Crikey Erasmus would need to improve his kicking but can certainly find the football.
Kicking at AFL is pretty important...

Take the best player available MSD if Tom McCarthy is that player , draft him even as a half back flanker . Hough playing midfield now anyway so a spot for McCarthy in defence.

We simply cannot absorb another player that can't kick.

The Erasmus ship sailed from WC (if he would even consider coming to us) the moment we discovered Baker's disposal is horrible (duh), whilst having admirable best trier values.

We already have to work out how to fit Bo Allen into our side with his dodgy disposals. Clay Hall also not elite.

Our forwards currently have more hope of getting it lace out if those kicking were directed to kick to where they don't expect our fwds to be.

We can 100% afford to lose Ryan.

He simply cannot play a full season.

I believe its primarily due to the compromised standards he is allowed to set for his fitness.

Another who has a higher reputation because of what he did on 29th September 2018....
Not saying we can't afford to lose him but at the moment he is one of the few players currently playing to an AFL standard.
Pressures, chases, tackles and is one of our best decision makers and disposes of the ball.

Not everybody in the side has to be an elite or above average kick. Yes, we do need those players, but we don't need 22 of them. If we consider Erasmus to be better than Hall/Hutchinson, we go after him. If not, we don't.

Disagree.
Our first priority right now is fixing our ability to won contested ball in the middle.
If that means we have to bring in a guy who doesn't have an amazing kick then so be it.

Any player commodity you get cheaply from another club is going to have some warts on it. They are either going to be a bad kick, or slow, or be defensively weak, or lack fitness. If you want somebody who ticks every box then, assuming you can even get them to put their hand up to come to your club, you will be handing over first rounders for them. The challenge is for the coaching staff to try and improve the weakness to the extent that they can and also give the player a role to play and instructions that allows them to minimise the weakness and maximise their strengths.

Which is why I pooh-pooh people wanting SPP & his horrendous kicking.

2 of the 4 flaws you note can be fixed.

With Erasmus, his kicking is unlikely to ever be significantly repaired and on top of this, his decision making is on the slow side (common complaint of the Freo supporters).

He holds on the ball far too long from marking and then on top of this, makes bad target choices (other traits that are hard to break).

I watched Erasmus plenty of times at PSA level when he dominated my son's side, but never thought he would translate to an A or B class AFL player (man amongst boys & Hale firsts were so much better than most of the other schools).

Mind you, I thought Chesser would ultimately be better than him so you can discount my opinion on this as your wish.

The HUN are running a story called

The Harley Reid hunt: Which Victorian club has the best chance of luring the Eagle?

They list by each Victorian Clubby what their best offer could be and their verdict.

Drug Rats
■ Essendon’s two 2025 first-round picks and future first-round pick (2026 or 2027)
VERDICT -
Essendon has the means to deal for Reid at the trade table, and it is likely the Bombers also have the young gun’s interest after he enjoyed his time at the club in 2023. The Bombers want to add bona fide A-graders and will make an aggressive play for the 20-year-old.

Hawks
■ Carlton’s 2025 first-round pick and two future firsts (2026 or 2027)
VERDICT -
If Reid chooses to go, Hawthorn will be near the top of his list, but the Bombers have a more appealing draft hand for the Eagles. The Hawks would need the nomination as Reid’s preferred club to have a chance – and they are well placed to get it.

Cats
■ Geelong’s 2025 first-round pick and two future first-round selections.
VERDICT -
This would be a daring list management move even for Geelong. Would it force a squeeze on the Cats’ list they would consider unnecessary as they continue to regenerate at a healthy pace? It’s unlikely they would sell the farm (a metaphorical farm, not Rhys Stanley’s) to get Reid.

Tigers
■ Richmond’s two 2025 first-round selections plus a swap of later picks
VERDICT -
If they can continue to avoid blowout losses and pinch a few more wins, the Tigers and coach Adem Yze might be able to sell the vision to Reid. Richmond would need to show him it is in a starkly different position to the Eagles in their own arduous rebuild.

Pies
Darcy Cameron, 2026 first-round pick and 2027 first-round pick
VERDICT -
Collingwood will ask the question of West Coast, but the Magpies could be asked a big one in return – it’s unlikely they could satisfy the Eagles with draft picks alone.

Blue Baggers
■ 2025 second-round pick (Brisbane), 2026 and 2027 first-round picks
VERDICT -
Carlton invested its draft capital into Jagga Smith and will hope he becomes the star of their midfield rather than making a substantial play at Reid, even if he is interested in playing there.

Dogs
2025 first and second-round picks and future first-rounder
VERDICT - The Bulldogs do not look like a lead contender, but if Jamarra Ugle-Hagan was to leave the club under terms that freed up salary space in 2026, they may have a surprise crack at Reid.

Dees
Two-first round picks received for Kysaiah Pickett and a 2026 first-rounder
VERDICT -
Melbourne is unlikely to draw Reid’s attention unless the form of the last fortnight is sustained and the futures of Simon Goodwin and the Demons’ senior players are not clouded.

St Blunders
■ 2025 first-round pick and two future first-rounders
VERDICT -
If St Kilda can get both De Koning and Bergman, they will have scored a major off-season victory at a cheaper price than Reid.

Norf
■ Cam Zurhaar and two future first-round selections
VERDICT-
A move to North Melbourne does not make sense for either the Kangaroos or Reid.

The missing part to this article is the contract offering. I would say most clubs would find a way to pay him well but Saints, Tigers, Dons and Norf would be the clubs that could offer the most $$$$$.

In terms of what is the best offer for West Coast, I would say the Essendon deal (as the picks stand) and then the Tigers deal

Some of this is just lol worthy.

all first rounders are not equal. Three Cats first rounders that would probably be mid teens at best, are not worth buggers all in the comprimised draft these days. No way any team can get him unless they get multiple top 5 or 6 picks.

I reckon we already have a few diamonds in the rough,
They just need developing..
We will be a different unit in another couple of years if we can retain players.

Joke of an article. Cam Zurhaar, Darcy Cameron. Yep seems likely.

Clubs' chances of 'luring Harley' aren't ranked based on draft assets. Clubs will pitch what they can offer (success, big games, brown paper bags whatever) and it's up to him if he wants to go there and up to WC whether or not to entertain a trade.

If WC trade Harley Reid to Geelong this year that's probably the final straw for me that the club has no backbone.

The future pick 30s mentioned are hardly tasty bait.
