I grew up there too, South Freo had some of the best indigenous players with Stephen Michael, Maurice Rioli and Nicky Winmar,

I supported Subiaco back in those days, we didn't have any indigenous players and we used to get absolutely smoked by them.

Nicky Winmar was magnificent. Probably my favourite non Carlton player of all time.

Aside from the strong and proud racism stance, Elvis is a fantastic human rights champion, he is proud and supportive of his gay son (I also believe Nicky had a cousin who committed suicide because he was gay)

Still really pisses me off to this day how Sam Newman denigrated Nicky by dressing up in blatantly offensive black face on The Footy Show when Nicky failed to show up.

Regardless Nicky was an amazing wizard to watch on field. I was desperately barracking for him and the Saints to win the 1997 Grand Final in the week his father passed away.

That’s not the first time Sam Newman has denigrated someone.. I remember the footy show episode where he stapled a picture of Caroline Wilson’s face to the head of a mannequin and dressed it with a boob tube and skirt.. he’s just a campaigner
