hitting the head built in. Careless is hitting the shoulder and it sliding up.

Haha from the Squarks board:

"I'm not even gutted that we didn't win.

I'm gutted that it's been almost 20 consecutive years of these cockroaches in the top 8. Just fed up with it.

I'd honestly take a few years of Adelaide, Fremantle, Gold Coast and North Melbourne as the top contenders just to see something different."

He's a bit inaccurate but I like the sentiment
Inaccurate? How? Oh I see- about not being gutted that they didn't win.

In defence of Mannagh : Q4 freeze
He got a handball from Jezza expecting a 1-2 run past
Jezza got tackled after disposal... was livid he didn't get a free kick

Also, like the forwards taking their chances at goal
There is very little time to evaluate and dispose
This make all the forwards dangerous around goals
Opponents can't plan to stop a star forward only
as I read through the thread late, I was hoping someone else noticed this. Looked like his plan B got shut down quickly.

I think I saw that a couple of times, where one of our guys got pulled down without or on the way to the ball.

Imo, if the ump stops play for a concussion, and he says the word 'report' he should then send the reported player from the ground immediately.
Something like Union Rugby? A yellow with a review by the bunker for a red?
The problem I have with this is the AFL's track record of systems. :rolleyesv1: They have problems with 15m kicks after all.

Funny ol match of football.

It was very high pressure, but the skill level from both sides was still very poor.

I feel like this match was played on Hawthorns terms, with regards to the pace of the match for the first 3/4, but they still couldn't get over us. They needed the free flow of football and poor turnovers we gave them to catch our defence out of position often, and get shots on goal.

I thought our only real winners in the day were Atkins, Danger, Smith and Holmes at times. Yet we were still being smashed in clearances at some stages.....

I cannot believe that some media are giving mannagh best on ground, he cost us severely on numerous occasions.

A series of defenders got destroyed by Gunston as well....i noticed both sdk and O'Sullivan both playing him particularly poorly at times.

The taking out of Miers was pivotal, I hope Nash gets 4 for that!

Having said all that..... Great result!!!

Harsh on Dempsey. 19 and 2 with 10 contested possessions and some incredibly important touches in there.

Really impressive win in a quality pressure game
Maestro Danger
Moments Cameron
Miers was on fire until cruel Nashing
Dempsey, Humphries, very good contributors
Smith and Holmes ran all day
Bowes and Mannagh did very important things
Atkins solid again
Stanley fought it out
Blicavs solid
Zuthrie strong

Henry needs to get more into contests. Soft game
Great win
Happy 70th birthday Larry!

Both teams were full of errors today, funny hearing hawks fans claim they lost that game and gifted it to us, we were poor ourselves and can play much better. Always happy to claim the 4pts in scrappy games like that.

Thought it was interesting hearing Scott post game with Gerard and Lyon saying he was able to watch most games this long weekend and it was a little depressing seeing the standard some teams are playing at compared to us (I’m thinking Collingwood, PA & WB in particular from this round). Not saying we are bad but I think Scott knows where we’re at and how we’ll have to pick it up quickly over the next month with some big games coming up.

Couple of 6 day breaks with Carlton next week, which 2-3 weeks ago would’ve been a walk in the park but they’ve gained some form and always seem to get up for us, followed by a huge test against the Pies the following week, that’ll show just where we’re at.

Thinks after those 2 we face the giants, power and WB. 1 week at a time I know but big 5 weeks coming up for the Cats, will shape our season.

Errors, and the elephant in the room - selfishness. I called this during the game day thread, but always like to check two full replays (and rewinds) to clarify above the emotions. Managh, Stengle, Clohesy and Cameron all took ill advised shots that should have been passed on to team mates in better position. Last week it was Henry.

Fine when it works, but it seems these shots (misses) are taken by players on the edge, or in quiet form - what does that tell you?
Incoming ball F50, Neale is continuing to play from behind, seems slow to realise he must get front position, does not read the play well, poor reflexes including ground balls, at this moment. Yes, some of them redeemed themselves, but the fact remains, offensively, get your heads up and find someone screaming for it!. Inexperience is not an excuse.

Yup - happened a lot. But I'm certain the coaches will be on to it to get them all into the right mindset.

Just a little thing - James Sicily was diabolically bad. That shot in the last quarter with minutes to go - puts it out on the full. Can you imagine Selwood doing that? Horrible day for him.

I'm not convinced that is it. If he was touch and go he'd have been listed as 'test' not removed from the list as available.
IMO they got spooked by Mullin under doubt as well as Stewart and pulled him and Clohesy.

Since when has Geelong ever not been honest with injury reports though? 😁

I don't see how Henry can stay in the team on current form. Averages less than 9 touches a day less than 1 goal a game. A long way from AFL level

I agree but who really replaces him unless you put sdk forward?

Mannagh kicked a couple clutch goals but I thought hes played far better games, any time an opponent closes down on him he tries that smart arse inside out kick because hes got no left foot, turned it over 5 times I reckon.

Mannagh’s late goal helped but his HTB with Jezza was brutal. Led to two immediate hawks goals. He had time and space to dish the ball but froze.

Can't wait until we get Henry back. The highlighted section is L -> R. Contested Defensive 1v1 (total), Contested 1v1 Loss (total), Contested 1v1 %.

Some very good company Jack was in before getting injured.

Great stat , thanks for positing. Surprising to see Mac Andrew so high. He didn’t look so good against Tigs. Getting Jack and kolo back hopefully soon!

He was in our top 3 players and it's not even questionable.
And yet, many of us are questioning it, so it's clearly questionable.

He had a really bad day in terms of turnovers and pressure moments. He got on the end of a couple of goals, and good for him. But that serious lack of composure we haven't really seen from him before.

I don't think this will be a pattern. The kid is clearly going to be a player. But in order to be one of the best players, you cannot be coughing up the ball 4-5 times like he did. Those mistakes directly lead to opposition goals.

Kicking the sealer really helped his day, but prior to that, his play was very much filled with mistakes, and those awful turnovers in front of 90K people can turn the tide in games.

Not many. A few.

Theres always a few who question everything. I.e. flat earth. Doesnt mean its questionable.

After coming back from the game i nearly choked on my drink after reading someone claim he was selfish today. Would of kicked 5 goals today if he wasnt trying to pass the ball off to much.

I've not seen Scotty delight in a player's antics before like he does Bailey Smith. He can barely contain his glee when politely downplaying Smith's cheeky decisions to the press. You love to see it.

Smith was a huge get for us. Our ability to draw players like him over a sustained period of time continues to stun me in the best way possible. Well done to everyone who set up this culture and to everyone who keeps the culture going. Being a destination club didn't happen by chance.
