ANZAC Day vs Welcome to Country

So you deliberately try to disrupt it? I guess you’ll be fine with me chatting, drinking, listening to the radio or not paying attention to the minute’s silence then?
Where have I said I try to disrupt it? If I’m mid conversation im not stopping for some person prattling their history at me over a mic. ..

You can do whatever you want to….. you probably deserve what you get though for not observing a minutes silence.. the two examples aren’t even close to each other.

I'm probably a little late to the party here, but I wanted to get the views of an Aboriginal person at my work (I work for an ACCO). Some of this may be covered here already, but I'll outline it anyway.

The Welcome to Country for them serves as a means to ensure guests visiting that 'country' or region are protected and kept safe. Given that many large scale events (sports, ceremonies etc) feature visitors from people not from that specific 'country', the welcome serves as an assurance of safety.

This was traditionally something practiced between Aboriginal people, as visiting Country (not of origin) could invite punishment by the ancestors of that Country (a fairly strong spiritual belief). Even today, many Aboriginal people visiting other Country will seek our Elders or people that can provide permission to visit that country, and can report sickness when this doesn't take place.

I guess the perspective I took away from that, is that the politicisation/controversy of the issue are really Western-made.

Aboriginal people didn't 'demand' these Welcomes to happen (plus the hefty fee), it was a way of bringing Aboriginal people and non-Aboriginal people together in harmonious and positive ways.

From the perspective of the person delivering the welcome, they are in effect offering some version of a prayer/spiritual request to everyone assembled at that place that they will be protected and assured safety by being 'welcomed' to that specific country. Ironically, even the bloke hurling abuse, the intention was for him to receive that protection.

I don't really have any other views except to capture that perspective.

The WTC isn’t important to you; a minutes silence isn’t important to me. A bunch of dudes running up some sand dunes in Turkey 100 years ago has had zero affect on my life. And a lot of people in this country think the same, they are probably just shit scared at the reaction from the right they received if they don’t participate in it.

All you're calling out is a difference of opinion.
Yours [and friends] is obviously the only opinion allowed around here.
Diddums (want a lolly pop of Gobstopper to salve your whingy tanty tears?)

Get an formalised argument togther why a professed Neo Nazi booing (for any reason) at a Dawn Service commemorating Australia's war dead and combatants should be held in any regard?

How many Australians died during WWII fighting the Axis Powers?

Bring in on, there's enough people here to discuss your different points of view at length and in depth

Let's be honest, you really like black Hugo Boss designed clothes and shooting or poisoning civilians who you believe that are subhuman

When the Putsch occurs how high in the new Ultra Right Wing regime do you think you will be elevated?

Is Mein Kampf and The Protocals of The Elders of Zion take pride of place on your reading list?

Anything to back it up or just you and the reflection of you in the mirror?

Victimhood is your teddy bear, friend, cuddle it, let others that share your view come to your house and cuddle your teddy bear all they want, if you bring that teddy bear into the public square, don’t be surprised that your teddy bear leaves the public square in tatters.
Titter all you want, just don’t be surprised when it comes to tittering, that you can only titter in the safe confines of your house with your views, your teddy bear, and the friends that like to titter with your teddy bear can titter without us in the square!
Keep your titter bear to yourself and there won’t be a problem, mete!👍

Go away, you and your do gooder mates, fair dinkum, none of you must have lives.
You all talk about keyboard warriors, get out in the real world and get a true look at what's going on.
You're all full of shit.

QUESTION. Is there any other country in the world who has to stick up with 3 flags and welcome to country week in week out.
The vote was no but the bullshit continues.
I'm not anti indigenous, I'm anti bullshit

Welcome Brother. I am not a racist buttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt

I feel like this thread needs a touch of the knowledge and eloquence of South of the Yarra to explain to some like the OP what WTC is actually about, especially from an Indigenous perspective.

(If you've already done so ad nauseum elsewhere on the site and sick of doing so then please ignore my tag SOTY).

To me a Welcome / Acknowledgement to Country means more than just words. It’s a moment that stops me and reminds me where our country has come from. It’s a sign of deep respect for the Aboriginal traditions on the country where we stand. People who have cared for this land spiritually and physically for over 60,000 years. Every time I hear a Welcome to Country, I feel a sense of humility and gratitude. It reminds me that this land holds stories, pain, strength, and survival. Things we can’t always see, but that are always there.

There is a strong sense of tradition associated with it but too me, it’s not just a tradition, it’s a powerful act of recognition and healing. It makes space for truth, and it invites everyone, to listen, learn, and stand in solidarity with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. I carry that with me, and I hope to always show that same respect in how I walk on this land, and how I speak about our history and our people. There is such a sense of healing with a Welcome. All of Australia is standing with us.

Very interesting comparison between the speeches from the party leaders tonight.

The one who "Thanked the soldiers for their service" lost his seat and his party has been obliterated

The one who acknowledged the traditional owners won in a landslide.

Doesn't this show the silent Australian majority are comfortable with WTC/AOC and maybe they're a little sick of all the Anzac rubbish being shoved down our throats?

Wow, that sums it up really.

Well all of the Liberals kissing the ass of the military didn't work. Maybe the 25th of April should be quiet reflection not "thank you for your service" the first words out of Dutton's mouth when he lost tonight.

With the Labor victory however Welcome to Country and Acknowledgement of Country will be PERMANENTLY enshrined in our nation's character. Any hope the right had of ending those are over. I'm SOOOOO glad about that.

Because youre racist if you don't like them.

People ought be much more offended by performative acknowledgements of Country for political purposes then they are by culturally respectful sharings of tradition.

I had a real issue with Albanese performing it for an applause that he knew was coming tonight. Didn't feel that respectful, felt like it was intended to get a cheer to get his speech off on a high note.

Not saying he shouldn't have done an acknowledgement - obviously he should've - but he didn't need to perform it.
