The game pretty much summed up our season - Played well in patches, failed to convert our periods of momentum. Too many players didn't contribute. Gave away too many goals that have you thinking "that was just too easy".

A very rare Weitering stinker, cost us a couple of goals by himself. Needed to be at his best today to help young HOF who was caught out a couple of times (HOF still showed plenty of great signs on debut)
Charlie is such a mercurial player and can waste a lot of chances, he should have ripped the game apart in the first half.
TDK is a good player but today showed he isn't a $12m/7yr player.
Doc's best game this year. Lord, Cerra good. Carroll, HOF positive signs.

Unforunately we need our best 22, or at least 18 of them available to compete consistently. Hopefully a few more back post-bye. A positive is at least when we are missing a few, it means games into the kids.
I mentioned last week but I think the coaches know we aren't in the hunt this year and are rebuilding on the run. Good that we got more games into the 21 and unders:
Motlop* 21yr 6mo | 51 games (*jury still out, has time)
O Hollands 21yr 4mo | 53 games
White 21yr 2mo | 8 games
Binns 20yr 6mo | 6 games
Lord 20yr 2mo | 12 games
M Carroll 19yr 5mo | 6 games
O'Farrell 19yr | 1 game

Still think we'll win our next 3.

Time to watch Hawthorn v Brisbane to see how footy should be played.

You watching Carlton ? Voss?
Voss says he's been reinforced by Ange winning. He says he's gonna dig in and stick to his gameplan until he gets results.

So. Yeah.

How are blokes meant to develop & step up when someone takes it upon themselves to carry them?

Cripps is a bona fide superstar but if we’re going to move forward and contend, we need to move past him being our superhero.

JAB is right, we need him as an on field coach more. Which he can do as mobile 3rd tall fwd with bursts in the middle. It will prolong his career as well.
You are missing the point, the players around him Walsh & Cerra etc have gone backwards that is not on Cripps, players have not stepped up.

Maybe but as an example when you watch Walsh kick the ball his technique isn’t trash.

Cerra is a beautiful kick.

Hewetts kicks are loopy/lofty but not necessarily wayward.

Lord kicks good.

Cripps although looks awkward he is generally accurate.

Acres and doc can often be wayward.?

I think there is enough kicking skills there.
I’m questioning decision making and composure.

Two things i believe can be coached or at least coached to minimise the errors.

Our team needs an elite small and another dynamic mid …really unfortunate about jagga.

Like the whole speed thing, i think our footskills have been so bad for so long that our bar is really low.

Maybe i expect too much, but all of the above except Cerra in my opinion are all below average by foot. And Cerra again in my opinion is what i expect from an AFL footballer. His disposal wouldnt stand out in a lot of teams.

I hate Hewitts loopy kicks, it takes so much speed off the movement.

Well I told Jake not to bother calling me.
Just turn my auto off.
I could afford some ridiculous package if we ever make a Granny final.
Call me when you get C. Scott or Horse.
So....that should work.🤣😛🥂

He is or was? Please tell me who is better? Which mid do we have that is better than him? Who asserts themselves on a game like he does? Man played through injuries, poor team performances and multiple coach changes yet ranked best in the league. I see some crazy stuff get thrown around this forum but pot shorting crippa is wild.

It’s not pot shotting.

He is Carlton ****ing royalty and one of our best ever players and leaders.

But if we’re going to seriously contend, responsibility needs to go on the other midfielders. Because of the way Cripps plays & leads, he takes the responsibility on - because that’s the type of bloke he is.

But it’s detrimental to the team - key word - team.

I’m not saying the other players sit back and go ‘oh Crippas got this, I don’t have to do anything’. But subconsciously, they don’t feel the responsibility they should - I guarantee it.

Think it’s pretty simple & pretty obvious.
All the pieces we have don’t fit together to form a cohesive team.
On paper it looks like a team, on the field it’s 22 blokes who play like they have just met.

It starts in the middle and it permeates from there.
They straight up can’t play 4 quarters.
How we can fall down so often in the same way is ludicrous.

JSOS stands out to me as our obvious choice for Capt.

I agree - hence the like - but realistically too injury-prone as much as that pains me to say it.

You are missing the point, the players around him Walsh & Cerra etc have gone backwards that is not on Cripps, players have not stepped up.

Agreed, they’re certainly partially to blame. In a perfect world they take the responsibility themselves, but sometimes people need to be forced into it - even elite athletes.

It’s not ideal but it’s where we’re at.

So what do you do? Trade them all? Or take a swing and give them the responsibility their pay check warrants?

He sure is…

Ok, but then is that crippa fault and responsibility? Or is that the other players and coaches jobs?

Does Cripps have to change the way he plays for others weaknesses?

For me that sits with the coaching staff, they have been doing a bang up job.

I wouldn't want to play for Cripps - he is a big problem at Carlton - not the biggest though....the blokes on a Million at Carlton aren't leaders - they aren't on field coaches and never will be apart from Weitering.

Weitering is part of the problem. Picks and chooses depending on who is playing down back.
Our issues with leaders are endemic.

Hell of a lot more effort put into gouging membership money than building a successful football department and team for supporters to be proud of …

I said it’s not Cripps’ fault - he doesn’t know any other way to play.

Yep, other players are definitely partly to blame - see above post.

And yep, he’s been coached poorly imo.

And again, yep unfortunately he does need to change the way he plays. He might be desperate to play 30mins in the midfield every quarter, but the benefit of the team he needs to as a 3rd tall with bursts in the middle, for the benefit of the TEAM, and I imagine he would do just that - because that’s the type of bloke he is. But - as I said, he’s been coached poorly.

All great leaders do this - pendles transitioned to an on-field coach and flanker role years ago for example.

My view is that the biggest problem Carlton have with the list is low footy IQ. Good players knwo how to play within their limitations and how to get the most out of each other and play for each other. I watch Carlton and it becomes obvious that there is far far too much one out going on.

How much of this is a coaching criticism / fault and how much is players I dont know - but there is an overlap.
If it is actually low IQ players it 100% a coaching issue.
They didn’t just get dumb, that’s who they are.
They may not have the footy IQ but they have the skills - if they didn’t have the base skill they wouldn’t have been drafted & made a list.

You don’t have to be a high IQ player to do a job, but it requires drilling the hell out of a system so it’s 2nd nature & the system has provide for the players being low IQ.

Not being factious here, u give me 22 idiots who can kick, mark, handball & run thru a wall I can devise a simple system to make that work & a plan B & C when it doesn’t.

We do not have that, its a product of coaching & system

As supporters we are just as piss weak as the players if we start cancelling memberships.

I'm keeping the 4 family memberships I have and will be first to sign next year.

Yet Another could’ve been game!

Very rare stinker by Weiters.
And Yes crippa burnt a couple of players and ops but they’ve both got more than enough credits in the bank to be more than excused.

Congrats HOF on a great debut.

Season almost cooked sadly. So much effort for little return.
More inside 50s, more kicks, more handballs yet we can’t seem to convert that into wins.

Of all the things that is really bad this season, Walsh becoming a C grade footballer is the worst of the lot.
This also concern's me and Walsh should be ripping games apart not doing the easy stat padding crap.

I am just lost as to where we are as a group and the list is fine but we are just woeful if you take out that honeymoon period of a few months in 2023 when we got real lucky.
