Autopsy Round 9 - St Kilda v Carlton *SPUD'S GAME*

22 CBAs for 0 centre clearances for Steele. Just not gonna win with that stat line.

It just goes to show how bare the cupboard is with our clearance mids. Steele has lost that burst of grunt he used to have and last night his sole purpose was to restrict Cripps which didnt work. You could see RTB having aneurysms in the box last night with our midfield efforts, but IMO when we become solely opposition reactive we have already lost.

It started like the Brisbane game with Carlton walking the ball out, so Lyon went into complete lock down to stem the bleeding. But you have to wonder what would happen if our guys went into games completely risk averse and were told to just hunt the ball?

Interesting comments about our non functioning forwardline.

- Higgins unwell, should he have played? I have covid but promise I didn't go anywhere near other people 🤣

- Hammer back in the forwardline playing as a loose cannon space cadet.

- Wilson seems to be playing more onball/ defensive wing

- Collard sub, invisible in the last

- Hill, will he's not really a forward and doesn't feel suited to that role.

- Sharman tireless, should be taking the 3rd tall - expected to do too much up the field - which is fine but then expected to save the day and take on two defenders in the forwardline

- Owens, used a lot more than normal in the ruck it seems. Marshall's fitness is lacking and it's impacted Owens' forward craft.

- Wood, Butler, Henry, all capable but unfit as forward options.

It's horrible to say, but there were moments last night when Roma looked defeated, injured or unfit. It's affecting everyone. Roma used to be a reliable target on the wing out of defence, doesn't feel like he's doing that this year. Puts more pressure on Owens and Sharman, as for Hammer, I do believe defence is his go. TDK maybe have seemed to equal Roma stats wise but he was much more damaging in the game.

As for the mids, stop Macrae, stop St Kilda. Steele had everyone singing his praises, fair enough but he only had 20 touches. Not everyone has to be an accumulator but when you have Windy, Garcia and Boxshall and getting tackles and low disposal numbers - somethings gotta give.

Disappointed not to see Pou get a few bursts in the middle.

We have a shit load of unused salary savings that need to be spent. TDK would be getting massive front loading and would be closer to 1.4M on an ongoing basis. With the cap is increasing it's very affordable for us.
And the longer we don't land a free agent the less attractive it will be to future targets. We need to break the dam wall.

Unfortunately in football the ball isn't going to come to you perfectly every time. Good players create goals despite that. Sharman and Owens are both good young players but don't look A grade to me yet. We created enough opportunities to win but their backs really beat our forwards on the night.
I think funnily enough both those guys particularly Owens are the definition of create opportunities with poor opportunity.

He was terrible
And don’t give me the “he was creating”
Every time he touched the ball you knew Carlton were getting it back
Was with a Blues mate who asked “when’s this guys expensive contract up” fair question
His disposal under no pressure is overrated
I like Brad but he could have easily been the difference in a fifteen point game.
He turned so many attacks into desperate defence.

I normally defend him, but was just terrible last night, deserves to be dropped for trav. At least trav will tackle and can navigate a contest. Hill has got to be the worst contested player in the league, and his kicking last night was bottom of the barrel

I thought Steelo was very ordinary even though he was a bit more involved than he has been.
I reckon he’s gone at years end and knows it.

Held back by a D-grade midfield
It's been great getting games into Box and Hugo but you can't have mids getting 10 and 11 possessions. Hopefully Clark can have a good game in the VFL and then also Pou moves in there soon. I actually thought Steele was promising, his best game of the year and seems to be getting a bit of his groove back.

I know it’s painful to have lots of youth paying but we need to persist and double down with more youth why chance we get. Any senior player that plays below average should make way for the likes of Travalgia etc
All my replacements apart from Wood are youth.
I don’t think Trav has showed enough at vfl or afl level to even be considered in the firsts just yet. He’s way off.
He’s no first year Poo or Wilson.

He was head to head with the Brownlow medalist and held his own. The midfield is too lopsided and there's too much reliance on Steele and Macrae, Clark will be a good inclusion and really we probably should have played Jones last night. Hopefully Pou can go in soon. I don't get why Steele would be leaving, he's contracted to 2027 and he's the captain I'd say there's zero chance he leaves.

Well he don’t look like he’s happy or enjoying his football.

He didn’t hold his own though and was completely ineffective at getting clearances.

Hindsight - probably not since it stopped him from running out the game. I heard someone say he was vomiting at 3/4 time?

But 2 goals is still a higher output than that his replacement likely would have kicked so it wasn't a bad call either.

It speaks to the lack of depth we have in the forward line. When's Butler back? He'd also be handy right now.

The talk of the pregame stuff being a negative is utter nonsense..

They did an incredible job and I didn't hear anything complaining when we smacked around the Pies last year.

The sooner Pou gets amongst the mids the better, we couldn't get our hands on the ball all night.

If we had one of Curnow/McKay in our side it's a different result.

Frustrating, but promising all the same

Same posters would bemoan us playing on Anzac Day.
